This really pains me, but i have to write an honest review. KSCU is just not a very good station for one main reason: there arent enough deejays that work there. Thus, more times than not, there is a compilation playing rather than a real live person spinning music. Sometimes there will even be just dead air. Yes i could write about the glory days of KSCU and how it used to be an amazing college radio station, but then the review would be pointless. Yelping, to me at least, is about NOW. They do still co-sponsor midnight movies at the camera cinemas, and I give them a star for that. the other star is for the few deejays they do have. But i have to go back to this: with the same comps. playing the same songs over and over again, kscu is just really hard to listen to. someday they might get back to their old ways, but until they do, 2 stars it is. read more

KSCU 103.3 FM - inside the station - Radio Stations Near Me - Santa Clara, California

As a former DJ & music director, KSCU to me is like the bad boyfriend you keep going back to. We always had this co-dependent relationship. KSCU has provided me with so many great memories and access to an amazing selection of music. And it also provided me with plenty of headaches. But no matter what, you will always have a special place in your heart for it [him]. But as a listener to KSCU, and all headaches aside, like any true fan of your favorite sports team, you stick by it [KSCU] through the good and the bad. I guess I kinda liken KSCU to... , the Warriors. Not the last year and half version of the Warriors with all of their bandwagon fans, but the Warriors that have sucked balls for the previous handfuls of years. Admittedly I dropped the Warriors when NBA went on strike years ago--hard to put up with whiny sports players who make ridiculous amounts of money. Anyway, KSCU has had some pretty great years previously, and sure the station is kinda at a low-point, but its way more accessible than abstract KFJC garbage (minus a handful of shows) & KSJS's over-programmed format. KSCU still offers some great programming (when live DJs are on, yes) as mentioned by other Yelpers. And its the easiest underground station to get involved with. So support it, yo! read more

The Best! My favorite station to listen to while at home in the bay. Eclectic to say the least, every hour is different as a each DJ puts together their own blend of music. They literally play whatever they want. One of my favorite memories is when I was driving around the hills of Fremont and KSCU was playing the entire soundtrack to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Suggestions: I liked it better when the website displayed the DJ set information as a grid, rather than listed by days. Someone needs to fill the shoes left by MikeTeeVee, by far one of my favorites at KSCU, and I love the guy who reads the PSAs doing his best Carl impression from Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Also, I wish their signal was a little stronger. read more

So KSCU is my all time favorite radio station. Its what I grew up on and it keeps mining amazing new music. When it comes down to it random kids from Cali suburbs can program a much better radio show than 40 year olds working for clear channel trying to hype the money makers. Plus shouts to Faco, long timer and the best radio DJ around! Im kind of shocked one of the commercial stations around hasnt picked him up yet. Straight up entertainment. As mentioned before, it has its ups and downs, dead air and broadcasting snafus. Sometimes the DJs just arent playing good music- but they dont tend to stick with it. So its totally hit or miss. Still, punch the button and 50/50 you are going to hear something new and incredible. read more

obviously KSCU has its ups and downs. the last few years seem to have been definite downs. However, I still love some of the regulars. the guys on the tv soundtract morning show on friday always crack me up, I love how excited they get about everything. I also have a crush on that one dj who plays hardcore metal's voice. I dont dig the music, but theres something weird about his voice that draws me. the biggest downer about this station is dead air, and cds on repeat. one good thing about them is that you dont have to be a student to dj, so you get a lot of variety. but you also get a lot of flakes, since they aren't doing this as a major or for units. I rarely listen anymore, mainly cause the reception sucks where I live. but I still have great memories. read more

KSCU is free form radio with lots of creative programming. This was the place I created my vision of synth pop radio with "One Vortex Beyond" 2000-2007. Some of the best times in my life. Original Bad Review removed along with the foot in my mouth.... --------UPDATE 7/18 I was recently called out on this review by a good friend. And after several points were made and i digested them I had to update this review. There are several reasons I have added two stars. But here's the general rundown.. One goes to the fact that this station is local and volunteer based and has been running this way for many years. The programming issues I highlighted are usually when staff is low. And as a non profit radio DJ myself, I empathize. But I guess that's why initially I hated. Regardless, there is another much more signifigcant star to explain.. Star no. 2 is because they constantly support local music. I used to listen to Sweet Lou in the early nineties and as a young HH head he was inspiring and sharp. He would have mc battles over the air, yo mama joke/ snap competitions, and invite us to come down to the station to hang out, rap, or answer the phones. He may not be there these days, but the radio community needs a station that exudes this type of grassroots appreciation for it's listeners and the entire radio community. So when they get to fundraising, help out. read more

I found this station randomly while flipping stations. They were playing indie rock! I was super excited because I can't really find radio stations that play that stuff. If you know any (I live in the south bay), tell me! The music is the best for me on my way to work. They play underground 80s rock and sometimes underground hip-hop. On the way home, don't care much for that playlist. When do they play all the indie rock?? Some of the DJs say "uhhh" and "ummm" too much. I know they're not professionals, but it's annoying enough where I have to change the station. I think they should play background music when intro-ing songs...otherwise it's way too dry. read more

I often listen as I drive along 237 - the whole 237 corridor is a sweet spot for reception, so if you're in the area tune in to 103.3. This morning the theme seemed to be "Music that kind of sounds like The Ramones or The Replacements" and it made me smile. I was thinking, "I gotta Yelp about this when I get in to the office". A couple other mornings I found treacly oldies, which would be annoying if not for the fun vibe of "Your cholo spinnin' the oldies!" He's a hoot. Late one Friday I found such awesome darkwave-electrogoth that I stayed in the car when I got home to finish the song. No commercials, so you don't have to change the station until you run out of their broadcast range. read more

I love this station, it keeps me sane while driving and they're really good about keeping up with new music, putting on events and supporting the local music scene. I would have given it 5 stars if they didn't put on comps because DJs didn't show up fr their time slot, which seems to happen more than I'd like to. I have every comp memorized with what song is coming next. Shouts out to Big Al and Red, DJ Rion, The Power Pop Show, Faco, Video Drome, The Delirium Show and Driver. Word'em up!! read more

Was in town from Atlanta for an event. Listened to this radio station pretty much all day every day. Great mix of music you don't hear very often. Indie I suppose. Reminded me a lot of Atlanta's 97.9 OrganicX on Sunday mornings. Wish there were more of this out there! read more

I don't really get this station... I'll tune in sometimes and find some really unexpected, amazing stuff (Yelle's "ACDG"?! Friendly Fires?!?!) and other times it's utter garbage. The people speaking on air are also really boring... such a shame. read more

Ive been on this show a few times not only to do a live performance but promoting my old bands gigs and cd's. Its a cool mellow vibe and helps out with local music. I don't listen to KSCU that much anymore but when I do I'm likely to hear some new band or an older track that you dont hear that often. read more

IMO, SCU's best gift to the Bay. I went there, so don't give me crap.

My gripes are similar to that of fellow yelper Justin M. so I won't bother you with the specifics. Basically with the lack of DJs, KSCU turned into comp (as in prerecorded "compilation mix" AKA a mixtape) central. You will not go throughout your listening day without hearing one of these. How do I know this? Because I hear the same songs every hour or so when I decide to myself, "Hey, the CD player in my car has been broken for years and I'm sick of listening to hyphy on commercial urban radio. Let's see what's on college radio." And to my dismay, I hear a comp. Yay. Unlike J-Mo's review, my rating is a star higher because of what the station was, the quality shows and radio personalities it has right now, as well as what it will always be-- non-fuckin' commercial radio! In its glory days, the station had shows from morning to night, ranging from all musical genres. Just like the previous stated reviewers, one would win many tickets to shows and I would set my tape deck on record cause I was a teenager and ballin' on a weekly allowance from the parental units since I couldn't afford to buy lots of music. Today, the lineup of shows for a day isn't as stacked as it used to be, but the shows they have right now still has my brainwaves tuned in. Fellow Yelper Mark R. listed some of the best shows, but there are a few more like Out of Sorts with Vision for your fix iof downtempo electronica, and the movie review shows like Videodrome with Mr. Salamander and Hank, and the Movie Hop with Faco and Francis Fratelli. As for radio personalities are concerned-- all you have to know is Faco Faco Faco Faco Faco! He's like the Mister Senor Love Daddy of KSCU-- he's always on, always funny and always entertaining. Hopefully, KSCU will try to retrieve what it was. Maybe times are changing and the youngsters are too self-involved in their blogs and iPods, I dunno-- but, for now, I'll just deal with what they have, which is few and far between the music comps. read more

I *love* this radio station! I feel I need to respond to the two-star rating left by MsTiza a. This is a college radio station and they have new DJs coming in every quarter or semester. They often play pre-recorded shows over and over because they are either training a new DJ, or a student/DJ has left the school and left a gap in the programming. It's not easy to program a student run radio station for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This station doesn't play commercials, and they don't play commercial ~music~! The shows are diverse and the music is great! I love Mr. PowerPop and Francis Fratelli and the Movie Hop. Sure, you have to sit through monotone PSAs and 19 yr olds who haven't honed their radio voice, but the music isn't the same-ole crap you have to suffer through on ClearChannel radio stations.
