Just started listening to KSCU, and am really enjoying the playlist on Sat evenings (5 pm - the Beehive). Good work. Go, Broncos.

I only visit Santa Cruz twice a year, max, but I've actually listened to KZSC 88.1 more on my…read moredrives down the 101 near the towns of Gonzales and Soledad than I have when driving around Monterey Bay. Normally at that point of the drive, it's early afternoon on Saturday or Sunday, so I often hear the same DJs or at least the same shows that have been hosted by different DJs--college students, I assume. The music can be good, bad, or totally random, especially how the songs are juxtaposed. That's the beauty of true college radio, and I don't begrudge them their poor taste or lack of knowledge of seminal bands from the '80s and '90s--and yes, I know that they were born in the 2000s, but I was born in the late '70s and I still knew from a young age who Elvis, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and many of the Motown artists were. What does bother me about this station--and something ugly about true college radio--is how much dead air there is. It's not just too much time between songs or occasionally hearing hot-mic incidents; it's a more regular thing, and I've heard the same DJs apologize for the same issue over and over. Again, I get it that these are (mostly) college kids who are learning a skill, but they should be better, which leads me to believe there's very little to no engineering help for the DJs. There's also too much advertising, but I can't single KZSC out for that, and some of the hyper-local ads are funny. I'm glad it's my audio companion for at least part of my regular trips to SoCal, but it could be better. And they need more shows devoted to music.

KZSC is always there for me. A student run radio program…read morethat covers all grounds. From "for fun" segments like tarot card and star sign readings to organized playlists by the students that branch into new genres and subcategories of music per student hosting, the fun never stops. I used to be a DJ here from 1996 to 1998 and it was a great experience and still is a great station…read moreto listen to because of all the diverse music formats and shows the station had to offer featuring under represented music not found on commercial radio where I came across a lot of excellent music from a punk metal hard perspective as well as opened up my mind to other genres including jazz up to walking away with a production piece keepsake of my own. KSJS is a gateway and experience for those wanting to learn about broadcasting etc. and a great way to meet and work with good people. My passion was more audio over video and left with the basics of digital audio editing that can now be done with simple software on a home computer. For those at KSJS and however you are involved in the station enjoy your time there and get the most out of it. For those listening be open minded and stop judging the occasional belch because I got away with a lot more on A 2 to 6 am shift which would never have been possible on commercial radio and probably said at least one thing in the early am during a traffic report that probably was not ideal but not offensive. It was a wild time for me back in day meeting drunken rhythm Jazz and blues artists and being in close quarters with them laying down legal ids and liners from then station one of which was featured on a sports weekly segment because it was off the wall funny. Those days I do miss and wish I would have stayed involved longer but the real world called me in 1998 and I started my next chapter. Highly recommend the experience to SJSU students regardless of their major and to judgmental listeners, cut the station a break as you might not find this style of college radio or freedom anywhere else. Tune in online and phone in your requests and if it meshes with the DJs show the you might find it honored in 15 minutes or less as the technology is more instantaneous depending on your request. I wish KSJS well now and in the future with many years of longevity to come and yes it will change with history. Wild times in the 20th century and wild times today and KSJS covers it all. Support your local college radio station out there in San Jose. Peace out.

Should KFOX expand their music library to include 90's? Of course!, this is by definition classic rock. And though I hate to admit it, someday bands like Linkin Park will be included. This is age and happens. I can roll with it. Some of my favorite bands were from the 90's so I'm a little biased. The DJs are always great! CJ and his knowledge of Classic Rock, what with his mystery riffs etc, just adds color and familiarity. He experienced the rock scene personally so he is a plus in my book. The new morning guy (at this writing) is Joey, and a fast talker, smooth at the mic and seems to like his audience, talks to them all the time. KFOX and 107.7 The Bone are the go-to rock stations. I hold KFOX a little higher because it is classier. The bone is for more juvenile ears (of which I have often). As long as they keep rockin me baby, I'm a big fan and will remain so. If they could get Greg Kihn back, that would be the cherry.

But you almost always put a smile on my face. I'm sorry to say that while you are first on my presets, you are usually the last to come to mind during my morning drive. In the political vein that we are in these days, the Bone is my Republican friend, KFOG is my Democratic associate, and you are the middle of the road buddy. This morning the BONE guys were rambling on about having their large, overweight intern do lap dances for other men in a thong (an American Idol controversy thing). Sorry guys, you are boring me. So I went to KFOG, but the music they were playing just didn't keep me interested. So I switched to KFOX and was greeted with Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" followed by "Sweet Emotion" and then "You Shook Me" (two of my favorite songs from Aerosmith and AC/DC respectively). That woke me back up for the rest of my drive. Greg Kihn may ramble on at times, but he can sure pull in some great guests from the rock world ("My love's in jeopardy, baby. Oooo-a-ooo-ooo."). He may be a has been in the rock world, and he talks to much in the morning. Probably the main reason I don't listen to them too much. Side note, his son Ry is a wiz on the guitar. But when the Sharks are playing, that's a different story. That alone gets KFOX a few stars. Only station in the area that carries the games. Just wish I got them better up in the East Bay, 98.5 out of Sacramento tends to interfere.
