I've been doing the Koz Series triathlons for three years now. Seems like I pretty smoothly run operation. Always fun. Look, there's always something to moan and groan about. Sure I'd like carpet in the whole transition area. Better swag, massages, But all this comes with a price. Ironman has all that stuff but it costs a ton of dough. These races seem a pretty good value. What we don't see is how much the city charges for permits and paying the cops overtime to be there plus who knows what else. I'm happy with what I get for my money. That's why I keep coming back. I've also done the Silver Strand half. I'm also looking forward to doing some bike events also. I'd would like to see a all inclusive annual pass. One fee, all events. 5, 6, 7 hundred bucks for the whole kit and caboodle. Bike race, half marathons and triathlon. read more

I have done a few Koz races and I know that dozens of volunteers get up early, spend their own money on gas, and stand around in order that this, commercial organization, can put on races and turn a profit. Irrespective of the need for Koz to use free labor to make money, taking advantage of people's goodwill, this is a great gesture by the volunteers and something I wanted to reciprocate. So I volunteered to be a swim buddy at the SheRox triathlon in 2012. I called the Koz events office, I was told to email them. I emailed them and they didn't reply. No acknowledgement of my offer, no "thanks but no thanks". Nothing. So I won't be bothering again. So if Koz put up their prices to pay for more staff, if they put out a plea for volunteers to help the events go ahead because they are short of free labor to help them make money, this kind of rudeness is likely to be the reason why. There are more and more events going on every year; each one further tapping into a finite (and dwindling through this sort of thing)supply of goodwill in the community (especially for people with skills, like strong swimmers). Casually dismissing people who are willing to spend their own time and money for nothing, so the company that runs the events can laugh all the way to the bank, will eventually come back and bite. When it does, don't believe the sob stories, they will have brought this on themselves. I've resolved not to do any Koz races this year because of this. read more

4th race that I have done with KOZ that has allowed cheaters to take the medals home. How Does a person Cheat to get medals you may ask? Currently I'm 270lbs/ 57 years old about 13 minute mile (4 more weeks) 1) Grandpa registers for a race, son or grandson wears his timing chip. Yes I've seen this happen. 2) Race in a different less competitive class. I look at the finishers picture and you can tell if someone is in the right age or in my case weight class, I protested this to KOZ events...Nope they don't care, it could be as simple as showing your drivers license and going by that weight. Or OK Clyde you have to come in and register (or when Sharpie is being applied at race day) and step on a scale. For the 5 and 10 K when you show up to pickup your bib, they always ask for ID. Or get rid of the Clydesdale class I'm not getting a placement medal anyway. 1st event) Spring Sprint 40+ Clydesdale my last dualathlon 55 years old 280 lbs (down from 300 lbs) When my team won 3rd place the year before I received a Pear sports device from work. So I decided although I'm a disabled Veteran to run the Dual the next year. I did a mile and a half in 43 minutes (yes turtle slow) but by the time this event came around I completed the 5k part in 40 minutes, when I arrived I was the only registered 40+ Clydesdale dualathlon. When I finished I was the only person in that category. But before the awards ceremony two names got a pen and ink change and I ended up taking 3rd. But you know why they didn't come up and claim their medals? But since we know bib numbers we can look at course pictures and see that the winners are not class 2nd) Silverstrand 5K 270lbs/ 56 years, I ran the Silver Strand 5K 40+ Clydesdale I didn't win any medals but what I did find interesting is the people that did win 1, 2, 3 didn't appear to tips the scales at 200 lbs much less at 220 lbs for men. They didn't show up for medals 3rd) Coronado valentine 10K, 270lbs/ 57 years same thing. Skinny people running against us lard ass...Errr I mean Clydesdale 4th) Silverstrand 5K 270lbs/ 57 years, this year I didn't wait for awards. had a couple of beers and called my wife to pick me up. But what I heard at Thanksgiving by 6 people that I run with at most of my 5K's and while they where waiting for thier medals, they saw a person that won a medal come up and get it, and everyone was looking at him like "no way you match the Athena weight" (Athena sounds better than calling a female a Clydesdale ) Look I'm proud of what I earned. If someone wants a medal then fine earn one but earn it. read more

Undoubtedly, Koz Events puts on some good races, and they have a great group of volunteers. By adding duathlons to their triathlon events, they open up multisport to a wider audience. Although I swim very well, I find it boring as hell and enjoy the torture of running twice as opposed to swimming once. That being said, I only gave Koz two stars for the following reasons... -Races are not USAT sanctioned -Considering they are not sanctioned, the races fees are RIDICULOUS -Not affiliated with any fundraising for a charity, which would make paying the high race fees bearable -Bike leg of the Surf Town Triathlon & Duathlon had horrible roads -Cater to people who live in San Diego area, when it comes to packet pick up (no one wants to sit in traffic to pick up a packet the day before the race, nor is it fair to charge an extra $10 for race day packet pick up) At the end of the day, if I am going to pay for an unsanctioned race, I'll sign up for the Semper Tri/Devil Dog Duathlon on Camp Pendleton and support our troops. read more

Last weekend I participated in the Mission Bay Triathlon as part of a relay team. I've done this race three times now and I always do the bike portion of the race. Our relay team name was "5th place" and we were just lucky enough to actually come in 5th. Wish I had such luck while betting at the Vegas Sports Books. Anyhow, every time I've done this race I'm amazed at how seamless everything runs. From your packet pick up the day before to getting markered up (to identify your age group / race you're in) Never had a line to wait in, and everyone's friendly. Parking can be far away, which would be expected I guess with 1500+ competiors, but there is alway plenty of it. The bike course is well marked and I don't have to worry about sharing the road with cars at all. The results of the race were posted the same day as the event which is nice too. The main gripe I have every year is waking up so early after spending the previous night living it up in the Gas lamp district. But I guess holding a triathlon in the mid day heat wouldn't work so well. One of the biggest perks is that the cost was $100 for a relay. (I think it's a little less if you sign up way ahead of time) I started looking at doing some other relay Tri's in So Cal and most are a lot more. A good experience at a low cost is a win, win in my book. I will do this Triathlon again for sure! read more

This is the worst company you can go with when it comes to cancel and obtain a refund for a race in case of circumstances you did not forsee. How they handle this is ridicules, you get an email that you have a couple of days left to get a refund in case you are not able to attend the race. That's a great reminder! After kindly asking to transfer the money back to you credit card, you get this answer, which was nowhere stated in the email previously sent: "Our Silver Strand "refund policy" is a partial refund to those who are injured or have a health issue that is confirmed by a doctor's note. Or, for those in the military who have an unannounced call-up, deployment or transfer. Or, those who have experienced a sudden death in their family." Really? So people with less serious issues cannot get their money back? And why partially? A doctor's note? Are we back in school? Mr. Rick Kozlowski, Race Director, please be a little bit more considered. read more
