Just did the unthinkable. For the first time since the 80s, I no longer have 98 Rock (or its previous names & call letters) programmed on my car stereo. Since their heyday, they've had their ups and downs with changes in music and on-air personalities, but they always had something to keep me listening. No longer. The stale playlist has sucked for a long time, non-existant promotions, and now that Pat Martin and TDS are gone, I've moved on. Audacy screwed the pooch, not just in Sacramento, but looks like every station across the country. Just take a look at their stock price and it's clear they're on life support. The talk show is deliberately becoming more and more machinistic and distasteful for women listeners. Dawn is a joke in the eyes of Rob and the other indirect machinists that accompany Rob. I am tired of listening to Dawn being put down or laughed at. She is already trying so hard to be likeable by submitting to this behavior and making quick dumb irrelevant jokes for seconds at a time, in hopes more people will think she's funny. Then rob and everybody just ignores her, like she never even talked. I also hate listening to rob talk, he is so full of himself and ignorant that it reflects heavily in his unreasonable perception that he tries to push on listeners. Correct me if im wrong, but there seems to be a new women on the show (not sure if it was a one time kind thing) and she was also made to look dumb while the men laugh at her and put her down, but only after she is ignored for talking... The music is not even rock, its the playist from a disgruntled teenager from 2005. I find myself listening to this radio station a few times a day while on the road. I like the hard rock this station plays. Besides some of the classics, they play metal, acid, alternative, and bunch of other heavy sounding categories that I can't think of right now. Nice change of pace when I find myself in a deeper, head banging mood. It seems to give me an extra boost for the day. Sometimes in the mornings, I end up listening to the "Rob, Arnie & Dawn Show". The subject matter is not aways to my taste or interest, but for some reason, I have to hear what's being said. From controversial, to funny, to right on the money. More like 98 Classic Rock. It sucks to have the only rock station in Sacramento and it plays crappy music. A lot of talk by uniformed DJs and when they do play music, it sucks. They have a set list which repeats every week in shuffle mode. You only hear a new rock song of the current year once every two weeks and the DJs hate to play modern music. They mostly play songs from 60's through 80's and artists also includes, Eminem, Sublime, Bob Marley. Morning show does half decent job of entertainment and afternoon show tries really hard not to suck. read more

Awful now. I have listened to them off and on since 1995 when they were 93.7 and just removed them from my presets in my car. I give up on them... I scroll through the stations on my presets and not even 5% of the time are they even playing actual music. Somehow they are always on commercial breaks or the hosts are talking about stupid stuff. This isn't talk radio, it's radio. Play music, be quiet, and do what commercials you have to, maybe with an hour of talk in the morning instead of intermittently all day long. Like people have been saying, there's a difference between free speech and hate speech. This was pushing it too far. I've been gay bashed and left for dead twice in my life. Once in Sacramento, and one in Reno. I'm happily married, to a woman, and don't act gay at all. Even my gay friends say there's no hint on their gaydar. I do live on the edge of Sacramento's gay district in midtown. In Reno, I was attacked by a large group of men. I had to have surgery to remove a badly broken bone. That's remove, not repair, because of the damage. The police showed and made fun of me since if I got a beating, I had to be gay. The paramedics got the police to stop making jokes while they worked on my eye. Witnesses told the police the name of the leader of the group who did it. The police told me, "You can file a report if you want, but we're not going to investigate it". I was also left for dead in a gay bashing in Sacramento. Four hematomas (blood clots in the brain), and spent 4 days in ICU while the doctors thought I'd die or be a permanent vegetable. The head trauma left me with epilepsy. At least the Sacramento police were more professional. People that encourage this sort of behavior have a problem. It's not a joke. Being beaten to death isn't much of a difference from a lynching. It's just reinforcing the ignorant belief of "well, they had it coming". I've been sending emails to the advertisers of this station to get them to stop supporting this. I don't think people think about the reinforcement power of words. It's a screwy world we live in, so why make it worse? read more

Lighten up. I literally don't agree with 80% of what Rob says, I can't take Arnie seriously, and pylon is just annoying... but I get it, whether or not I agree with any of their opinions. For some reason, this station reminds me of Carl's Jr., monster trucks, weight lifting supplements, and Jnco jeans. The morning guys are pure trash and I don't listen to them at all. But the rest of the station is not all that bad. Joe Maumee is a great DJ (the station's saving grace, IMO), and Dogface is pretty good too, although sometimes it seems like the two are competing over who has the scratchiest voice. The music is 70% butt, except for their local music programs and the occasional old school songs and weekend themes. A few years ago they had a weekend called "Zeptallica" in which they played only Zeppelin and Metallica songs, rotating between the two. Awesome. And their weekend Flux Capacitor show is pretty great too. Too bad this is this city's only rock station. read more

Let me start this by letting everyone know I have been listening to 98 Rock for years. I use to love this channel to death, but in the last 2 years this channel has plunged right into the toilet. How? some of you might ask, well for starters they talk about 97% of the time and only play a song here and there. Every Sunday is "Flux Capacitor" which wouldn't be bad if we didn't already have a classic rock station for that. Plus EVERY morning for the week days we have 4-hours of a terrible "talk show" that has no place on a Rock station. Now I wouldn't care as much if there were other options for grunge and modern rock but sadly there isn't. I don't understand why these "DJs" think we just want to hear them blab on and on and on. If I wanted to listen to someone talk on the radio, I would be listening to something 100x better such as Howard Stern! The fact is when this channel actually plays music like it's supposed to, it's an epic channel. But sadly it's plagued by people that think they're stupid stories and news is more important than playing actual music. I'll end this with saying that the female DJ that is barely on is fantastic. She shuts up and actually plays music. Hopefully they'll wake up and improve this channel but sadly I very much doubt it'll ever happen. read more

The morning show is really the only good thing they have going, I do occasionally listen to the dog pound but that is only because they brought on Arnie. The biggest complaint I have is the terrible music lineup they play awful "Rock" music so it is hard to stay tuned in after 10am. I feel required to give this station 5 stars for an argument I had concerning the "transgenders" comments made a while ago by Rob and Arnie. I don't agree with the comments at all. However, a Sacramento State professor really didn't agree with the comments. This professor promised to lecture his students about the harmful effects that Rob and Arnie's comments would have. The professor was going to tell his student's to essentially protest and boycott the station. . . . Good job professor. Way to keep your opinions out of the classroom. Your job is to regurgitate theories found in books, not preach opinions in your head. So, five stars for 98 Rock. Maybe it's more a reflection of the current state of rock music, but what seems to pass for "hard rock" these days, if the playlist of 98 Rock is any indication, is quite sad. Ok... so they play the same 20 songs over and over ad nauseum just like any other just like any other alternative rock station with the same, banal idiotic DJ banter. Blah. No different then anybody else. I listen to this station fairly frequently, since it's one of the 3 or 4 local stations that play alternative rock,, I'm a fan of that genre, and I'm a bit self-masochistic. This station is so similar to any one of the others that I can't for the life of me remember if Pat Martin, Craig the Dog-Faced Boy or Reuben or whomever is a DJ on this particular station. They sound indistinguishable from KROQ or a couple of other local stations. It's as if they've morphed into one giant station with three or four robotic clones at a few cubicles, all punching the same buttons and speaking in the same high energy, and sometimes raspy voices. Yippie. The one area that lets this station distinguish itself from the others is it's morning show, in that they have a local one (but not necessarily a "good" one). No other alternative rock station has a local radio show, and there's only a very few across the city. Unfortunately, their morning show only reminds me of just how bad morning radio shows typically are, and (conversely) how difficult it is to put on a high-quality morning radio show. Ok... Arnie is the only one on there who's consistently funny and fun to listen to. Rob is supremely pompous, self-righteous to the point of being downright obnoxious, and Dawn is so brutally annoying in so many ways that I do not have the time or energy to even begin to delve into why I can't stand to listen to her. The question that you must be asking yourself now is "Well, it's obvious that you're very familiar with the show and that you listen to the show a whole lot. So why do you listen so often if these guys are so terrible?" It's simple. All the other guys are even worse. The Rob, Arnie and Dawn show just reinforces my contentions that morning radio is generally abysmally bad. Actually, these guys are the 2nd best in town. The best, in my humble opinion, is The Adam Carolla show. I typically only listen to Rob, Arnie and Dawn during the commercial breaks on the Adam Carolla show, and constantly flip over to the Adam Carolla show hoping that they get back on the air soon. However, sometimes I can't even stand Rob Arnie and Dawn, and find myself listening to the lonely radio wasteland that is NPR news. This station is terrible! Let me start with a breakdown of how the day of listening to the station goes... Morning: Starts off with a god awful talk show Rob, Anyone, and Dawn. This is quite possibly the worst talk show that I've ever heard. Rob is a conceited A$$hole that always talks about how great he is and his rolex watches and the mansion he lives in. They even go as far as to call the listeners "Maggots". They claim to not take sides for the politics they talk about but always endorse Trump and make fun of liberals and call them "Snowflakes". I think the thing that I hate the most about this show is that it's literally just a paid advertising for whatever brand or company their getting money from at the time, seems like every time I switch to the channel in the morning they're having a full discussion about how great "their" Tahoe Blue Vodka is, or some heating and air company, or a pool cleaning company, or a dog kennel, or Kia. Again it's literally just one long commercial. Also Rob, if you ever read this you're only the number one talk show because you're the only thing on in the morning so pull your head out of your a$$. If there was another rock station in the morning that played new rock you guys would fail so hard, but it seems like its cheaper for the company to pay some sh!t talk show then to just play music.. Afternoon: The afternoon radio isn't that bad considering it's the only time they actually play music. If you call in don't expect them to play your request, they play whatever's the cheapest song to play. They also play a bunch of garbage that doesn't even come close to rock. This is my "go to" radio station for my morning drive to work as well as one that I listen to most of the time on my way home or while driving around town. In the morning from 6-10am is the "Rob, Arnie and Dawn" show which is arguably the best morning radio show in all of Sacramento. I don't know how I ever woke up in the morning before I moved to Sacramento! They have interesting and relevant topics and funny segments like "Beat Arnie", "Bad News Over Happy Music", and "Ghetto, White Trash or Other". Sure they are controversial with some of their topic choices and what they say, but isn't that true with anything worth listing to? Sometimes their conversations drag on for too long and they play a lot of reruns, but I still find myself listening every morning for my whole commute. In the afternoons/evenings is the "Dog and Joe" show which can be funny and is still a little controversial but not as much so as RAD. They play music during their show in between conversations and their conversations don't last too long or drag on and they are usually quite funny! In the late night is "Cristy" whose show I don't get to listen to very often because I like going to bed early. She used to work for the RAD show but now does her own thing. It's just her and she plays mostly music, but will bring up something funny or amusing in between songs. At any other time KRXQ plays classic rock, rock, alternative and the like and is a solid choice if in the area. read more

I lived in the Ballsac area for 4 years(bleck), so waking up every morning to RAD's banter and crude humor and frequent Sacramento bashings always got my day off to a good start. I don't go to their website much anymore to stream or listen to the audio files, but man were they rockin'. The music is eh. I love rock 'n' roll and harder bands such as Disturbed, Rob Zombie, etc. but hearing crap from Hinder or Three Days Grace...nah. That song "Pain" is one of the funniest songs I've ever heard because it's like they're trying to produce something good but they're failing epically. Go watch the music video. It's hilarious and reeks of suckiness. The DJs were pretty cool. Personally I liked it when they talked about politics and crap. Sometimes they tended to talk a tad too long, but whatever. I think the show has improved since Arnie has left. He didn't really bring anything new over the last year or two and talked less than the other two so it wasn't much of a miss. Most of his talking was done on his Arnie games and honestly, they too were getting tired. You could tell his heart wasn't in it for a while. He also doesn't add much to the show he joined on the few instances I heard it. Probably too many cooks in the kitchen on that one. Rob might seem an ass but he has too many valid points to ignore. Dawn goes off on wild tangents and sometimes you just want to reach through the radio and bring some sense back into her but otherwise she's fine. A replacement for Arnie would be the best course but its hard to find someone good that wont outshine Rob and his ego. Either way, I'll keep listening. I wish it was possible to give 0 stars for this piss-poor radio station! They have a half-way decent morning show, but it can be VERY annoying at times. The mid-day music is just horrible! They claim to play "new rock, but this is just a joke. The DJ Pat Martin has been a DJ for a long time, and you can tell his musical "base" is stuck in the 70's - 90's. You will hear non-stop music over 30 years old, i.e. Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/DC ect...which wouldn't be bad, if they didn't play the same songs over and over. Expect NO new rock/metal music from this station....unless you like NIckleback. Expect to hear alot of crap like Nirvana, Green day...... There aren't a lot of radio stations in Sacramento which play music that I like. 98 rock plays my music but I refuse to listen to them anymore simply because any of the DJ's they have are so full of themselves I end up screaming at the radio. One of their DJ's mentioned something about the Iraqi war, and being an Iraqi war vet I called in to set the record straight. The guy I spoke with told me how he didn't care to hear me "whine" halfway through my second sentence then hung up on me. I suppose it shouldn't surprise me much that after reading his profile on the 98 rock web site that the guy only has a 7th grade education. Five stars, overwhelmingly for the Dog Pound. Starting in February 2015, this has been my commute home radio station of choice. The morning show, RAD Radio, can be hit-or-miss. I enjoyed Andy on the Dog Pound and his disappearance without any comment is weird but what can you do? I usually don't listen to radio personalities but like I've said, the pound is great.
