I hate calling attention to my need for medical care, but i feel i owe it to my many fans out there as well as those who simply consult yelp for guidance to report a good physician when i come across one. i first consulted Dr. Wingfield for a frozen shoulder. i had previously seen a surgeon about this who injected cortisone in the area but somehow missed the spot. within a month the problem resurfaced. a good friend mentioned Dr. Wingfield who, sure enough, did it right; the problem completely disappeared. the latest issue was a minor tear of the labrum in the right hip socket, and for this i decided to forego the surgical route altogether and return instead to the fine doctor who had so capably fixed me up before. there are differences between a shot of cortisone in the shoulder versus in the hip; the difference that means the most difference to me is the length of the needle used for the injection. one thing i have to confess at this point is how much i hate needles, have since i was so very young that all i remember from my first vaccination is the color of the doc's office building (still hate pink for this reason) and the sharp pain. on the other hand as i think on it, my dislike of needles has actually stood me in good stead as a very protective limitation in another realm altogether; the aversion drew a certain line in the sand if you know what i mean, and if you know that's about all i care to say on this anyway. it turns out that the needle for this procedure is about 3 inches long, and of course knowing this caused me no end of misery just thinking about it. "please, Dr. Winfield, be gentle," i whined. "oh, this won't be so bad as all that. what, did someone tell you something about this?" but of course by then it was too late, the needle was already in sight which was enough. still, i soldiered on. and then, almost before she started doing anything, she said simply, "you can open your eyes now, Bob, it's done." it had been almost painless. in short, Dr. Wingfield is amazing in my book, knows what she's doing, and at least in my case so far she doesn't hurt. she is herself quite an accomplished athlete in numerous sports, including of all things high wire trapeze performance. I highly recommend her for any sports and exercise injuries that may not require an operatio, and in that regard will consult her opinion should an orthopedic surgeon suggest "you might do well to fix that." read more

Had an excellent experience with Dr Wingfield today. We went in for my 11 year old son's ankle. She was very thorough in her exam and questioning and concise and clear in her description the injury. She also gave clear directions on how to proceed to get the ankle healed. She was great about telling him exactly what he was allowed to do. I would give her 6 stars if I could-- Dr. Wingfield is an incredible doctor. I've had shoulder/knee issues for the past two years and with her guidance and recommendations, I can 100% attribute the progress i've made to seeing her. Each time I have gone to see her I am met with a thorough examination, knowledgable diagnoses, and immediate treatment for any issues I am having. For instance, I went in today to get a cortisone shot in my shoulder to relieve the pain that wakes me up almost every night and before getting into doing it, she walked me through a very thorough ultrasound of my shoulder muscles to determine if there were any larger issues we were dealing with. It was fascinating to see and she showed me insights about my injury which no other doctor has ever done. I completely respect her opinion, value her practice, and recommend her wholly to anyone dealing with injuries. read more

Not worth the wait... She was unable to find two cracked ribs. Her ultrasound machine was not properly maintained so it couldn't save photos and she was unable or curious enough to compare ultrasounds to monitor progress. read more

Dr. Wingfield is a great sports doctor. I inflamed my achilles doing a century ride with some new shoes and further aggravated it running the next day. After 2 weeks of DIY treatment to no avail, I setup an appointment with her at the SF St Francis location. Luckily she had a spot open the next day! At first I didn't want to waste my time seeing a doctor. I thought for sure she'd just tell me to take a couple of ibuprofens and don't train for 2 months. But my friend, a hardcore ironman triathlete always sees her and convinced me otherwise. In fact she's an athlete herself and understands that folks like us wouldn't just sit still and let things heal while big races are upon us. I like that she balances medical advice with the realities of life. She gave me a full regiment of stretching, massage, ice, ART therapy, strength exercises, and a perscription for some dang expensive medicated pads. I was able to get through my race adequately. And now I have more time to properly heal before next year. Go see Dr. Wingfield, she takes insurance... in network for me. And if prescriptions aren't covered by insurance, she will try to give you an OTC alternative... especially for $180 medicated patches! read more

My partner was referred to Dr. Wingfield for physical therapy by our primary care provider for sciatica-like pain. We thought she might be able to help, but not really. First off, the appointment was 30 mins late, which was stressful. Next, we had an one hour appointment, but she only saw her for 15 mins (on top of her being late) and gave her a prescription for ibuprofen which we were already taking. She did a very fast examination and gave an uncertain diagnosis, she didn't go through any physical therapy, and just gave us a sheet for PT providers! Even though we had been referred to her for PT, not just a diagnosis. Very disappointed with the overall treatment. Not what we were expecting for such a long drive out of town... read more

Dr. Wingfield and the Center for Sports Medicine have saved my back! I visited two different doctors before I was able to find someone who would take an integrated approach to the injury and not just give me drugs and tell me to wait 4 weeks and see what happens. Dr Wingfield and her staff are caring, competent, attentive and really know what they are talking about. A high performing athlete herself, Dr. Wingfield understands not just the medical component of sports injuries, but the psychological component as well. I've been delighted by the referrals she's given me too. I'm waay better than I was when I hobbled into her office in pain two months ago. Frankly, she is probably the best doctor I've been to in years and her office is so well run-- she's almost never running late and her staff knows everyone by name. It is really unusual in this day and age of medical offices that feel more like health factories to find an office and a doctor who operates at such a high level. read more

A friend of mine referred me to her as I was unhappy with my previous doc. I went for a simple check on my ankle that I messed up pretty bad 2/3months ago. I was happy to find somebody that was taking the time to walk me through my injury, the seriousness of it and what I can expect in terms of recovery time and challenges for the future. All the above is what you would expect from your doc. but they don't all provide this. Plus she was clear, concise and super nice. I have been having lower back problems for years. That said, I have been going to St. Francis Hospital for years. I am completely against chiropractors tweaking my back and stand true to my preference for MDs. The thing that initially drew me to St. Francis back in the day was their great Sports Medicine department. And that's what keeps me coming. Normally I see Dr. Loosli (who I really like) but the other day I had a back emergency (i.e. in tears at work because I was in so much pain). I called and they told me Dr. Wingfield had an opening in the afternoon. I took it. She was great! I never felt rushed (nor do I ever with Dr. Loosli) - she went through different movements with me to feel out the severity of what I was experiencing, etc. Many people told me to fear that a doctor might bring up 'surgery' as an early option (which would be the WORST thing) - but I always found the doctors here to be very conservative - with such a great Sports Medicine program, they tend to have physical therapy be the primary treatment. Dr. Wingfield gave me a couple prescriptions, had me take some xrays (to compare to the ones I had there 4 years ago), and prescribed me physical therapy. I will meet with her again in a few weeks to go over my xray results. It's such a great feeling knowing that I have great people to tend to my back, when the need arises. :) read more

I saw Dr Wingfield today about a ski injury and found her to be quite knowledgeable, thorough in her evaluation, and rendered excellent advice on treating the injury. As an athlete I have visited several orthopedists, and found Dr. Wingfield to be one of the best, if not the best! I can't say enough good things about Dr. Wingfield. I have been seeing her for a year and a half for both a hamstring tear and problems with a knee. I recently moved to the area and my sports medicine dr. from the east coast referred me to Dr. Wingfield. I have been trying to repair a hamstring injury that is over 6 years old. I have been working with Dr. Wingfield for the last 3 months. In my first appointment Dr. Wingfield took the time to review years of records, MRI reports, etc. which I brought from my old dr. We took a new MRI and discovered tendinitis, so treatment began immediately. She has referred me to a physical therapist who specializes in pilates and I am now on a PT regimen that is very different from any program I have tried in the past. I am making progress and I feel I have a reliable and extremely knowledgeable resource in Dr. Wingfield. BEST of all, Dr. Wingfield just "got me" and the frustration I am feeling for how long this injury has been going on. I was so relieved I ended up in tears in her office. I have been a high-intensity, competitive athlete all my life and Dr. Wingfield understood that I can't just sit on the couch and let this heal. Dr. Wingfield is an excellent doctor, and so are her physical therapists. I have received very good physical manipulation of soft tissue, instruction and correction of exercises, and many tools/methods for self-massage, posture, sitting correctly in a chair, etc. Everyone is very happy to answer all of my questions and tailor my routine according to my own knowledge level (in yoga, for example) and interest. The PTs I have worked with are very good in traditional PT, plus are high-level yoga practitioners, and some are Pilates certified. My PT dovetails with what I can do at the health club. I am very pleased with all the progress I have made with my back, neck, etc. Dr. Wingfield is very knowledgeable and great to work with. Right now she is at the Winter Olympics as a doctor for the athletes. I'm just a regular person, but I think the best recommendation is that professional athletes and performers go to her--people who require a high-level of performance and well-being for their livelihood. Worst doctor ive been to in 10 years. I went in with a brace and only one working hand. Despite this, she ordered me to remove the brace myself...not an easy thing to do. When I showed her the xrays she couldnt tell what was broken. When i told her it was my wrist she told me i needed to see a hand specialist. When she tried to put my brace on again she said "hmmm. How does this go again? Does this look right? Ah, whatever, you can fix it later" THERE ARE MANY BETTER DOCTORS AT UCSF. DOCTOR WINGFIELD IS HORRIBLE. read more

Dr. Wingfield is amazing. She manages to convey the same information in two sentences that it might take someone else 15 minutes to do, but she never makes you feel rushed. She's incredibly smart and her knowledge is apparent in everything she says and does. I broke my ankle 3 months ago and Dr. Wingfield always made me feel like it was going to be okay in the end while taking my injury very seriously. I was referred to Dr. Winfield for a back issue I was having which turned out to be a bulging disk. She is very professional and knowledgeable. We tried PT and acupuncture but unfortunately, the pain escalated to the point that I was taken to the ER. I called her assistant Annie on a Friday afternoon desperate for help. Dr. Wingfield called me a short time later and personally contacted a surgeon, Dr. Brian Su, and asked him if he would see me that day. He agreed and it turned out my disc had fully herniated and I needed surgery right away. I so appreciate the time she took to help me, it was above and beyond. The surgery went very well and after 4 months of suffering I am completely pain-free. Dr. Winfield and her staff are wonderful caring people and I would highly recommend her to anyone suffering from back issues. Let me start by saying that I am at all deferential toward doctors (my dad was an orthopedic surgeon) and I am not overly confident in Western medicine in general. Yet, after research, I decided to see Dr. Wingfield about my various issues (shoulder, hip, knee). I also should add that I drive 2 hours one way to see her. I am not disappointed at all. She has taken time to understand my concerns. She has been creative yet conservative in her approach. Most surgeons have surgery as the null hypothesis, this is not the case with Dr. Wingfield. She has helped me with my issues and understands the difference in treatment for athletes. This is SUPER important in my experience. I'd also add that she gives the most painless injections ever, and I've had a ton! Wait times are generally good, but I did have one visit that had an excessive wait. Lastly, she was very, very kind in helping me with a working with me on an insurance issue and misunderstanding. This was not something she had to do, but was kind enough to do so. This might be my first 5 star rating on Yelp ever. read more

My husband and I, along with many friends and fellow athletes/swimmers have gone to Dr. Wingfield on numerous occasions over the past ten years. She is terrific: totally tuned into the body, an excellent listener, a keen observer with patience to spare and a proactive practitioner who gives techniques, exercises and workarounds to heal an injury or strengthen a simple pulled muscle. My swim coach originally referred me to Dr. Wingfield and I haven't seen any other sports medicine doctor since. If you need further specialized treatment, she refers you to outside sources. She requests follow up appointments to make certain you are on the right track and....her office, apart from being comfortable and convenient, runs on time! I've never waited more than a few minutes--in my book, a real plus. She is a great medical resource---I recommend her unreservedly. read more

I have been to two other doctors for my elbow tendinitis and she was the first one to explain what it causing it as well as my options. She advised me how to take care of my elbow and forearm to avoid further inflammation and recommended exercises and acupuncture. I am a massage therapist who frequently sees people with injuries. I cannot comment on how helpful Dr. Wingfield is, but I want to mention that even though she takes insurance, there is a facilities fee tacked onto her services since she is affiliated with St. Francis. On top of my normal copay, I would have to pay an additional $100 or so just to see this doctor at her Corte Madera office even though I have a very good PPO insurance plan. The raves reviews may make it possibly worth this additional cost, but I wanted to alert others to this possible fee that isn't always mentioned when you book your initial appointment. read more

I made a 30 min appointment and was told that only maximum of 2 problems will be addressed. So you will have to make another appointment if you have to talk about other concerns. I haven't been to many specialists so I am not sure if this is common occurrence because of the insurance insisting on seeing patients for less time. Overall, I left rushed through the appointment. But i really like the fact that her treatment methods are conservative. I have a sprained elbow and knee pain. She prescribed exercise and good shoes for the knees and stretching and rest for the elbow. She was to the point and concise. read more

She was the consummate professional: her assessments were thorough, her explanations clear and her bedside manner second to none. One of her most valuable assets is her professional history as a high level athlete. Having "been there, done that" she truly understands one's desire to heal in the most expedient way possible. She made the early recommendation that I forgo surgery and instead heal through an extensive process of physical therapy that I embraced. Over the years because my two children are top performing athletes and dancers we have seen Dr. Wingfield dozens of times. As a former Cirque Du Soleil performer, and top level (almost Olympic) gymnast herself, she is not the kind of doctor to suggest you give up your sport/dance just because you have had an injury or series of injuries. Her first question is always, "when's your next game/dance competition". She tries to get you back into your sport/dance as soon as possible, yet she is very prudent to not let you go back too soon. As others have said she will take all the time with you that you need, not rushing through your appointments. She explains exactly what her diagnostic thinking is and is very detailed in explaining the treatment. She has gotten my kids back to their sports/dance after various stress fractures in toes, legs, feet, sprained ankles--you name it. And, she is a delightful, interesting person on top of all that too! I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone. She is a huge reason we don't just join Kaiser. My kids owe so much of their athletic and dance success at a top level to her. read more
