What a special spot for kids and families! While visiting family nearby, they suggested that we all take our kids to the Kohl Children's Museum for them to play and run around. (It was also a particularly good move because we would be leaving shortly thereafter on our five-hour roadtrip back home -- so great for getting out the wiggles!) This museum is one large floor filled with spaces for kids to play with. There's a play grocery, play restaurant, play doctors office, play mechanic, play water tables, play music area -- even a play bookshop. Everything the kids could touch and learn from. We easily spent a couple of hours exploring everything alongside our kiddos. The trick was keeping an eye on our kids since they were constantly running from one thing to the next. We also visited during a weekend of a freezing cold snap, which meant it was packed with families hoping to wear their kids out indoors. Even still, we were able to play with everything without a long wait. I loved seeing how thought out each area was and all the ways that the kids could interact with everything. If I lived in this area, I would definitely have a membership and visit often!

We visited here one time and were hooked! So much we bought an annual pass. I cannot recommend it enough. Our 3 year old enjoys coming here at least one a week during the non summer months. For us, now is the time to come here before he starts Pre K4. Spring, Fall and Winter afternoons (with the exception of holidays) seem to be the best time since the crowds are minimal. If you like crowds, come in the AM hours during the summer! Typically we'll swing by after lunch and his nap. He may have a snack or two (which you can bring in) and away he's playing! The staff here are so friendly, welcoming and inclusive to everyone! Things to check out are any workshops, the art studio, the train and def the grocery store. You can easily spend a good 3-4 hours here and if you do, enjoy every moment of it!

Absolutely love this museum! Theres so much to do and it's super easy to stay engaged with the kiddos throughout or just let them do their own thing and watch from the sidelines. I appreciate that every section has seating for the adults and they're in great areas that make it easy to keep eyes on what your little is doing. The Whole Foods grocery store was the fan favorite for us and the water area was probably a close second. One of the areas does change out occasionally, but we'd come back even if it wasn't changed. The price of $20 per person is pretty reasonable for a fun day. There is a small cafe in there but it wasn't one when we visited on a Sunday so I don't have any other input for that.

We spent the morning here today and this is a very fun, interactive place for kids. Being a weekend, the crowd was to be expected but everyone was respectful and understanding. For first timers, there was so much to see and do. We spent a total of 2 hours here. It felt like nonstop stimulation and plenty of time for kids to expend some energy. They have the Thomas the train exhibit right now, which was part of what drew us to visit during this time. There are so many other areas to explore and each one was a huge hit. Afterwards we ate at their cafe near the entrance, which offers some great food options for adults and kids, and the prices are quite reasonable. There's plenty of free parking outside the museum. Tickets were $18 per person over age 1, which I reserved on their website.

My tweens have definitely aged out of this place, but it was perfect for my 2 and 6 year old nieces. This was the first time I've been here since 2021 and it looks like they have done a great job in maintaining and updating the exhibits. The special summer Van Gogh exhibit is also very instagram friendly for both kids and parents, as you can snap a bunch of great pictures pretending you are in the painting. We went after 3pm to avoid crowds as it is usually quieter closer to closing. Parking was easy. The front desk staff was super helpful and checked us in quickly. Highly recommend for younger kids, too cool tweens would be bored.

We returned here with the grand-darlings for another Military Appreciation Day outing. On this visit, we really particularly enjoyed their new Van Gogh traveling exhibit which has been here for about a month now. It was a lot of fun for both adults and kids to enjoy his renowned paintings and for the kiddos to do some hands-on interactive stuff imitating these paintings. I must say this is probably the best exhibit I've encountered here to date.

We visited here on our 2nd and 3rd days in Chicago. Our son loved this place that we came back both in morning and afternoon for both days. There was cafe that we ordered lunch with member discount. Food on health side which was nice. Also we had reciprocal membership to save on admission. There were tinker lab for magnets project which was fun. Also there was 3d pens for stem science workshop which we signed up. Outdoor was a track and butterfly house. My son loved riding tricycle around the path. We visited the butterfly house the next day since it only had morning hours. Overall, this place is better staffed with constant cleaning and sorting throughout the day. The exhibits looked tidy and wasn't as messy as dupage children's museum.

Such a great museum for the kids. They have a play area for all types of kids from babies up to 18 months all the way up to 8 years old. They have a play class room, a miniature Whole Foods grocery store, an area where you can take care of babies and a separate veterinarian area for pets. There was several science based sections where they teach the kids about electricity, transportation, and a water function area. Lastly, they have an outdoor area that has a garden and several other things. The best thing to do if your kid is planning on going several times is to get the membership pass. You can get to to 4 or 6 admissions a time included per visit for 1 year. The cheapest is $165 and the max is $190. Not bad as a single visit ticket for an adult or kid older than 1 year old is $19.

Dated. Pretty much sums up this childrens museum now. It has space and lots of different play areas for children. Even some of the older ones would still enjoy playing. But for the most part a lot of these exhibits have been here for years without much updating. So the different parts and components of the various play areas are either worn or getting there. And the technology or type of variety of activities are dated and more from the 90s or early 2000s. The space is well maintained though and the staff is great at keeping things organized and cleaned up. But if I had to pay for a children's museum I'd probably rather visit a different one.

Ask the Community - Kohl Children's Museum

Will the museum (and the Thomas exhibit) be open on Columbus Day?

Qs about admission fee. So if I were to bring my kid, the total amount I need to pay at the entrance would be $24 right?

It's going to cost $24 and certain areas will have you waiting in line for an hour after certain kids are done playing.

Is this a place you can take a 13 month old? Is it worth it when they're that young?

Yes, you can most certainly take your 13 month old. They have at least 2 areas that are sectioned off specifically for infants/toddlers. They must remove their shoes and the adult wears shoe covers or takes shoes off too.… Read more

I am going through my second childhood these days, but it is far better than the first because I have a deeper curiosity, and a longer attention span to couple with a sense of wonder. Therefore, finding myself in a small museum, filled with old firehouse equipment and memorabilia made me happier than a pig in merde. We also found out that Babyface Nelson was killed and his body dumped in St. Paul's Cemetery not too far away. As a big fan of Chicago's old gangster history I can't believe I never knew this, but that is what cute little museums are for. All you have to do is ask and they will give you a tour of the log cabin. It is the oldest structure in Skokie, dating back to 1847. The inside is decorated in period furnishings, complete with a cast iron stove. The land around it is planted with Illinois prairie plants to create a true feeling of the region. What a delightful little treasure to find in downtown Skokie. They offer an interesting and inexpensive birthday party for kids that includes tours, ice cream making and candle dipping, plus table decorations, plates and napkins for $150 for 12 kids. To me that sounds like a good deal. Anyhow, this place is well worth checking out, especially because it is free!!! They do have a donation jar, so be cool and slip them a few bucks!!! Museum hours are 12 to 4 PM on Thursday and Friday and 10 AM to 2 PM on Saturday and Sunday (seasonal hours, call to confirm). They also provide various special events throughout the year, call for information. (847) 674-1500 ext. 3000

The other ongoing main exhibits were one on local aviation history, and one displaying paintings by local artists.  They change the main exhibits about once a year.  They have 4 staffers and are funded by both the city as well as Des Plaines benefactors.  Admission is free but donations are welcome.  Recommended if you're a local history or artifacts buff!
