Neighborhood Mom and Pop hardware store. It's a old school Manhattan Mom and Pop store. If you've been to the old school mangenarro's you'll know what i mean. So don't come here looking for good service but a gritty ny experience. They have a wide variety of items but to me they are very pricey for this neighborhood. The big ole box store down the block has similar items and at a more affordable price. To me i usually only come here to get keys made. Still a bit pricey but convenient. read more

I give this place 5 stars, because there aren't many businesses in NYC anymore that have knowledgeable employees who know the product they are selling. This place has a great selection, and a great staff. I came in Kove Bros Hardware looking for something very specific (butane for a food torch). Like any hardware store in NYC, they have to fit a lot of items in a small amount of space. So while it appears a bit messy of sorts, there's a place for everything. The gentleman behind the counter was extremely attentive and very helpful. The staff here spent a lot of time patiently helping me with a broken doorknob--from diagnosing the problem to figuring out what kind of piece was missing to doing some of the repair work themselves in-store (for free!). The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, even for people like me who know nothing about hardware. I went in to this store this morning inquiring about purchasing sand. I was informed that it only came in 40lb bags. I then asked if they carried cactus soil, as it is usually sand-based. The man behind the counter said no, that they only have 40lb bags. As I was exiting the store, I heard him mutter "Go to the BEACH!" I turned around and confronted him, indicating that it was a rude comment, and that I would NOT be back! As an African-American woman, a professional and small business owner looking for sand for a children's project, I can't help wonder if he would have been as rude to a person of a "lighter" ethnic background! read more

This morning I was walking my dog before the rain started. Kove Bros - one of the few remaining family hardware stores in Chelsea, had opened despite the coming storm. They actually had a small supply of the coveted "D" battery which had vanished in the pre-Sandy shopping frenzy yesterday. I had left the apt. without my wallet or cash. The owner gave me four batteries and told me to come back after the storm to pay. That would not have happened at Home Depot, Duane Reade or CVS. This place is great - no-nonsense items, helpful employees. I've gone to the other big hardware stores in the area (lowes & home depot) and the reality is that at Kove you can find 99% of the same items, twice as fast. The employees are incredibly helpful from the most basic asks to the more specific ones. Will keep going here because of the quality of their service. Unhelpful, dis-organized, clueless. This store is like a mad hoarder's attic, There is stuff everywhere and in no logical order. On the several times I have had to pick up the odd item, I have NEVER had a good experience. I have noticed if you have breasts that there is a much better chance of at least getting some attention - although perhaps not the kind you were after, If this is what "neighborhood feel" is all about, then it can't change quick enough. Very attentive and helpful staff. Only needed to replace one screw. The staff member took the time to find the two screws that were the closest match. The pack of 20 screws was only $1.59 for a pack of screws yet the service was no different than if I was purchasing a larger item. read more

Dubious that I'd find it in Manhattan, I found it at Kove Bro. Not only that, someone came out and filled my tire for me. Amazing customer service and they truly have everything. So bossy and never wait on you in order. whoever is the loudest, and speaks in spanish they will wait on first regardless of whether you were politely waiting for them to finish helping a prior customer. And when I was asking them which glue to use, the guy said, "have you used to crazy glue before?" to which i answered no without thinking. when later in the conversation i said I used it a bit once to repair ceramic piece he went on and on about "why did you say no before when I asked you? you should've said yes. did you not understand me? okay lets start again, have you used crazy glue before?" seriously for like 5 minutes. So rude. I don'T know why he was fixating on such a trivial aspect of the business. Never going ever again. read more

The guys who work here are very helpful. I had bought something and ended up not using it and they allowed me to return it for store credit. I also was having problems catching a mouse in my apartment and instead of telling me to buy more new traps, the owner of the store (I think) told me to keep the ones I had but wrap a string around the bait.
