Kids will definitely have fun here the first time! But as an adult there just leaves something to be desired. Having visited about 15 years ago, everything looks kind of exactly the same. Many of the exhibits were worn and have seen better days. There's a wide variety of hands on things which is nice and this is great for a local facility but I wish things were a bit more fresh and new. Yes, it's as you'd expect if you come here on a weekend: it can be way overcrowded and hectic and a little anxiety inducing if your energetic kids are on the younger side (just thinking accidental bumps or collisions). But I can see why it's so popular! There are what seem like endless exhibits. A crowd pleaser is definitely the grocery mart area, with kid proportioned shopping carts and baskets. I'm still cracking up that grandpa had to question whether the fruits and veggies were real. The water station in the back is also fun and different, though very splashy, so definitely get an apron on your kid, or consider bringing in an extra T-shirt to change! Other areas include a train station, musical instruments, arts and crafts, STEM related hands on displays, and dress up/costume play. Kohl's seems to be very involved in community events and engagement. We really appreciate the quarterly complimentary Sunday morning for military families. It's nice and private and dare I say peaceful! Lol. On a typical basis, a military ID allows you a BOGO entry ($12 per person for 1 and up until you're senior age). Plenty of birthday party rooms here too, which would be a fun idea. Lockers are available at the front for a quarter, but you can only lock one time. A Cosi is also adjacent to the front entrance for fuel. We love this neighborhood gem! read more

Kohl's Children's Museum is a great children's museum in the Chicagoland area. It's a great place for young children (toddlers) and it is very educational for pre-k early primary grade students. As an educator, I appreciate the options for higher-order thinking presented in each exhibit as well as the hands-on activities that lend themselves to multiple learning styles. I also appreciate the coatroom, the cafe, and the free parking! As a city dweller having free parking makes it worth the trek to the burbs. read more

Our family of 4 went to the museum today for the first time with our kids being 20mo. old and 6 weeks old. We definitely had a fun time and our toddler enjoyed every second of it! But there's some major changes that need to be made to this museum, starting with the safety precautions: when you arrive parents get a wristband but nothing for children, even when you go to Chuck E Cheese they give you & your child a matching stamped number that you need to get checked before leaving to make sure no one leaves with your child. I recommend something like that for this place. Also, this place really needs to be brought up to date as me and my husband both noticed hardly any changes since our childhood, so basically minimal changes in over twenty years! That also makes me question how sanitary everything is since it's been around so long. We were hoping to see more hand sanitizer stations, there were maybe 3-4 that we saw throughout the entire museum, but we think that outside of each exhibit there should be multiple hand sanitizer stations. We saw the men's and women's restrooms, but couldn't find a family restroom. And finally, I nurse my 6 week old and was happy when I found out they had a nursing station there but once I saw the "nursing station" I was a little disappointed. It was basically an open little nook area in between exhibits, but had no door and the bench you sit on faced the hall where everyone walks by, not to mention there's a giant mirror directly across from there as well! I would just recommend a bigger more private nursing room, with comfier couches or rocking chairs, and with a door that way nursing parents who have multiple children with them can keep their other children with them while they nurse their little ones. It was definitely a fun time, but we just expected so much more considering the price per person ages 1+ are now $17 if purchased online and $19 if purchased upon arrival! Kids love this place. Their permanent exhibits are the mini Whole Foods, potbelly sandwich shop, pet vet, nursery, and water work. Other sections change once in a while. It's absolutely adorable everything is miniature and kids play pretend while learning how the adult world work, sort of. However, it does require membership or an entry fee. Great place for a family outing with the kids. They have different areas for kids to explore their interests.

The Kohls Museum is guaranteed fun for kids and a guaranteed headache for parents. However, the sounds of glee that escapes from my daughter whenever we walk into Kohls makes the headache bearable. I think my daughter could come here everyday and it wold be impossible for her to get bored. She spends hours running from room to room (making sandwiches at the pretend potbellys, grocery shopping at the pretend dominics, water play area, etc). While the main exhibits such as those mentioned above don't change they do a good job of changing many things up for the kids. I recently visited twice in one week and was impressed with the differences within just a few days. The membership is well worth it and will pay for itself after just a few visits. We've been living in the North Shore for 5+ months now and have been there at least 20 times. If you visit on a weekend you're likely to see about 5 bday parties going on at the same time. While we haven't been lucky enough to attend a Kohls bday party of our own not sure it would be my first choice to host a bash since the kids are basically let loose among all museum visitors in the museum until it's cake time. It would be impossible to get my daughter out of Kohls since she has so much fun there, but fortunately we're always able to lure her to lunch at Cosi (located within Kohls). They have a ton of kids menus to choose from w/ all the faves (mac & cheese, grilled cheese, chicken fingers) not to mention it all comes with a chocolate chip cookie. Take the kids. You won't be sorry...just be sure to pack an advil for YOU. read more

Highly unimpressed with this place. Everything is dated, worn, and disorganized. It was also weirdly sparse; the emptiness seemed like they haven't added any new items since they opened in 1985. I never once saw any employee sanitize anything. The wear-and-tear of the place is especially appalling when you consider the cost of entry, which is exactly the same price as DuPage Children's Museum, which is far superior and much cleaner. Kohl Children's Museum is a wonderful place for kids to explore and learn through all sorts of fun exhibits. This is a great place to go on rainy or winter day to help them burn off some energy. It is located just outside the Glen and has a huge parking lot. Every time we have gone I get the feeling of controlled chaos. It is usually packed with kids and parents trying their best to keep an eye on them. There are many different sections for children to explore. There is an automobile area, a mini Whole Foods, and a kid sized Potbelly restaurant. The water play area is a lot of fun and they provide aprons to help keep everyone dry. They rotate in a special section and we have seen a Panda exhibit that went over well. There are some nature areas with a focus on animals and the environment. I got a kick out of my kids pretending to do the weather forecast in front of the green screen. If you are looking for a good indoor activity try Kohl's out. There is usually a Groupon so you can cut the cost of the trip down significantly. read more

Cute little museum for the little ones. I feel this museum is made for smaller kids under 8 or so. Most popular area is the Whole Foods Market shopping center where kids can shop and check out. The other popular area was the kitchen / sandwich store where kids can make sandwiches and work the cash register. Cute train area, music area, and a house you can pretend paint, put wallpaper and tiles on the floor. Everyone was pretty helpful and when my son was crying when he fell an employee came over to make sure he was ok - thanks for that! Great place to get the kids energy out. Certainly not the simple cute museum I used to take the kids to. There is so much activity and rooms to explore if you could only get near them. It's a high price if your just there to watch a grandchild play Fir an hour or two. Too hectic for under two. So many parents don't stop their kids from taking things away from smaller ones or hogging all the groceries in the pretend market. In the music room one child kept banging the cymbal so hard n loud children put their hands over their ears n left quickly , his father was with him saying crap like Lucas do you want to try something else? At some point be a parent and stop their "creativity " as it's driving everyone away. It was so packed we did not stay very long. read more

Best place to take your energetic kiddos if the outside weather is too hot or too cold. They have an exhibition for every type of passion a kid could have. Grocery store, science, face paint, doctor play, water play, music, building, reading, and probably much more (i just didn't have time for everything). They also have little areas for babies AAAND nursing stations. Its not in just one place. They have multiple nursing and baby play areas. So if you come with a toddler or older kid and a baby, you can play/feed your baby while being in close proximity of your more independent/older child. I would know because I visited with my 3yr old and 7week old. Worth the visit!!! read more

I took my 13 month old over the weekend and she enjoyed exploring everything. It's more so geared to older kids, but we had fun none the less. I loved how each area has a theme. They had the car area with a car wash, Whole Foods, ravinina, gears, building, fishing, nature area. It was a well thought out floor plan that maximized the space. I liked how it was all one floor rather than several floors like other museums. It's so much more convenient when you use a stroller. We got there right when they opened at 12 and we're there for a solid 2 hours. My daughter liked the infant areas available too since she was the only in there and got to crawl/walk/fall with no one else in her way. They have an arts and craft room too. We went and drew a couple of things too. There is a water area, but it was closed for repairs. The outside area is nice too. There is a vegetable garden, flower garden, play area, and a read along book on the pathway. If you're in the mood for an interactive place for your children and to kill a few hours this is the place. Be warned it is $13/person over the age of 1 so it can be a bit pricey, but they are part of Museums for All so if you have link/WIC you can enter at a reduced rate of $3/person. read more

The museum's website recommends for 4- to 8-year-olds. I took my 5- and 8-year-old and the place was overrun with toddlers. I don't fault caregivers for wanting to take their littles to the museum, but it was a joke watching elementary school students trying to interact in any meaningful way with exhibits alongside droves of 2- and 3-year-olds. Not sure what the solution is, but for what you pay (a lot) and what you get (many half-working or broken exhibits and so many people you can barely move), you expect a better experience. A great space for kids to romp around especially during the colder Chicago winters. The craft area is well stocked with odds and ends for creativity. If you live in the area, this is one of the places that you have to get a membership. We went several times a week, it's worth the price of membership having a relatively clutter free home! Its a good location for childhood creativity - and also a little splashing in the water area. Hunger could be curbed by the Cosi which is in-building. Party rooms galore - offer at least 4 parties to be going on at one time. Weekends are especially busy - so if you have the option - go on a weekday (especially around lunch hour). I grew up around the area and so when I had my son, I always wanted to take him. I am no longer local, but when we visit we try to go. We went on a Thursday and it was nice and not crowded. We played with everything, even some more than once and for the first time we went outside to the garden and play area. The garden is not planned yet (it's early May after all), but it was a great extra experience. I will say there are some things that need repairing or replacing because of use like the doll hospital, the water area, and the music room, but overall my 4 year old had a great time. This museum is the place to be for your kiddos! I have been bringing my kids here since they were a few months old. There is something for all ages to see and do here. The Whole Foods pretend store is the cutest! There is a vet clinic, a library, baby nursery, car shop and a construction site! I suggest you clear your whole day because there is a lot to do here. I took the 5 year old girl that I babysit here and she had a BLAST!!! There is so much for kids to do/ play with there. It is a bit chaotic since there are tons of kids and some are pretty cruel and bully others. But, overall its great fun! The price is reasonable... the only comment that I have about the price is that it's $9.50 for both adults and children. Which I think is a bit expensive... in this case the Adults should pay a lower admission price in my eyes. I took the Metra train here (The Glen of North Glenview stop on the North Line) and it was a bit of a hike for a 5 year old. But, it's conveniently located right next to the Glen shopping area. There are tons of food venues and shopping boutiques in the area. I definitely think that one can spend a good portion of the day in this area. I recommend that if you take the train there that you pick a day that is not too hot. There wasn't very much shade to be found on the walk from the train station to the museum. read more

Hubby and I used to take our kids here when it was a tenth of the size in a building in Wilmette. Now I am taking my granddaughter here some 25 years later! We went on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I was expecting so much chaos and confusion. It was packed. There were several birthday parties. HOWEVER, this did not seem to cause any type of issue! Unbelieveable! We had a two year old and a one month old and 4 adults. We spent over 3 hours there. The two year old went from room to room exploring everything. The set up is fantastic. You can keep a eye on your toddler easily. I also must say that everyone (kids and adults) are well behaved. Everyone understands the unwritten code to help each other. The price is pretty steep ($8.50 for adults over 55 and $9.50 for everyone from 1 year old to 55) but for an afternoon of fun for all, it seemed worth it. The memberships are a good deal if you plan to go a few times during the year. The target age for this would be 18 months to 8 years. We brought our two year old when she was one year. She had a great time even then... but this time she was in her element! Starting with the "car room", then moving on to books, engineering, water, music, grocery store, and science... she had a great time learning and exploring! Oh... and the 1 month old? There are little nooks where our DIL could breastfeed in quiet, family restrooms galore to change dirty diapers, and plenty of seats for a tired grandma and grandpa to rest a bit. read more

It doesn't get any better than this. Yeah, it can get crowded. Rainy days and during winter vacation are the worst times to go. Expect lots of kids with runny noses (ew). But most of the time it is manageable and there is just SO MUCH to do there. Our new favorite this summer was the outdoor area. They have a cute "treasure hunt" map that you can grab and find the statues around the path. There is also a newish spider web climbing structure and these spinning cups... it's all fun and games til someone gets too dizzy and barfs everywhere. The big hits indoors are the face painting mirror, water room, Potbelly's sandwich shop and the vet. The best thing is that there is something for every age group so all the kids can have fun. It's easy to spend a whole day here without even noticing. They think they're sneaky putting a gift shop RIGHT at the front door so that when you enter and leave all you hear is "CAN WE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE JUST GO BUY SOMETHING?!?! CAN WE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE JUST GO LOOK???". Ummm... I forgot my purse in the car... however, if you are feeling the need to shop, they have great educational gifts in there. There aren't many play places in the suburbs where I live, so we always have to travel at least 45 minutes to an hour to go to one. Because of that, I spent lots of time reading reviews and researching all the best kid's places around Chicago before deciding on Kohl's! It took us over an hour to get there, but it was worth it! Pros: Everything is clean. Sure, there are toys that have been played with thousands of times, but nothing is worn down and gross like other places I've been. There is a pretty large staff who are constantly monitoring the exhibits and cleaning up after the kids. I used two different bathrooms and they were both very clean and smelled normal. There are "infant areas" in every exhibit, so if you have both older and younger kids, the little ones are able to be in their own space, but in the same exhibit. Makes it easy to watch both without the little ones getting in the way! There are hand sanitizer pumps all over. The cafe was (of course) pricey but seemed to have a decent selection. We packed our own lunches, however, to save money. Even though there's a lot of staff all over, they aren't annoying, in your or your kid's way, and they all mostly seemed friendly. Free parking! Cons: I noticed a few exposed outlets which I thought was kinda weird..everything else is kid friendly. It's not terribly priced, but kids 1 and up are the same price as adults, ($12) so that was weird also. The outside playground only has spinning things (for lack of a better term) and big structures to climb on. Younger kids, like my 2 year old, can't really enjoy that. Overall, we spent 2 hours there and my daughter didn't even spend much time in every exhibit. We definitely could've been there all day, had we gone earlier. It's all hands-on, all fun. What a perfect way to spend a cold day! Yes it is crowded, yes it is chaotic, yes kids are rude and push your little angel out of their way to take an unwarranted turn on something your little darling has waited patiently for and yes those kids' parents are generally nowhere to be found, but if you can handle all that - this is a great place for your little ones. Parking is easy, entering is a breeze and then you just get ready to chase your little one around from area to area as they explore. There is lots and lots to do and unlike many other children's museums we have visited, everything is age appropriate for curious two year olds. I have a few minor comments and those are that at $9.50 per person, it can be a pricey day for a family of four. I wish the adult admission was a little less, but hey it seems to be working for them. We just won't be able to go as often as we'd like. Also, they have a nursing station; which I appreciated. The only issue was that it was more like a bench in the middle of the play areas and I swear it was a dad magnet. Of course I was covered, but I have to believe that every dad in that place walked in looking for a place to sit. It was actually quite comical to see all of their reactions. We spent about 3.5 hours at the museum with a two year old and an 8 week old. Glad we left the stroller at home, keeping the baby in the bjorn. We brought our own food in case we needed some snacks and a change of clothes so we could let the two year old go to town in the water room. read more

I however, don't see how an 8 year old would be kept busy in this place, since they claim to cater from birth-8. With the weather getting colder, I decided to buy the membership. This is great place to bring the kids. I feel like it caters to about 6 and younger. Maybe 6 is pushing it but still that irrelevant. They have all sorts of areas that push the imagination of the child. There is a grocery store, a veterinary, a book area, music area, hospital etc. It also has a water area which will get your children soaked but none the less it is fun. Some kd the water stations are not working but granted if i have to drag my child out of there because she refuses to leave then it is A-okay in ny book. The perfect spot to take a toddler for total energy burnout on a cold winter's day. Our daughter never tires of this place, and neither do I. The activities are engrossing for our 3 y.o., who has enjoyed visiting since she was about 2.5. It's a lot of fun to craft, read, and build things with her, but with so much fun stuff I also can relax a bit while she tinkers a way. They have reserved baby spaces (0-18 mo.s) and I have seen kids as old as 11-12 happily playing. The cafe on site is decent, and they offer military, WIC, and food stamp discounts.
