I came to Upper Cervical as a total mess. A difficult time walking or standing up straight. My neck had soreness that I hadn't experienced before. Two herniated discs in my back didn't help. I've been coming to Dr. Ian for a long time! I don't realize how much chiropractic helps until I stop doing it. The main reason for this review, though, is the Softwave device, which has been very helpful for my knee. Most chiropractic offices have Shockwave, which I've found is too aggressive and doesn't give me the same immediate pain relief like Softwave does. This review is long overdue, but to be fair, I've been wrangling a 6 month old wild child. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Ian. Per my OB's recommendation, I started seeing him while I was in my third trimester for terrible hip & sciatic pain which deeply impacted my ability to sleep. He also performed the Webster technique in an attempt to help encourage my breech baby to flip. And speaking of babies, I am the biggest one. Turns out, the consultation is nothing more than a screening appointment for the actual consultation, which is $300, but it took quite a bit of effort to get that out of the young lady at the front desk. It's too cool for school. I pointed out that the sign clearly implied free 20 minute conversation with a professional which they just dismissed. That tells me they know they're being smarmy, and not completely honest. I thank Dr. John Christman for another very helpful session. I have been seeing him for a number of months because of soreness in my neck, black, and hip due to a near fall on a poor trail. On this last visit, Dr. John finally got my back release some tightness and move into alignment. There was a big WHOOSH! as air released from my right lung. I have been seeing Dr. Ian since February and I can honestly say, he may have saved my life! You see, I had been suffering with rib, neck and back pain. Living in the U.S. you get so used that everything is open all the time: around-the clock grocery shopping or instant 24-hour food and grocery deliveries. In fact, I have gotten so used to this on-demand culture that when my friend had a really bad back-ache and could hardly move, it was a no-brainer for me to call the nearby chiropractors to schedule an appointment for...obviously immediately! Well, turns out it was a Friday evening at 4:45pm before a long holiday weekend. I ended up calling various clinics in Mill Valley, but none of them were able to accommodate my hurting friend...none except the folks at Upper Cervical: when I called them, the receptionist grasped the urgency in my voice and had a chat with the doctor. After a quick over-the-phone consultation, the latter determined that it would be best for his other colleague, Dr Paul, to see my friend, as he specializes in the lower back area. Dr Paul, turns out, had already left for the weekend though but would come back in to see my friend. So, about 45 minutes later four of us showed up in the practice: one patient and three support folks. Dr Paul was already there and after the usual paperwork, he took our friend into the exam room while the the rest of us went across the street to have dinner at Super Duper. About 45-50 minutes later we saw our friend walking towards us...his posture had already improved and he was no longer walking with a hunched back. He even had a faint smile on his face...that's when I knew he'd be alright! All in all, my friend recovered to his old self again over the next few days. I have been driving by this place for years and always admired the succulents in front. One day I after meeting Dr. John and talking to him about what kind of chiropractic care he does I decided to give it a try. I have had neck issues since a car accident at age 17 (I am over 40 now) and usually stay away from chiro because of the bulging disc in my neck. My PT told me if I wanted to fix it I would need surgery. I was also told to quit my job (as a hair dresser) because it would make things worse. My neck pain gave me headaches daily and I would often walk around with ice and Motrin. I couldn't carry groceries or even lift my blow dryer with out being in pain. Honestly didn't have much hope for being pain free but I knew I didn't want the surgery. After being under Dr. John's care for about 2 months I am happy to say I no longer have neck pain and the range of motion in my shoulders is slowly increasing. WARNING! DO NOT ALLOW JOHN CHRISTMAN TO "TREAT" YOU. I visited John Christman for serious neck pain last June. I had never been to a chiropractor before, and I was in a tremendous amount of pain. I want to warn anyone away from using John Christman for treatment. He took x-rays. While reviewing them with me, he said, "we may be able to do some work, but you may need to see someone else in the long-term." Which, I realize now, meant that he knew I had structural and nerve issues, but he proceeded anyway - he injured me further AND took my money (two separate appointments). I had no idea what his barbaric methods would be. Before he "treated" me, he asked, "You've never been to a chiropractor before? Have you looked at YouTube videos of chiropractors?" I had not. I just needed relief from the pain. He didn't give me any idea of how he "treats" injuries, and he didn't describe the immense force that he uses. I had no idea what I was in for, and he didn't give me any information to help me make an informed decision. I did not give him my informed consent. He put my head on a bench and told me to take a deep breath. In a second, he smashed his hands down on my head and neck, causing me such excruciating pain that I shouted obscenities at the top of my lungs. I immediately started crying. The pain worsened in the following hours and days. I couldn't move my neck at all, and I ended up in the ER the following day. I had to have a major corticoid-steroid injections in my neck (under anesthesia because the pain was so great) to address the further damage that he caused. And he knew it - all of this he saw in the X-ray. In fact, he sent me an apologetic email the following day - recommending other chiropractors that might be a better "fit" for me. This a**hole knew he injured me. I have $15000 in out of pocket medical bills. I asked him (politely) to cover those costs. He refused to pay any of it - in fact, he didn't even refund the fees that I paid him. Please do not seek medical care from this practice. Sure, the place looks nice on the outside, but John Christman is a barbaric hack who should be avoided at all costs. P.S. Don't be fooled by all of the positive Yelp reviews. I received amazing care from Dr. Paul Ofili. He left due to a variety of reasons. I did not wish to continue care there as the staff is not diverse (Dr. Ofili was the only person of color in the office) and much of my physical challenges are linked to the traumas of being a woman of color. I had purchased a package and was told if I did not continue in care there with another chiropractor (two white men), I would be charged the full price for all my previous visits and that cut my refund in half. This was the second package I had purchased and I felt I deserved better given their lack of commitment to or understanding of representing a diverse client base. My attempts to negotiate were met with a completely unacceptable solution so I am accepting my loss of funds and never recommending them to people of color or others who care about changing this world where privilege has the last word. read more

Dr. Paul is absolutely amazing. I hurt my shoulder and arm using kettle bells. I waited 8 months, saw a doctor and did physical therapy all without any improvement. With one visit to Dr. Paul I was 90% better. I followed his recommendations and saw him regularly and my shoulder is 100% cured. I can't believe it. I even completed a 65 foot climbing wall (at age 64) and before Dr. Paul's care it would have been impossible. I went back to regular Zumba and have felt back strain for a few weeks. I don't think I have anything to add to all the positive things that have been written about this place. The ambience soft and healing, the docs competent and all around good guys. My comment is about how this is really deep, subtle work. They are only adjusting one vertebrate at the top of the spine. Its subtle and can take while to adjust to the adjustment. If you adjust. I did not or at least well. It brought up lots of hard stuff which is too involved to go into here. I was not physically injured just overwhelmed. What I want to say is listen to your own body if its the right modality for you. The staff was supportive when I made this decision to not continue and that right there is a plus. read more

Dr. Ian explains everything in detail and compassionately - then does what needs to be done swiftly and expertly - it is a vulnerable position letting someone touch a body that has been in pain for a long time but I have full trust in Dr. Ian. Initially, I didn't go to see Dr. Ian for my health, I simply went in to feel better in my body. Yet, my immune system seems to be benefiting more than I ever could have anticipated or dreamed. The birth of my son was difficult and he was in the canal for a very long time. I always had the thought to look into having him adjusted but life just kept whizzing by and the next thing I knew he was 8. The thought to bring him to someone for an adjustment never left. As he got older, he was having difficulty falling asleep at night and it was becoming more and more challenging. What once took 10-15 minutes was taking 20-30 or longer at times. Dr. Tremayne is pretty great! I took my daughter to see him because she was having problems with her neck. She was 7 weeks old when I noticed that she always tilted her head to one side and she also had a hard time nursing on the opposite side. She also seemed as if she was frustrated or in pain. He adjusted her about 5 times and prescribed some stretches to do with her, her neck straightened out fairly soon after. He is very sweet, very knowledge and excellent with adults and children. Don't just go for neck pain though, he can help you with anything from your immune system to your nervous system, etc read more
