The idea of writing a review for a radio station isn't really something I agree with, since radio…read moreisn't really a place but more of a spectral entity that you may or may not choose to listen to... Still, 89.7 is that and more, remaining one of the most popular stations in the Omaha metro and competing with all of the commercial stations all while broadcasting from Iowa Western Community College. It's really a phenomenon more than anything else, and therefore deserving of a review. So for those rare times I switch the dial from 91.5 (public radio shout out!), The River is where I turn it to. It's like the radio version of a local farm-to-table restaurant competing on par with chain restaurants. Gotta love that - and the fact that their play-list keeps music from all decades, so even if you go on a River hiatus, when you come back it's like you never left.

Do you like alternative rock? Are you sick of stations run by media moguls such as Clear Channel?…read more Tired of hearing that same song everywhere you go? If so, this is the station for you. Hands down, this is the best radio station on town. 89.7 The River is a radio station run by Iowa Western Community College. While it's true that the announcers aren't the best in the world, the music selection makes up for it. This station will play anything from old school Beastie Boys, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Ween, Nirvana, and Soundgarden. They also play new alternative rock songs way before the corporate radio stations do. In fact, some artists I would have never listened to had it not been for The River. The station also puts on shows such as Rock Fest and River Riot on a yearly basis. Some of the headliners they have brought to town include Weezer, Stone Temple Pilots, Godsmack, Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, Blink-182, Korn, and many others. This station is purely supported by its sponsors and they hold a fund raising drive every year in April. It's certainly worth donating to!

This review is not for Kat Country as a radio station but for KAT country Fest. WORST experience…read moreI've encountered thus far. I don't know who to go to the voice my opinion but I am more than positive that somebody that attended found the correct person because I know hundreds if not thousands of people were very disappointed and voiced to me that they would be posted it on all social networks. I was never asked for my ticket so I would have been able to go for free rather than paying $150.00 for the group. Nobody was ever carded so who knows how old all the drunk people were. People were going to the bathroom where ever they found a place to squat. In front of thousands of people and around food fenders. Sure why not? We left the concert 40 minutes early to try to avoid some of the traffic. We were sadly mistaken. 2 1/2 hours later we hadn't moved more than 20 feet from our parking spot. There was nobody direction traffic. Nobody. When we asked a sheriff why- he let us know that we were not special and that EVERYBODY had been waiting over 2 hours. We asked why they were not as many sheriffs directing traffic as there had been on the way in and he said that there were just as many. WRONG!!! There was TWO sheriffs directing traffic and that was once you were able to get to the highway...3 hrs later. All the other Sheriffs and police were in there little groups hanging out in the command center area or driving around on 4wheelers. They were not doing anything. There were drunk people walking on the highway- people walking up to random cars trying to find food or water because they had been waiting so long. The most unsafe event EVER. Very disappointed and will definitely be telling all. I will NEVER attend this event again and I feel bad for the companies that sponsored the event because now they are going to be associated with such an event.

So glad they've been around for a couple years now! I remember sitting in NYC traffic when "Cool it Now" by New Edition came on. That song is amazing and also the type of song you'd never hear on Omaha radio at the time. Well, they play it occasionally on Mind & Soul and I cranked the song in my car the glorious moment I heard it on the air in Omaha for the first time. It's also pretty cool that they broadcast out of the Malcolm X birth site. Do yourself a favor and turn the dial to 101.3 FM. Since they're a nonprofit, even consider donating a little money to help them continue to grow.

We are constantly building to be the voice of the people, the voice of the movement, and a resource for uplifting the Black community. Listeners love the Classic Hip Hop, the Jazz education, the deep dive into Funk music, the emphasis on Black economic development, and the reports from the front line of today's "Fight the Power" movements. The station is dedicated to the concept of Self-Actualization and is a place where ideas are discussed, and unapologetic solutions for social justice are found and disseminated.
