If you tune in at different times you can hear a wide range of musical selections and/or talk. This station has withstood the test of time. KUCI is more than a radio station for me. It's college memories, friendships, and, of course, all the music. After taking the KUCI training course, I became a DJ. I applied for my own show and it ran for a couple of quarters at the station. I loved my time there. I made amazing friends that I still keep in touch with today and made amazing memories. I really love music so this was a great way to share music I loved and learn about music other people love. KUCI is great for students and community members to get involved in radio and learn about how radio works and even host a show. It can be talk or music. People involved in the station can also get involved in fundraising for the station. Being a part of KUCI during my college years was fun and it was also about real life situations like running a station. It's definitely a team effort. Today, I sub from time to time and I always love to come back. KUCI is very inclusive and eclectic. It's definitely worth listening too and also being a part of. It's the most grass-roots college radio can get. read more

I spent the majority of my college years at this radio station from midnight to 3am. Was I a student of uci? nope. Was I a broadcast journalism extension student? nope. Was there some uber-awesome, secret club within the three campus portables that defined the radio station? yups* *This one time, my band played the ska parade. We were very unprofessional and kept stopping and shouting things between songs. We were almost removed from the building before our pseudo-climactic "hit" song. (You see, the ska parade was the most recognizable program to come out of this radio station at the time. We weren't the most likely candidates for such a show, but our odd stream of local popularity garnered us the chance to play. Because our kuci loyalty was already previously established with "a little something refreshing" and "the skunk club" which aired pretty much at dawn and played our music regardless of established popularity, we decided it would be much more amusing to just mess around for 45 minutes on the ska parade, and "rep" for our early morning friends) We finished the set and walked away laughing heartily. That was just one miniscule memory. I love this station. I miss that stuff so much. I don't even know what the lineup is anymore. I bet it still rocks. read more

This station is TERRIBLE! I drive the shuttle buses around the UCI campus and the only station we are aloud to listen to is KUCI while at work. The reception is terrible so it is just static half the time and they have these huge two hour blocks of talk radio. One day at work I learned the difference about eating sliced apples versus eating a whole apple, they talk about it for about 30 minutes before moving on to some other boring topic. Another time they talked about politics for an hour which was kind of interesting but got old after the first 5 min. The music is bad a times too. Some things they play is tolerable other times it is so random and out there I just turn the radio off. During Halloween they played some weird thing that wasn't even music it sounded more like the 3 witches in the beginning of Shakespeare's Macbeth. Defiantly not a station I would recommend, or would listen to on my spare time when not at work lately I have just been turning the radio off when driving the bus. I hope they get some better music soon and get rid of the talk radio. read more

Most shows are 2 hours long, and each show has a different concentration and host(s). There are both music shows and P.A. talk shows. KUCI gets a lot of bad hype with listeners who tune in during a show that really is not the best choice for him or her.... the type thinking that college radio is just noise and deep experimental. Well, the station does have such shows, but they are just an increment of what is one broadcast. It is a great place to discover that hibernating passion you have for say zydeco or jazz or movie scores or elves. You can call and make requests easily or just talk to one of the DJs explaining why you were not happy to hear one hour of horror music on your early morning commute in the fog. And if you are the type that likes listening for mistakes on-air, or hosts rambling on about nothing related to their music, or PSAs warning you against the danger of getting hit by a train.... then, although what I just wrote appears unappealing, this is still the station meant for you. I recommend looking at the program guide online at kuci.org to choose a show that would suit you. read more

This review would be a bit bias because I'm actually staff here but there are a few things that can be said about KUCI that are neutral/critical in nature. The Pros: -If you actually look around the schedule on the website there are some very awesome shows w/anything from Hip Hop, Rock, RPM, World, etc. Some recommended shows: Midnight Anthem, Bunnies In Space, Kinda LOL, Double Cheeseburger, Sunny Beats, and Country Concoctions. -Awesome selection of music in the library. As a staff member (and when I was taking the class) I have access to new music of the indie variety for every genre. Some (like for example, Black Keys) end up being mainstream pretty quickly, so it's a great way to discover new music that may end up being mainstream. -You can take a class to train as a DJ w/out going to UCI. Yes, this is open to community members too. The class isn't too hard and it's a nice hobby for music or talk enthusiasts. -DJs and staff are usually pretty cool people. The station is a nice place to hangout and it's a really cool way to make new friends and find out about new music. There's also usual giveaways to concerts and such. The neutral: -The station's power is a bit weak so the static tends to kick in and the range isn't very good. The bad: -Some shows can be pretty bad, which makes one think the whole station may not be that good. -Programming could be better (tied in w/the shows comment above). read more

Okay, here's the greatest problem with this station: it doesn't know who its target audience is. You'd think that a college radio station would target college students, right? Well, yeah, but then you have totally strange talk shows that have nothing to do with students. For example, there used to be a weekly talk show with a girl that talked about the injustice of homeowner's associations. Intriguing topic, sure, but here's the thing: most students aren't homeowners. I don't really get why they're talking about stuff like that when they could be discussing university waste spending, or perhaps more relevant, horror stories about VDC/VDCN/AV/PDS/CDS's housing administrations. It is UCI's radio station after all. Next, their music choice seems like its completely random. There's indie stuff, sure, but it seems like they just randomly pick genres at various times of the day, some that are in complete opposite to each other (I heard Christian music one time, and then anti-religion music a while later, what?). This, plus they had a talk show one time about sexual fetishes and fetish clubs in the OC, which they assured existed despite the conservative nature of the area. It was one of the few talk shows that kept my attention for the entire duration, but it would definitely not be for everyone. So yeah, I don't know who they're trying to get to listen because it feels like they're just shotgunning topics and genres for discussion and music. The thing I hate most is probably how underrepresented classical music is. But anyway, the station was so bad that UCI's Anteater Express shuttles changed the station from KUCI to 104.7 after all the mass hate in less than a quarter and a half.
