Really efficient and friendly service - no need to feel confused at all once you enter the store! I picked up an online order for my friend last month and it was super easy. I was in and out in less than 2 minutes. Yesterday I went to pick up a fill valve and the employee at the counter immediately asked if he could help with anything right when I walked in. I showed him a pic and he directed me straight to the back where another employee helped me pick the item from the shelf and once again I was in and out in 5 mins. Located on First Avenue Ace Hardware is ideally situated for the residents of Stuyvesant Town. Of course they have many other neighborhood customers that also frequent the store. A lot of products are available from Benjamin Moore paints, games for children, gardening supplies to a multitude of cleaning products. I was in search for Bluette which I used to buy at Essex Market but after the pandemic was no longer stocked there. Here Mrs. Stewart's Concentrated Bluing was similar and I was delighted to finally find it. This is a product that I like to use for sheets and towels. Bottles of Soft scrub are sold for $4.99 which is the cheapest I have found. Keys are also cut here although one will be questioned if one stays at Stuyvesant Town as that's forbidden. Employees here are friendly and helpful taking customers to show them where the product is located. read more

I bought small desktop fan from this store then flew out of town for 6 weeks. (Maybe it was $40???? I do not know because I did not even look at the receipt). When I returned to town yesterday I decided to return it and get a larger floor model on AMAZON. I go to the store...they said no returns on fan. FINE. That is their policy, which they said is due to people buying, using and returning. I look at them and say nothing....proceed to look for something else in the store... NOW. They way the old man said all this to me was NOT FINE. RUDE. This guy should not be in front of any customers- he should be put in the deep back, or downstairs, far away from paying customers. Anyway- I return home to open the fan since I am stuck with it- and I open it and it totally looks used or damaged. See pictures. I walk back to the store to tell show him the irony of not accepting fan returns (he said because people could use them and then return them)- because they clearly sold me a damaged or used fan. He yells at me- they did not sell me that fan in that condition. I shop at this place all the time before this. THEY MOST CERTAINLY SOLD ME THIS SCUFFED UP FAN. I tell him I am not even asking for anything. I am just returning to show him the irony of the store policy. He again yells at me that they ABSOLUTELY DID NOT SELL ME THIS FAN. THEY ABSOLUTELY DID SELL ME THIS FAN IN THIS CONDITION. AND WHEN I RETURNED IT, IT HAD BEEN OPENED FOR THE FIRST TIME FOR ALL OF 5-10 MINUTES. ENOUGH TIME FOR ME TO OPEN IT AND ROUNDTRIP BACK TO THIS STORE. As much as I shop in this place and as much as I have spent here. I assure you- this was not worth losing this customer over the accusation that I lied about this fan. I will take my business elsewhere from here forward. I left the fan with them. This is how much this was NOT about the money. It was the principle. The poor product quality. The accusation that I lied. AND THE HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. 0/10. Go to another location, where they treat customers with respect and don't accuse frequent customers of lying. No one should be spending their hard earned money to be talked to or treated so disrespectfully. read more

I work in the neighborhood and often stop by this store to get materials for different projects because it is convenient ButI am never shopping here again. Bought a saw blade on the recommendation of one of the employees and wasn't sure it would work. I was assured by the associate that I could return it if it was unopened. Packaging was slightly damaged but it seemed fine so I figured give them the benefit of the doubt as a small business. The balder was the wrong size for my saw so I brought it back 3 hours later UNOPENED and in the same condition I bought it and was told that it was opened and could not be returned. I was talking to the same person who sold it to me. Turns out that associate is (supposedly) a manger and got confrontational with me when I challenged his assertion that the product was in the same condition I bought it in. This is the best hardware store in the neighborhood. I've been here a few times and It would get 5 stars but one guy doesn't know what he's talking about and was dismissive but he went to find someone else to help me and that guy was completely on point. All other times everyone's been super helpful. So if you get someone who isn't, try someone else. It's not Home Depot but it'll do for closeness, and definitely better than the other choices in the neighborhood. read more

They're a place I know I can trust to cut a key--and do it right--and if I have a question about a repair I have to make or an adhesive or a solvent, I can ask here. Neighborhood stores are hard to come by but this one meets the bill -- they take time to think with you about the hardware problems that need solutions. When I mop I bought was defective, manager Annette in particular helped me figure out what was wrong and find a better replacement. Long may they last! read more

This store has EVERYTHING and more! From their merchandise, selections, prices and most courteous staff this is the store you should make your "go to place" for ALL hardware needs. Most recently I had a free price quote from a popular window treatments store that was absurd! I THEN went to Brickmans and not only do they give you a FREE measurement AND quote for window treatments, specifically faux wood cordless blinds, but they also beat the "popular" windows treatments store quote and BRICKMANS cost was LESS THAN HALF THE PRICE of the popular windows treatment store -and yes Brickmans INCLUDES THE INSTALLATION! I had the one of the nastiest customer service provider "help" me. I need it a blind for my window came in here to a rude awakening a guy name "Lesly" or "LG" was in the counter as I approached. The blind was missing a piece that I need it to I was asking for help then he asked me with a spicy tone of voice to go home and measure it. I kept to my errands and decided to go back later that afternoon. I had taken the measurements and had them with me. I reminded him that I had been in the store earlier on that day to which he replied with a rather loud voice . Rolling his eyes at me and yelling and saying that my money wasn't good there to take my business some where else. I'm a firm believer that good customer service has to be of most important since that is the face of the business everyone sees when buying any place. Ruben, Carlos try to help but your other employees was renuent to sell the blinds to me. I am rather grateful Ruben for your business with this community and the ways I have seen you treat others is amazing but I will not be takin my business to your place anymore. We bought Christmas lights less than 24hrs before we returned them because they were so bright and they wouldn't take them back or give store credit because they weren't in their original packaging. We had a receipt and the packaging was just plastic (which you had to remove to even see if they worked) terrible workers with an awful attitude. So many lovely hardware stores around this area with amazing people. Do not spend any time or money with this place. read more

There's something about independent hardware stores that make me proud to be an American. Or tote around a hunk of wood like Hacksaw Jim Duggan. You rarely see them anymore, so when I have a chance to support a mom 'n pop variety, I make it my mission to do so. This isn't the closest hardware store to my apartment, but they have the best hours. Open early and closed late (for a hardware store), they're usually open when you need them the most. Rude Employee's that lock the door's over 10 minutes before close - I went in to get a plunger for an overflowing toilet and the employees refused to let me in even though they were still open for business. It would take less than 4 minutes to get a plunger and get out before "CLOSE" read more

Every neighborhood needs a hardware store with neighborhood know-how and is stocked with what the buildings around them needs. This place is one of those awesome places that literally has everything you need (canning supplies, beach toys, every screw ever made, lengths of chain, paint, yard tools, etc.). And if it's not in this location, they can get it from you from one of their two other stores. As is always the case when moving into a new apartment, we found ourselves needing more than a handful of "unusual" things, and this place was a God-send. Trying to find what you need all by yourself here is a bad way to approach the store. Know what you need, ask for someone to bring you to that aisle, make your choice and you're on your way. We did that twice inside of two hours and i have a feeling we'll be back... read more

I went there to get keys made but no one was at the key counter. A old man with glasses was in a aisle near the counter moving some small boxes. I asked him if anybody is working the key counter. His reply was "yeah, ask the guy at the key counter. Its called a key counter for a reason". I'm just dumb founded by that response. I'm asking him for a reason because apparently theres no one at the key counter...idiot. i go and ask another person walking down the aisle and he goes and intercoms for someone to assist a customer at the key counter. I wait back at the counter and guess who walks over, the old grumpy guy with the attitude. he didnt even make my keys but handed to the next guy who had a slight attitude when i told him about the other keys i had to make. Popped into this hardware store for some supplies as I was helping a friend settle into an apartment in the same building. I was surprised at how far back the store went and how much stuff they stocked beyond just your standard hardware/tools... they have a whole housewares section with dishes, Mason jars, kitchen tools, bath accessories, and more. I got some storage bins that were probably more expensive than if I went to The Container Store, but it was much more convenient than lugging that stuff in a cab back from the Flatiron! I came in here to get 3M Scotch plastic window insulation. I called in advance to find out what time they were open and if they carried the product. Answered on the first ring and were very friendly. Helped me find the product I needed quickly and a quick Google search indicates the price was right. It's too bad I don't require the services of a hardware store more often. Installing the window insulation on the other hand... let's just say that I perpetuate certain stereotypes about women that I would rather not elaborate on. read more
