Absolute GEM alert! Three days into our Vancouver trip and this is easily the highlight. Coming from LA, we have high standards for food, and this place blew us away. We ordered the pork belly kare-kare, chicken adobo, beef flakes, egg rolls, and pancit--every single dish was a hit. The portions are huge (leftovers for our group of four!), the ambiance is lovely, and the service is truly exceptional. It's one of those rare spots where you're happy to pay and tip well because the experience is just that good. If you're craving Filipino food, this is a MUST. If you are wondering where to go for a traditional Filipino boodle fight for just a group of four people this is your place. It's hard to find places that offer this for only four people. Normally you need a lot more so this is an excellent little gem of a location to know. The service was really excellent, and you could tell it is family run. You can see also some personal memorabilia and collections in the bathroom, which really gives the traditional province feel of the Philippines. Philippines is a vast country with over 100,000 islands and this place gives me a feel of the province. The service was really good and the ambiance is nice. Though I would have life to see a few more things even like plants are photos in the main dining hall. Something to be aware of and it is a common problem for most places in Vancouver. Kulinarya was my second experience with Filipino restaurant in Vancouver, being highly recommended by several people. Overall, really positive experience with regard to taste, portion sizes, and prices. Dishes are definitely meant to be eaten with rich and shared with the table as they can be rich on their own. Service is a bit slow due how busy the place was (we came on weekend) and ambiance can be loud as people came in big groups. Spring Rolls ($14) Pork and vegetables based mini spring rolls. I'd say this is decent appetizer, but just so-so compared to the rest of the dishes Kare-kare ($25) Beef stew with peanut sauce, served with eggplant and bokchoy. They also give you shrimp paste on the side, which really helped to cut through the richness of the peanut sauce. Really good dish especially the the eggplant, but I find the beef had too much fat to meat ratio Crispy Pata ($24) I feel like this is the Filipino take on German pork knuckle dish. Always a fan of crunchy skin, and paired well with the soy based dipping sauce and pickled salad (serving similar purpose like sauerkraut) Halo-halo ($10) The only other halo-halo I've tried was served in a bowl, whereas this one is slightly tricky to share since it's in a glass. Had an amazing experience at Kulinarya with their Kamayan feast! The staff were friendly and accommodating. When we pre-ordered from the menu selections we were able to choose a dishes from various categories including pork, beef, chicken, vegetables, and seafood. My favourite dish was the Pinakbet. The feast itself definitely fed more than our group could eat. Many leftover were taken home. The restaurant isn't too big, so it is best to make a reservation. Kulinarya is a gem in the suburbs of Vancouver! As a Filipino, I know good Filipino food. Kulinarya has very delicious sinigang, and a vegan option tofu sisig that satisfies! The grilled pusit is the best I've ever had as it was cooked just right making the bite perfect and not chewy. Their choice of decors, detailed table settings and furniture creates a perfect ambience for dining. We walked in on a very busy Saturday evening without reservations. Carlee made a way for us to be accommodated promptly...she told us it may be one hour wait and we were willing to wait that long but it turned out to be a 20 minute wait. Carlee served our table and her service is impeccable. I would dine and recommend Kulinarya as often as I could but I'm just visiting Canada. MASARAP!!! Kulinarya is an extraordinary neighborhood restaurant in the Grandview-Woodland area which blends into Little Italy. The restaurant while small, packs a punch on all levels. Ambiance-Not fancy but clean and decorated well with plants, pictures, and house items giving off a "welcome to my kitchen" vibe. Food-We talked with the owner and her recipes come from the best source of course, her mom. =) Over the years a few tweaks but not enough to take away from the traditional Filipino flavors. Portions are huge. We got: Kate-Kare which is beef, tripe, and vegetables in a rich peanut butter sauce. This was really good but a little daring for us to order because my wife really love's her own mom's version and mom beats restaurant 99.9% of the time lol. She liked it but just in case, mom-in-law if you're reading this yours still rules. The owner suggested the Crispy Binagoongan which is crispy pork, eggplant, green beans , in shrimp paste sauce. I was genuinely surprised because I was worried the strong smell of the bagoóng shrimp paste would overwhelm but it didn't. It ended up being my favorite dish. Tofu Sisig: we love pork Sisig but with beef and pork already picked, another meat dish seemed too much. It was solid but lol, I would have liked the pork still. Drinks also had a Filipino twist. How about an Ube-colada? Dessert and booze at the same time! My wife ordered a virgin mango mojito which she loved even without a buzz. Service-I really enjoy when I see a place that has "regular" clientele. It means they have developed a loyal friendly relationship. While I didn't hear "NORM!" being yelled, I did see the owner excitedly greet customers by name. It's not just Filipinos either. The restaurant was packed with multiple ethnic groups when we visited. Filipino comfort food is always a good idea. Kulinarya dishes are classic with a twist of hipster or maybe just because it's on the Drive. The chicken adobo is good and not oily. The lumpia is OK. Vegan filipino options! While I usually stick to full vegan or vegetarian restaurants when traveling, my partner and I couldn't resist dining at Kulinarya when we saw they had clearly labeled vegan options. Sadly, it is such a rarity to find these foods made vegan. When we arrived around 6/6:30pm, we walked inside and saw the place was completely packed! It's a modestly sized spot but we weren't expecting a full house. Fortunately, there were a couple spots outside and they were perfect for a nice summer's day. Due to the busyness, I assume, it was a little slow in getting our order taken but once that was done the food came shortly later. There was initially a snafu where they brought out someone's non-vegan dish (much to our chagrin), but after that it was smooth sailing. While I wasn't a huge fan of their fresh lumpia take (nothing beats the original spring-roll style), the pancit and the kalabasa were spot on. Everything was also gigantic portions and definitely too much for two people. I would recommend just splitting one entree and appetizer. Finally, they're located in a fun neighbourhood in Vancouver. Stopped by here on a Thursday afternoon for lunch. This was me and my boyfriend's first time having Filipino food in Vancouver and everything we ordered was so flavorful! We got the beef kare-kare, lechon kawali and bbq pork skewers. The vegetables on the kare-kare were perfectly cooked, even the eggplants still have a good amount of bite to it! The portions were quite big and we had to box some for takeout (my boyfriend typically eats a lot!). Only comments were that I wish there's a bit more fat on the pork skewers (that charcoal caramelized fat ) and that the food is on the pricier side, which I guess can't be compared to other more fast food style places. This is it, great texture. The fried bell peppers are delightfully sweet too. A bit small though. - the Sisig is the star and a must. The garlic fried rice and egg completed the dish and was so tasty! Probably the best garlic fried rice from any Filipino restaurant that I've tasted. Ube Brownies- 7/10. This was a little too sweet at first bite, and the Ube flavor wasn't as potent. Tokwa Baboy (fried pork belly and tofu with a soy and vinegar sauce)- 9/10. After seeing travel food video on Crispy Pata, I knew I needed to eat it and came across Kulinarya having it on the menu. I would consider myself an expert in Filipino cuisine. As I have traveled many countries and made it a goal to eat Filipino food at the places I visit. Kare Kare - 12/10 - the peanut butter sauce was creamy. Make sure to add the tripe for free. The veggies were fresh and cooked right. Tokwa Baboy - Pork belly grilled to perfection. Kulinarya is a popular Filipino restaurant in Vancouver. They now have two locations- Commercial and Coquitlam. This one in much busier than the Coquitlam location, as we couldn't find parking anywhere. They offer homecooked style meals, which feels so much like comfort food! I really enjoyed my eggplant dish with rice, and some mango juice. The server was pleasant, as well. She came to check in a few minutes after she served my meal. I'm Filipino, so naturally of course, Filipino food has a very special place in my heart. Many of my friends ask me for recommendations on where to try Filipino food in Vancouver. The answer I would always give is that it's always just better at someone's house, and not a restaurant. That's until I heard about Kulinarya which just opened on commercial drive. If you're curious about Filipino food and don't know where to start -- Kulinarya definitely gets the stamp of approval in my books! The restaurant itself has a hip and trendy vibe. It is beautifully decorated with colourful accents and photos on the walls. Even the sinks in the bathroom are beautiful and colorful! I applaud whoever was the director of design. Also, I have to say props to whoever makes the music playlist that plays in the background -- my friends and I were vibing out the whole time! More importantly... how authentic was the food you ask? Take it from me, the flavours were spot on. I ordered the Sinigang, which is traditionally a very savoury and sour dish with pork and vegetables. It's literally my favourite food that my mom made for me growing up. When I tasted the first spoonfull of the tamarind broth, I thought --- YUP, that's it! The level of sour kind of kicks you in the face -- just how I like it. But it might be a bit weird for someone who is not used to this type of flavour. If it's your first time trying Filipino food, I would recommend the Lumpia (springrolls) to start, which are served with a sweet chilli dipping sauce. Lumpia is served at almost every Filipino party, and are always a crowd favourite. I would recommend the breakfast items (eg: Tapsilog) which are all pretty solid -- Barbeque meat, rice, and egg served in a skillet. Another safe option could be the chicken adobo -- which is also a favourite dish of mine! The only downfall was the dessert.... the lecheflan was too dense and needed to be more creamy... and parts of the cassava cake were cold in the center. I think it's because of the container that it was served in... it was too deep so the cake wasn't heated evenly. I have to say that the *flavours* were definitely all correct, so it was just the texture that was the issue for the desserts. I'm happy and proud that a bit of my culture is being shared in the Vancouver community! This was my first time trying Filipino food despite my fiancé being Filipino. All the food was very flavourful and prepared well. However, the service was lacking. The restaurant was completely full but there were only 2 servers- I think it took about 45mins for us to get our food. While the flavour palette is all new to me, I liked the chicken adobo and sinigang best. The great big sign out front, "Vegans welcome", got us in the door. They serve meat dishes, but they also have about 10 all-vegan dishes, ranging from appetizers (including lumpia) to vegetables dishes, noodles, and a soup. We ordered the sizzling tofu, pinakbet (green beans, squash, eggplant, and okra [though it came with bitter melon instead]), and pancit bihon (a noodles dish with tofu and veggies). The sizzling tofu comes on a hot plate and was particularly delicious despite its simplicity (the lemon juice really adds a lovely touch to it). The veggie dish was tasty and so were the noodles. The flavours were all fairly mild. Though it's definitely a vegan-friendly place menu-wise, towards the end of our meal, they started preparing a big table with all sorts of pungent meat and seafood dishes, which honestly smelled horrendous -- we had to quickly finish and leave, as the smell was making us nautious. This might disincentivize us to eat here in the future and perhaps do take-out instead. The bill for the three dishes came to $42 after tax, before tip. Very friendly and fast service. Authentic Filipino cuisine at it's finest. This is my favourite spot in Vancouver to get Filipino food. I've been to Kulinarya a few different times now for different reasons: pop up events when they bring in Filipino chefs from around the world and showcase a special menu and on my own time for brunch and dinner. All the times I've been have been excellent. I've said it in past reviews, but I don't normally seek out Filipino food when I go out to eat, primarily because I've been spoiled with such great Filipino food at home. Nothing can compare to my parent's and grandma's cooking. Buuuuut, Kulinarya comes really really really close. They are about as authentic as you get all while adding a modern twist to their dishes. I love me a good Filipino breakfast and Kulinarya does this well. They have your typical fried rice, eggs and longanisa dishes, which is fantastic, as well as an assortment of other dishes. To be honest, I haven't tried any of their other brunch dishes, primarily because I love me a good traditional Filipino breakfast. But they do have ube pancakes, which is on my list for my next visit. They also do Kamayan style meals which means "eating with your hands". This is a unique Filipino experience where all the food is placed on top of banana leaves and you dig in with your hands. It's $30/person Monday-Thursday and $35/person Friday-Sunday, which is a great deal for all the food you get and the experience you can brag to your friends about. Filipino dishes are usually heavy on the seafood and meat, but Kulinarya is one of the only Filipino restaurants that I've see create a separate veggie menu. Snaps and applause for them! Just as good as I remembered. I got the vegan kare-kare this time, and it was super delicious and flavourful. Lots of veggies in an aromatic peanut sauce. Only complaint is that the green beans and eggplant could've been cooked a little longer for a more tender mouthfeel as the green beans were quite crunchy. For meat eaters the star of the show is the bbq pork skewers. They're listed as an appetiser but the portion is quite big. The garlic fried rice was also a hit. However the crispy pork belly was thought to be too greasy, although the skin was really quite crispy. Spring rolls were also good. As a native, I can confidently say that this is one of my absolute favorite Filipino Restaurants in Northern America. In fact, it is so hard for me to think of any other restaurant that can top this - Filipino Cuisine, or not. I went with a friend who isn't too familiar with Filipino food and culture; while we were eating, she blurts out "I can't believe I never really had Filipino food before, this is amazing!" Aside from ordering a la carte style they also have this fun kamayan feast where they lay out your choice of dishes on banana leaf on top of the table and you can feast using without utensils - definitely worth a try with a large group! In my recent visit we came to the vancouver location with a group of friends and ordered a some dishes to share. The kare kare was my favourite with the peanut sauce and tender beef.
