We were the only patrons, but I enjoyed the serenity and the sound of heavy rainfall. Our group paid our respects, doing a silent offering, 2 bows, 4 claps, prayer, and a final bow. This is different from the typical nirei-nihakushu-ichirei "2 bows-2 claps-1 bow", therefore take care to note each shrines prayer customs! The shrine attendant was very helpful in explaining the different protection charms for sale and also explained the yakudoshi "years of calamity" concept to us. If you like to visit a Shinto shrine in Hawaii, Daijingu Temple of Hawaii was a beautiful place. Highly recommend!

Their setup is located on the keamoku side of the building, but you can enter either way and find parking. It is probably easiest through keamoku compared to Sheridan street. They are selling kc waffle dogs for $5 and hamburgers for $7. Cash or card accepted! They plan on doing some kind of night market at the temple too, so look out for them. Ps they are the original family that started kc drive inn that's out there at the temple :)

The highlight for us is always the food and this year's offerings included a wide array bento & plate offerings as well as sweet selections. We settled in on the traditional andagi which was nice and crispy on the outside and not really greasy. Just the right amount of moistness. Just $3 for a bag of 3. The other food highlight was a Mochi/hot dog on a bamboo skewer, grilled and splashed with a sweet ketchup sauce. Was ono, and it's just $2 a stick. Come by to dance the night away and grind on some delicious foods. An enjoyable night during the summer.

It's a good think my grandmother is there to help translate things for me. Other than the language barrier, there were other things that struck me as different (in our current society). One thing that stuck out is the men and women sit separated, men on the right and women on the left. Also, men go first with everything from putting incense to eating. Extremely traditional Japanese culture at work here. But the main reason why my family comes to this particular church is because of the Sensei, she...yes it is a female...she is very wise beyond her young age. She has a lot of good and positive messages (in Japanese only) that she gives us after each service. I guess you can say that I have started to embrace my Japanese culture. And I look forward to learning more about the beliefs and traditions that built the country where my ancestors were from...

The other day, I had the wonderful fortune of visiting Myohoji with two friends. We were able to…read moremeet the resident minister: Reverend Takamasa Yamamura. He was in credibly friendly. We were allowed to visit the hondo (the temple) and the multi-purpose complex. We had a wonderful time talking with Rev. Yamamura about a number of topics. And then he was kind enough to invite us to a tea ceremony (urasenke). The history of Myohoji is quite fascinating. And we were so glad to have had the opportunity to learn more about the temple, it's resident minister, and the various activities that take place. We are looking forward to visiting again in the near future. :)

New year...new location…read more.. Ever since I can remember we've come to the temple to start our new year with humble and the calm of visiting the temple along with the fireworks that's been the tradition here in Hawai'i though this year I did have different plans as I took the kindness of Yelp friends of Suri S and Steve S to view the fireworks along with dinner and a lovely evening planned. With that going the morning after since I had the day off I decided not to slack off and still visit the temple for blessing only to see that there wasn't the priest as many flocked over and gave their donations and dropped off the old omamori ring the bell and made their prayers on their own was something that I didn't expect. Parking is the biggest issues here is the reason that I don't usually come here as there is a drop off area and you park at Farrington but since we did have a disable parking I was able to bring mom and do a quick glance around which was really nice. There were two area to do your prayers while the nearby building held the other various options to have a sip of sake, various omamori with description for each amulet and what it represents is a great detail for those that needs further representation was quite impressive. Mom enjoyed herself and was delighted of this location as it has restrooms as well as we start 2025 with a positive vibe and at peace for the visit. Thank you!

Although we have only visited this temple on 2 separate occasions, we have found solace, relief and consolation during times of distress and sorrow. My aunt on my mother's side used to see Reverend Tin Fook at the Mong Won Tan Temple. Tin Fook's English name is Cullen. He is a local boy who can speak Hawaiian, Cantonese, and English! I felt like my cousin on my father's side would be able to feel some connection and get some assistance and peace of mind, too... I brought her to Rev. Tin Fook and it was a successful meeting! There's free street parking in the front. The Temple appears to be a house in a quiet, residential neighborhood, surrounded by orchids, lehua tree, and blossoming puakenikeni! As you drive up Gardenia Street, the Temple is easy to spot because of the red doors. Hours of operation are 7am to 10am every day except Saturdays and Mondays when it's closed. We were afraid that there would be a long line of parishioners, waiting their turn with Tin Fook. We actually were the first to be seen! However, after a few minutes, The Reverend wanted a longer session with us, so he called in the next client, heard their concerns, and called us back in. After a while, another person came for advice, so we took a break, returned to "talk story", and finished out the Reverend's day (10am). Yes...he is very patient and empathetic. He uses common sense and gives practical guidance. I sure can see why he is so popular! If you're interested, just stop by and give it a try! Donations of fruit, flowers, monetary gifts, incense, etc. are welcomed! Note: the next jai (vegetarian Monk's food) fundraiser is on 7-21-19. Put your order in because it's just a small homemade batch made with lots of Aloha! It's just $10 a jar!

Retreat in Honolulu, Hawaii…read more.. I heard about this weekend retreat from my Wednesday night Bible class. I looked up "BCC" (Basic Christian Community) online, found it, signed up, and paid through Eventbright. Easy! BCC emailed instructions and reminders! I was curious! I didn't know anything and hadn't really spoken to anyone about the BCC retreats. There was a list of what to bring (umbrella, flashlight, towel, pillow, toiletries, etc.). Val, from my Wednesday night group, suggested that I bring a sleeping bag. I found the St. Anthony's Retreat Center with GPS. I drove slowly and saw the entrance on the right side of Kalihi Street. I stopped at the sign where participants could drop off their car key, have the valet park their car, and someone would help with bringing luggage to the assigned room. The buildings were old-school cool. This place used to be an orphanage in 1909. It was run by the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary until Hawaii became the 50th State and Foster Care looked after orphans. In 1974, Sister Gertrude changed St. Anthony Home into St. Anthony Retreat Center. It was renovated and expanded in 1999 to 2008. Our group used the dorms (which had running water, beds, and showers with hot water), dining room and chapel downstairs, and the meeting hall in the building next door, which had 4 restrooms. The grounds were very beautiful with white statues of an angel, Jesus, and St. Christopher. I found the grotto with Mary, but I didn't find the outdoor Stations of the Cross. I'll have to go exploring in the future!

The facilities are divided into the Historic Halls (original Kalihi Orphanage), Historic Circle Heritage Centers. Each hall has its own parking lot and is separate form each other which affords private and quiet to groups who may be having concurrent events. These facilities are located deep in Kalihi Valley with surrounding plant life that looks like you're in an Old Hawai'i tropical forest and you can even hear or see the Kalihi Stream running through the property. We've had the pleasure of attending birthday celebrations for my husband's aunt and family reunion dinners at this lush and secluded Catholic ministry retreat. Over the past 6 years, we've been here 3 times and only ONCE have we experienced clear blue skies. Perhaps we're receiving a Blessing from the Heavens but, our experiences here have been nothing less than stellar. Anyway, we've been fortunate that our family has gotten reservations at the Mother Alexandrine Hall which has a capacity for 77 people and a kitchenette. This dining hall is air-conditioned, well-kept and ensures private and quietness to retreat groups or celebrations. Parking for attendees or deliveries is convenient to each hall. We hope that we'll be able to return for more family reunions and to celebrate a few more birthdays for my husband's aunt.
