I'm a cat lover. I'm also a nene lover. A friend of mine, along with his dog, and I, found ourselves in a pinch when the dog found a box on Ala Ohio Bypass in Waimea with two abandoned kittens. They were just 10 days old and were given what looked to be dry dog food. By the time we found them, ants had gotten into the food. We are both scrambling, calling for animal rescue. I call Animal Control and Police dispatch. Animal Control says call dispatch. Dispatch says call Animal Control. The left and right hand does not know what the other is doing. I go online looking for Hawaii Humane Society. There's a list of numbers. But they don't list which location. So I just take a photo of the kitties and send it to the first number I see. Unfortunately, they are in Pahoa. They do give me the Cat Cares number in Hawi. So I call Cat Kares and I explain the situation. I have these two cats in a box in Waimea. I cannot take them in because we have another cat. The woman, Debbie, was very argumentative. "I have 60 other cats!" she yells. "I can't pick them up today! I'm asking you to take them in for one day. If you leave them, they will die!" By this time I'm tired of getting the runaround from all the so-called cat rescuers that I've called. But here's the clincher from Debbie. "You can feed them goat's milk!" I'm thinking, you expect me to stop on the road and milk a goat? Where the hell am I to get goat's milk? I have rescued kittens before. But that was nearly 40 years ago! Whatevers, woman! The only helpful thing Debbie did was to text me the number of CatSnip Hawaii. I sent CatSnip a pic of the kittens and hung up on Debbie. She was not very friendly. My friend and his dog decided they would take the cats to safety and find friends at HPA to look after them. CatSnip did come pick them up in the afternoon and put them in foster care. I did mention I'm a nene lover and volunteer conservationist. I will not be supporting or endorsing any animal rescue that does not support native wildlife conservation efforts, including Cat Kares. Don't call this place if you are in a situation where you need to rehome a cat. I spoke to Debbie whom I've dealt with before amd had a bad experience. My father has had a major stroke and can't have cats it the house. Her loud response: -Take them with you and sell to the highest bidder. -Work it out. -If you abandon them, they will die (which I would never do!) I told her that I would rather euthanize them than abandon them (which tears my heart out). She then proceeded to yell at me telling me I was evil for considering putting two healthy cats down. KARES ... Debbie Cravatta. The issue is negative energy and intolerable behavior for starters. I've known her as a rescue org for a few years now. Virtually every conversation over the years (I call her as a LAST resort) has been SO IMMENSELY STRESSFUL AND ANXIETY FILLED, I feel my heart race when I have to dial her number. Will she SCREAM, YELL, COME UNHINGED OR SAY SOMETHING utterly ABUSIVE, ABOUT A DOG OR CAT I've rescued, and is in need? I've had puppies die in my arms, while working to rescue them, in these two instances, she used a normal tone voice and said she was sorry about their deaths. That speck of compassion is a speck though. That is not who she is. Her rescue attitude is VERY BAD!! Debbie has ruined the KARES reputation largely, and she cannot get rid of it now, and doesn't seem to give a damn about how much she disregards people who are rescuing, and are saving these animals...she'll BERATE YOU as she thrives right there in that space OR ELSE SHE THREATENS NOT TO HELP YOU AT ALL, LIKE EVER! That's what she did to me recently, after she agreed 3 weeks ago to help after I begged for help, with 3 rescue puppies very ill from an awful environment.She offered to use funds to pay a Hilo vet office for tests and parasite-potential treatment. While I waited there, she called me and told me to call everyone I know and ask them for money to chip to bring her bill down. She screamed at me "I must hit up people for money", she didn't want to use her grant dollars to foot the bill entirely. These weren't my puppies, but I chipped in a percentage myself just to shut her up. I was shocked at her shameless demand to ask for money and she's sitting there with grants to USE for the community of us who do this work for nothing more than to SAVE animals!! KARES gets hundreds of thousands if not a million dollars in GRANTS promising to rescue/spay/neuter to SAVE AND TO FIX DOGS AND CATS! Debbie's attitude towards good souls trying to do the trenchwork out here is so despicable and demeaning that it gets in the way of THE ACTUAL WORK her grant money is supposed to be used for!! Debbie is a loose cannon 99.9% of the time, doesn't matter what your emergency is. Fast forward after the puppy rescue and treatment. One of these puppies had what appeared to be hematoma on each of his little ears. I texted and called Debbie and the Vet who treated them, for help. She told me to dig in with a Q-tip and 'it would be gunky' and then put a rinse in, and not once did she offer to have the puppy seen by the same Vet. I swabbed, his little ears were very clean. She was wrong about that. The Vet called, she knew I couldn't get there so we discussed a simple sterile draining procedure. It worked and I drained his little ear with no issue at all. I was so glad. I then texted Debbie what the Vet and I discussed and that it had drained safely, it worked! Debbie called me upon getting my text screaming at the top of her lungs: "what part of what I said didn't you get?!!", totally disregarding that a Vet was in the picture. My mistake was NOT listening to her? Over a VET? Debbie is NOT A VET!! Let's be clear, she thinks she is but she IS NOT! Debbie lost CONTROL and screamed at me to "LOSE MY NUMBER", as I begged her to calm down, she yelled "I'M BLOCKING YOU!!", and HUNG UP ON ME whilst I sat shaking. I texted her to please understand I was given Vet help and WHY would that be bad??? She wasn't done berating me. Debbie then contacted the clinic who fixes animals, the one single entity that tolerates her, and the clinic TEXTED ME that Debbie said "she wasn't covering anymore animals you bring in for spay or neuter!!!". I've been there numerous times, they know me and my heart! I replied back with the truth in a text to the clinic Vet and she had little to say, ironically. But I told the truth and now, I let it be known. There are countless instances of her terrorizing people who are rescuers...and NOT protecting dogs and cats! Again, Debbie is refusing to FIX ANIMALS I BRING IN, IN ORDER NOT TO ADD TO MORE UNWANTED DOGS. I HAVE over 12 cats and dogs WAITING AND DEBBIE KNOWS THIS!!!! Her cruelty knows no end. It's time to do something about her antics and unethical behavior and abuse. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE. The reviews (3) that I have read here of KARES are but a drop in the bucket.
