The gallery used to be located in SoHo, but moved in 2007 to a midtown building on a quiet part of W. 29th Street. Inside, a guard irreverently bumping Rhianna told me to take the elevator to the 6th floor. There, I immediately found a large, clean, and handicap accessible bathroom. After washing up, I stepped into a brightly lit gallery with chairs set up for "On the Waterfront," a special panel about water conservation and quality as it pertains to New York City residents. Not only did they have chairs set up for this completely free event, they provided personal fans because the AC would be turned off in order to film the panelists. Much to my surprise, there was even a table set up with servers who poured generous amounts of high quality red and white wine into compostible cups made of corn (no, you can't taste the corn, and the cups look just like plastic). There was even a punch bowl full of vodka, curacao, and ice for those who wanted something harder. And of course, there was water. Cheese, strawberries, crackers, and delicious guacamole with large avocado chunks were among the offerings. A large part of my high review for this venue has to do with the excellence of the panel itself (though the water-themed photographs, paintings, and mixed media pieces on display were also extremely interesting and pleasing to the eye). The panelists included big-time author of "Bottlemania" Elizabeth Royte and "Gasland" documentary director Josh Fox (gaslandthemovie.com). Everyone spoke articulately, expertly, and urgently about how important it is to be aware of where we get our water. After the event, everyone was invited to eat and drink more, and mingle with the down-to-earth panelists. I have full confidence that any organization that can put together an event of this caliber is sure to do it again. So, I look forward to scoping the Atlantic Gallery's future events and exhibits. It's in a building that looks residential or even abandoned from the outside...but on the inside, you will find a refreshing haven full of beauty and enlightenment.

The 21st Street location is bigger than the old space, but has the same vibe. The last Bonakdar Gallery exhibit I saw was an awesome Gillian Wearing show. The gallery has since expanded to Los Angeles and features an impressive roster of artists, including Olafur Eliasson, Tomas Saraceno and Ernesto Neto. Highly recommended!

He's also painted the same art on the wheat paste boards outside of the Daryl Roth Theatre near Union Square. Then I checked out Build it Green across the street. They carry a lot of used appliances, doors, and building supplies that have been refurbished. If you're interested in building & renovating with reclaimed pieces, this is a good place to start. Next door is Gowanus Ballroom. Around the back is the Arts complex, and housed within is Farmigo, a small food tech startup. You don't know what food tech is? Neither did I until Meetup recommended this event. It's pretty cool, they host these monthly storytelling sessions. They're all about the local food movement. At the event I met some really interesting people, who were doing startups, non-profits, and social-good stuff, and lived in the neighborhood. They even had some really amazing snacks on hand, and some craft beer to top it off. Farmigo is what would happen if you took the Avon-lady party idea, and brought it to local farmer distribution. They have farmigo parties, people order from local farms in upstate new york, or the north east region. Then buyers pickup at these various drop points, some of them happen as a sort of community party that's a lot like a tupperware party from the 70's & 80's. Farmigo makes it all happen, by providing the online platform to connect everybody together. After the talk, I went to grab my bike. In another part of the arts complex, giant sculptures are being formed & burning man scale giant art is being forged. Wow, cool stuff. Can't wait to come back next week. My company recently had our company holiday party here a month ago…read more This event space/place is best accessible by mass transit. If you drive, just a friendly advice - there's not a lot of parking spaces available. You would have to take a chance and park at the Lowe's parking lot or down a few blocks. Gowanus Loft is located in a somewhat dead neighborhood.While walking up to our space, it was quite confusing to get around, but luckily there were signs pointing to where our party was. The Gowanus Loft doesn't have much decor. It felt very much like a warehouse we were entering into or an old art gallery. The stairway was very narrow. The space we had was spacious and just enough room to walk around, mingle, and hang out. The food I think was provided by an outside caterer. It was delicious and amazing! In addition, we had an open bar. The restrooms are single stalls and reeked of cigarette scent. Yuck! To make matters worse, there was only ONE sink and that sink didn't seem to work very well either or not work at all. I wasn't 100% impressed with this space because it didn't seem holiday party-worthy. I'm not sure what the other guests thought of it, but we've done better the last two years because we used an event space at the Fairfield Inn in Gownaus, Brooklyn.

This might get a little confusing, but Photomag was actually bought by Post Works several years…read moreback. It is now an imprint of Post Works, their midtown division (Post Work's main place is in south Soho), yet it still has a general website and keeps the name depending on what listing you're looking at. Anywho, I actually never used this place pre-Post Works takeover, but I can tell you under the new ownership, its a really nice place to get all of your video post services done, and the student rate for developing was very reasonable. This place is for post production on video, whether it be transfers, developing and processing, and I think they have editing suites available as well. Let's start with the basics, when you walk in there is a lovely and gorgeous receptionist to greet you, and small offices are occupied by professional looking staff. And they are professional and incredibly helpful (this is the one thing that separates post houses from production houses, the people actually are decent human beings). They set up a time for us to do a telecine transfer, and while I was waiting I took a look around. There are a few huge transfer rooms, as well as a stocked kitchen with snacks and goodies, a lounge, a pool table, plasmas, leather couches, etc. It's typical so that directors and clients can feel at home. It's a very posh space. Developing is on a different floor, the 17th if I remember, and the staff there is just as helpful, if a bit more hurried. Slow them down, and they'll oblige; they are very fast and as I stated earlier, the rates were good, I ended up paying a suspiciously modest amount for a Super 16 development, and I pushed it 2 stops (which I don't think cost more anyway). Coming back down to finalize plans, you are greeted again by the lovely and gorgeous receptionist, one time her name was Rachel, the next I couldn't remember, but anywho..... When I did the supervised transfer, we had Scott 1 (there was another Scott), who was our go to guy to help us through. He was pretty quick, and they gave us a deal in that they discounted/pro-rated our session because he had to take a bit longer putting it to tape. The room wasn't immaculately equipped (my dp, the dork he is, said that we could have had some sort of software gagdetry something or other that was just wicked cool), but it had just about everything else you could ask for, and Scott was quick and could do more than we asked for. This happened twice, once with principal footage, second with reshoots. Both very good. Photomag/Post Works just has a very professional attitude about their work, and it shows and I would definitely recommend it.
