Krause Springs was such a peaceful, whimsical little escape. The amount of lush greenery and massive old trees was unreal. Some of the tree roots were the biggest and most unique I've ever seen in my life. The whole place just had such a calm, magical feeling to it. One thing to note is that there are a LOT of stairs in many locations and most are very steep, so it's definitely not stroller-friendly if you are a family with young ones. If you're bringing little ones, just be mindful and watch your step going down the stairs toward the springs. The property itself is absolutely beautiful. You can either camp overnight or purchase a day pass. From what I remember, day passes were $10 per adult, kids under 3 were free, and camping was around $21 a night. They close the springs at 8:00 pm and for campers quiet time is from 10:00 pm to 7:00 am. No loud generators allowed for campers. They had so many little hidden coves and tucked-away areas where you could set up camp, which made it feel really private and peaceful. I was also very impressed with how clean everything was. The bathrooms and showers were pristine, very sanitary, and conveniently located within walking distance of the entrance. One surprise I didn't expect was that they also have a separate swimming pool in addition to the springs, which ended up being great because the water at the springs was a little murky the day we went due to recent rain. Still gorgeous to look at though, especially with the waterfall. It honestly felt surreal, like you forgot you were still in Texas. They also have a beautiful butterfly garden with tons of unique plants and greenery that made the experience interesting. Overall, this place just gave off such a good feeling. Peaceful, relaxing, beautiful, and definitely a must-see if you enjoy nature. We'll absolutely be returning again. read more

Beautiful hidden gem in hill country. There is a modest entrance fee that allows you access to the whole space - the natural springs, the man-made pool, butterfly garden, and more. The man-made pool has spring water; this is where I would recommend families with children or inexperienced swimmers go. It's lovely and more of a managed pool setting. We hiked down the stone steps to reach the natural springs which are so beautiful with a picturesque mini waterfall and a rope swing as well! However swimming here can be treacherous. I highly recommend water shoes as there are lots of rocks and moss in the springs. Water depth also varies greatly from one spot to another so it's important to be aware of that. Water temperature was comfortable and cool - felt great on a hot summer day. Wrapped up our visit in the garden, which is so beautifully maintained. Absolutely lovely and zen. The changing room and bathroom facilities are clean and easily accessible. We left feeling dry, happy, and peaceful after a wonderful day in nature. read more

We visited Krause Springs for July 4th weekend and was pleasantly impressed! Perfect family spot that was well managed without the craziness as other places may be that are full of drunks. Love that they have rules in place that prevent loud music to allow everyone to enjoy the place. The kids loved the rope swing but must warn it is challenging getting down to the lower pool as the rocks can be very slippery! The upper pool is spring fed and very cold but clean and leads to an awesome waterfall emptying into the lower pool. We also enjoyed walking through the botanical garden and listening to the many wind chimes throughout. Definitely hope to visit again in the future! read more

Knocking off a star for the most evil Texas bug bites I've had but that really isn't Krause Springs fault. About 40 mins west of Austin this place is the perfect day trip to cool down in the heat. Bring your sunscreen, snacks, towel, drinks and a good book and headphones. The water is so cold and feels great when it's so warm outside. Great fun, get there early. The gardens are wonderful. Didn't see any docent or garden folks and would appreciate if they gave classes. Or just to tell what we are seeing. We debated bringing young kids but think 5+ is best range. Slippery rocks and one on one attention for little ones! Not pets, smoking or glass. Dint see anyone policing but didn't see violators ether. I suppose the over abundance of signs helps. The water was wonderful but earliest is better because it got crowded in a Saturday of many with more tatoos than most. In the nice garden they have hundreds of pots. I seriously love this place! It's about a 45 min to an hour drive from where I live in Austin and I had been wanting to visit this place since I first moved to Texas. There always seemed to be a reason why my friends couldn't make it so on a whim, I decided to just take myself! The parking situation was easy enough. I did go on a Wednesday in August mid-day. The gentlemen at the entry were very kind and helpful. There was a $10 entry fee and they accept cash and cards. Overall, the property is a lot smaller than it appears online, but that doesn't matter much at all to me. I absolutely love the fact that they have so many different shaded areas for you to sit and relax. As many others mentioned before, the rocks can be quite slippery so just make sure you are prepared for that. I didn't get a picture of the waterfall or the rope swing but that seems to be the popular attractive around these parts. I personally went for the butterfly garden on the 4th year anniversary of my Dad's passing. This place was exactly what I needed to just feel at peace and zen. The natural spring was clear and a tad low in water level which is to be expected when it doesn't rain enough. I changed shoes from sneakers to Chacos; BIG mistake. I slipped on the limestone within minutes and hit/cut my shin. It developed a hematoma and was bleeding BUT, I preserved! Get here early before they open and you'll have an amazing time for pictures! Then once the place fills up mid day you'll have an amazing time living life and enjoying friends and family! There is this butterfly garden that is incredibly peaceful super early in the mornings and it has oversize human length wind chimes hanging from the 100 year old trees just calmly chiming in the wind as you observe different cacti, flowers, and butterflies. There were tons of hidden trails all over the property that brought you to secluded springs, mini waterfalls, and crystal clear natural "hot tub" that were a brisk 65° haha! I made sure to lay down in those natural tubs and let the water flow over my body as I enjoyed the sounds of nature! The main body of water was cleaner in the morning but after a full day of people swimming and swooshing around and cliff diving and rope swings the water was pretty brown / muddy by the end of the day. But nonetheless it's still spring fed water so it felt great! There are beautiful campground here and all over the property you'll find BBQ pits and places to set up for lunch! I was seriously jealous walking around smelling all the fajitas and burgers getting cooked as I was empty handed haha! Fair warning it does get slippery on the walk down to the main natural pool and it requires a little bit of maneuvering but most people made it down fine! Just be extra careful They also don't allow smoking down by the pools they say you have to smoke in or near your car in the parking lot, which was more than okay with me! Great photo ops with the waterfall. Bring your tube! The rocks are hella slippery even when dry so be real careful. Most spots in the water are neck deep. Me, my husband and my 7 year old wanted to check out Krause Springs and we weren't disappointed! It was our first visit and we chose tent camping. When we arrived we were very impressed with the landscaping and layout of the property. There were flowers and fun vegetation everywhere. The cyprus trees blew us away! We had plenty of options for tent camping and we chose a fairly secluded place that had one of the springs running next to it. There were plenty of bathroom options and we were close enough to walk from our campsite. The property was very clean and not too crowded for a Friday-Saturday camping trip in July. The RV sites seemed to be more popular and crowded with not only RV's but tent campers as well. It was nice that anyone could reserve an RV spot but we enjoy having a little more space and privacy over electricity. It's camping so it kinda goes with the description. The spring water in the man made pool was a little chilly but it wasn't too cold to enjoy a swim for a bit. When you walk down to the natural pool you do have to be careful not to slip on the rocks. They do have steps on part of the trail down but you can also walk up the creek bed through the bushes to access the pools. The scenery is so beautiful! There were waterfalls and some little caves. They had a rope swing and a cliff you could jump off of. Everyone was very friendly and shockingly my husband and I seemed to be the only people drinking beer. We even looked around to make sure we weren't breaking any rules. It was nice that the crowd attracted while we were there was wholesome and pleasant. There was plenty to explore as well. Of course when exploring you have to be alert. We saw turtles, frogs, lizards, and even a coral snake. We had all our food sealed in airtight boxes and put our trash bag in the car overnight since we saw a family of racoons walk by our little spring. 4.5 This place is pretty awesome. I had never been to a springs before so this was a treat. This is a privately run area so there are not a ton of people there. It was pretty empty near the spring when we got there. There are a ton of steep stairs down to the pools so be aware. The first pool is a swimming pool with spring water and the second is a natural spring with waterfalls. That is the one we swam in. There's a tree with a rope swing, though I wasn't brave enough for that. You can swim here but be careful, there are rocks and branches down at the bottom. It's not too deep. Some areas were about 6 to 8 ft down. You may encounter turtles. We met a few. After a while people began to stream in so we packed it in and left. There is also a really pretty garden with flowers and chimes. I'd recommend it. read more

Went here for a friend's birthday with a few other girlfriends and it was an amazing way to spend a Saturday summer afternoon! The drive from Austin was calm and the parking lot is very big. Adult tickets were $10. You can bring in food so I suggest having a rolling cooler or a wagon to make it easy to bring in your food, drinking water, blankets, towels, and miscellaneous other stuff! We laid out all our stuff at the upper area/pool area and then went down to lower area/waterfall when we wanted. Bring your water shoes as it's slippery down there. There is a beautiful walk thru "butterfly garden" at the entrance with big wind chimes, tons of different succulents, flowers, fern and more! The pool was cold and refreshing with sitting/picnic area. Down below was the spring which was pretty murky water but felt great. Waterfall cool for photos, a cliff to jump into the water about 20ft, and rope swing. Coming to Krause Springs in times of covid is alerting. It looks like an absolutely normal day coming here. Crowds are abundant, and the beauty and magic of this place loses its luster. If you're trying to get pictures of/with the cascading waterfall you've seen all over Instagram, GOOD LUCK. After the rain, the water gets murkier than usual. You don't need to be a strong swimmer, but you definitely need to have basic swimming knowledge, as parts of the water can run deep. The trick to avoiding the crowds on the weekends? Overnight camping, which is offered at Krause Springs. You get the grounds to yourself, along with the other campers. By the time 9:00 AM hits, the crowds pour in. Since this is a privately owned venue, there aren't any employees around to monitor anything. I saw a family of 5 of 9 ask to use the restroom, and never came back out to pay the entrance fee per person... MUST DO! Krause Springs has been family owned for over 50 years and is listed on the National Registry of Historical Sites. I first visited Krause Springs in the 80s when I was living in Austin. I almost don't want to share this well kept secret as it's one of the last remaining family owned watering holes around. Krause Springs has 32 springs on 115 acres with many feeding the manmade pool up top and the natural pool down below the cliffs which flows into Lake Travis. I prefer the natural swimming hole but here's a warning: it's a steep walk to pack your stuff in and out. Rocks can be slippery around the pool so wear water shoes, not flip flops. Also visit during week days as it can be very overcrowded on weekends. My last visit there was way too many kids for my liking. It would be really cool if it was adults only so we could relax in the beautiful scenery. Camping is available with both primitive tent camping as well as 24 RV sites with water and electricity. Be sure to also take time to stroll through the Butterfly Gardens with wind chimes and fountains to soothe your soul. This park is truly one of a kind. If you're looking for an outdoor event space, or to take some pictures that will take your breath away...please do come here! They even have the most beautiful butterfly garden and all of the wildflowers in the spring time. I really do think I underestimated how lovely this place was until I actually came here. It's like an oasis of peace and serenity. I ended up doing a relaxed trail run here (yes that is what I do to relax...RUN haha) and enjoyed the festivities at the annual trail running festival. Pick your flavor, full marathon, half and even 5k/10k for all of you taking the leap into a consistent running routine! If you are new to trails I will say the course out there is technical and not for the faint of heart. Lots of climbing, rocks, roots and opportunities to bust your hiney. But hey...that's why it's FUN...right!? Gotta add a little difficulty. This part of hill country truly is something special and whether you are coming here to run the trails, float the river, or wedding photos you will fall in love with it just like I did. How have I never been to Krause Springs before? Is it worth the drive? Yes! Do I want to live in the butterfly garden? Double YES! I recommend arriving early. It opened at 9:00 and we arrived at 9:30 and it was perfect. The parking lot was just starting to fill up and we won the jackpot and found a spot in the shade under a large tree. They take credit cards but prefer cash so plan accordingly. There are a ton of picnic tables and even places to grill and tons of shade. The rocks can be slippery so wear sturdy water shoes like Chacos (this is not a sponsored comment) #chacosponsorme You'll want them in the water as well. I don't like touching the bottom but that's just me. Arriving early helps you get a shady spot before the crowd shows up. I was with a three year old and a baby and we left around noon and people were still flowing in. I will be honest, it's not the best place for a baby. As mentioned above, the rocks are slick so walking with a baby wasn't easy for my friend. I had to hold her hand several times as she made her way across the rocks. The three year old had a great time. There is a cool rope swing for people watching and a high cliff where people were jumping. Some people froze at the edge and people would chant or count down for them. It was cute! A soft sided cooler is the easiest thing to bring but I saw some people with hard sided coolers with wheels and even someone with a wagon. I don't know how they got that down there! It isn't that easy to get in and out of the water but it's doable. I suggest some noodles or a tube to lounge around. Spend some time wandering around the butterfly garden. It's wonderful. There are lots of water features and way in the back corner is a hammock. I tried to give "mean stares" LOL to the person in the hammock but let's be real. If I had gotten there first I would have camped out and never left. I didn't really give anyone mean stares. I'm kidding! I tried to "will" him out of the hammock with my mind but alas, my super powers were a bit off today. Finishing thoughts: Get there early. Bring cash. Bring water. Bring snacks. A beautiful place to spend an afternoon in the water and enjoy the outdoors. The scenery is breathtaking and there is plenty of room to find a spot to hangout in the shade. Lots of people brought coolers and bags with packed lunches. There are seating areas as well as spots on the rocks where you can sit. We saw two waterfalls and one was a bit hidden, so we were able to take a nice picture. There are also camping areas along the Riverbend. The only downside was the restroom. There was only 1 stall and no door, so you would need someone to stand guard so no one walks in on you & there were several wasps. If you plan on going, you can bring water in non-glass containers and water shoes are recommended because it is very slippery on the rocks. There is a cost to go in (see picture). read more

Spicewood, TX. This review is for a visit on a Wednesday afternoon. There were quite a lot of people here, I would probably avoid a weekend. The small pool is just a commercial swimming pool fed by the spring. It is way too small for the number of people, mostly children. I assume the spring flows through it so there are no chemicals? The natural pools are really quite nice. As more people arrived the water became murky but not objectionable. It's deep enough to swim even though it is a bit on the chilly side. The adjoining flat rocks are a nice place to dry off in the sun. Pretty stunning views when seen without people. There are no trash cans near the springs, you have to carry your trash all the way up the hill. I don't mind this but lazy folk do not bother. Bathrooms are weird, no changing area, no privacy. Garden is nice, the giant wind chimes have a nice tone. The butterfly trees attract a lot of black swallowtails, a smaller type I have not seen before, very cool. Tried to hike downstream but it was impassible and the area was mostly stagnant pools. Surprise though, no bugs! read more

What a unique and fun experience. My wife and I were planning on going to Hamilton Pool Preserve but they sold out so quick. This place appeared on Yelp when we were looking for alternative activities. Krause Springs is about a 1 hour drive from Austin which isn't too bad. We got there when it opened since it read it gets pretty crowded. We got there at 9am and were the 2nd party that had arrived (parking lot only had 1 car parked). Its cash only to get in and I dont remember how much it was but its definitely less than $10pp. They also have a pump for your floaty which we didn't use since I had already killed my lungs the hour before the drive to inflate it. If you love to swim, Krause Spring has a natural area with a rope swing that is pretty fun. Water was lukewarm too. If you don't like the natural water, there is actually a pool you can swim at too. If you are done chilling in the water, there is a butterfly garden to walk around. People can also come and picnic or camp. Definitely recommend. read more

Cool retreat from the TX sun. It's warmer than Barton Springs, but cooler than Lake Travis. I thought it was just right. It's smaller than I expected-I can imagine there wouldn't be a lot of space on the weekend to set up your patch of earth with a chair or two. So my recommendation is to play hooky or take a "mental health" day during the week. All the people were super chill-friendly, fun, and just generally social. We floated around,swung on the rope swing, stood under the waterfall, enjoyed a cold drink, and chilled in our chairs on the water's edge. It was really a nice afternoon escape. They have a compressor to blow up your inflatables. There is a limit on float size- no bigger than 5' tall. They also have a man made pool with spring water as well as the natural spring area, which is more scenic. It honestly doesn't feel like you're in Texas anymore- the large old trees create dappled light and protect visitors from the Texas sun. The waterfall was a great sight and felt amazing in the hot sun. Great for pictures. There is a natural pool in the middle section, not the main attraction but good to bring smaller kids too. The main attraction takes a couple more steps to get to. The rocks can be slippery when going down to the water. BRING WATER SHOES. High Recommend. Tons of rocks and not much smooth surfaces. I think your view of Krause Springs will change depending on when you go. I've been during a hot summer day when it was overcrowded, no room to put your things (there is no lawn, per se, where you can keep an eye on your stuff), the water has been churned up by many feet so the pool is murky, you're basically elbowing other families for space in the water or on the slippery rocks. I've also been on a warm fall day after school is back in session and have basically had the place to ourselves -- beautiful green water, idyllic waterfalls, lovely scenery. I would not recommend Krause for busy watering-hole fun more than once a summer; it's worth the experience once, but there are better pools for cheaper and closer (Krause's $8 vs. Barton Spring's $3pp). It really is beautiful though. read more

Spent a great Saturday at Krause Springs with a couple of friends. The butterfly garden is beautiful and would be a lovely spot for any kind of photography portraits. The swimming was nice and cool on a hot Summer day. Expect slime/moss. It is a natural spring/swimming hole so there will be nature there. While we were there on Saturday there were a lot of families with a lot kids, so splashing was a thing. Only about a 50 minute drive from central Austin, we found a lovely oasis at Krause Springs, in Spicewood, TX. The park-like grounds are spacious, with plenty of parking. After paying the $9 admission, we began a delightful afternoon. First we enjoyed the beautiful tropical garden, that I wasn't even expecting. We brought a great picnic lunch, and enjoyed it on their nice picnic grounds. Close-by we saw a large area with many campers and tents. After our picnic, we returned our extra baggage to the car, then we took the short walk down the easy paved path to the huge natural springs below. The water was cool and perfect and not too deep. We we truly appreciated how nice the water was. It was late June, so as the afternoon progressed, many families with large inflated tubes came. We had enjoyed several hours there, so we left in mid-afternoon. They stay open until 9:00PM in the summer, so I would recommend coming early, before noon, or enjoy a late afternoon swim and dinner picnic. We loved Krause Springs and will definitely return! P.S. Be sure to wear some older athletic shoes, or water shoes, for navigating the slippery rocks into the water, at the end of the path. read more
