Sushi and miso soup was so good. We got the rainbow and maki roll and 1 chef's selection set. The service could have been better cuz we were waiting for a while for them to come to our table to order but it wasn't that big of a deal because the food was so good.

We had been asking around for the best sushi in the downtown Montreal area for some time and everyone seemed to recommend Kyo, including the concierge at our hotel. In my opinion, not everyone gets sushi right, specifically with the freshness of the fish, so we were pleasantly surprised to find Kyo. Our group included 4 people who are absolutely obsessed with Sushi, and so I was curious what their take was. I tried the Snake roll, edamame, and requested an avocado/ cucumber roll which they made for me. The rest of the group tried the rainbow roll, chefs choice Maki combination, chefs choice sushi combination, tonkatsu pork, and the beignets for dessert. Let me start off by mentioning the incredibly kind service we received from the hostess, server, and staff the entire night. On an incredibly busy Friday night, they maintained their patience as the restaurant was completely booked, and were kind and pleasant in every interaction. The restaurant itself is beautifully located in downtown, clean, and spacious. You do not feel rushed to eat. The food was so good we have decided to go back for dinner one more night before traveling back home. The vegetables and fish are fresh, the portions are perfect yet generous, and overall, id rate this restaurant a 12/10. Highly recommend if you're in Montreal and looking for good food.

I arrived at the Le Westin hotel in Montreal early evening in much need of nutrition after most of the day traveling here. I was hungry and my main mission was to get food as soon as possible. Of course I used my handy Yelp app to search for dinner in proximity to the hotel, and Yelp suggested KYO and sushi sounded appetizing. When I arrived, I was pleasantly greeted in French of course, but I was accommodated in English. I asked for a bar seat as I was alone, and the bar tender was super friendly and offered some recommendations. The menu is organized by Izakaya dishes on the left and sushi on the right. I decided to get one of each, the Karaage and a Rainbow Roll. The Karaage was perfectly prepared with the breading crispy and the chicken moist inside with the honey and sriracha sauce well balanced with sweet and spicy flavors. The Rainbow Roll was a bit different with tempura shrimp and avocado roll topped with tuna, albacore, salmon and hamachi. The fish was extremely fresh, melting in my mouth with every bite. I was so pleasantly surprised that I mentioned it to the bartender and he informed me that all of their fish is delivered daily and never frozen or stored for long. Of course I enjoyed Japanese whiskey with my meal. The ambience was opulent, dimmed and conducive for conversation. I could only imagine having date night dinner here with my lovely wife. It was a nice start to my visit in Montreal, backing the renowned culinary status of Montreal.

We were greeted warmly by the friendly staff, setting the tone for a great dining experience. Service was top-notch from start to finish--attentive, timely, and welcoming. We started with the Ebi Tempura served with Tentsuyu sauce. Perfectly crispy and light, each bite had the ideal crunch without being greasy. The Gyoza Wagyu--pan-fried wagyu beef dumplings topped with sweet chili shoyu was a balance of savory and sweet , was spot on. The Takoyaki came drizzled with Kewpie mayo, Okonomi sauce, and a sprinkle of nori--classic Japanese street food done right! But the standout dish for us was the Kakuni--tender braised pork belly in a rich emulsion of butter and sherry vinegar. The pork practically melted in our mouths. Highly recommend if you're looking to explore small plates with big flavors

Pleasantly surprised by how fresh the fish was here- ordered the Hamachi Bibimbap and the Sashimi Salad. Both exceeded expectations. We came during lunch time and it was not that busy. Staff was pretty prompt, casual business was the ambiance, and overall could compete with the higher end sushi places around Montreal due to their fish quality. Appetizer choice came with either edamame or miso soup. you can't go wrong with either- if you need more salt, do the miso. if you want something plain with more protein, do the edamame Hamachi Bibimbap- I like this unique take of the traditional hot clay pot bibimbap. I think the fish on top is a good twist since usually the topping is land meat such as bulgogi or pork. A fish makes this dish lighter. Careful about stirring this dish too much because if the top raw sashimi gets buried, you end up with cooked fish. This is not bad but I think the raw experience makes this dish go down a little better. There is some kimchi in here and the pairing of veggies was also good. Sashimi salad had humongous sashimi pieces- about 8-10 pieces. Very generous slices to where even I was getting full and needed my husband to help finish this. Right? A sashimi salad you can't finish? Don't underestimate this portion size. Would come back here in future for a fish fix if I'm around- not a bad price and large portions.

We wanted to take a break from all the heavy food in Montreal and decided on sushi. Yelp brought us here with all the good reviews and it did not disappoint.  They were quite busy for dinner, but luckily they were able to squeeze the 4 of us at the bar. I would recommend getting a reservation here if you want to dine indoors. They do have a few tables outdoors but it was quite windy the night we visited.   Hubby and I shared: Miso Cod - sauce was delicious and came with different kinds of mushrooms. This also came last since it was a cooked entree Chef's Choice 7 pcs - very fresh sushi Haru Sushi - no rice and wrap in cucumber with salmon, tuna, albacore. So refreshing and tasty!  Robosutaa - soy paper wrap with lobster, crab meat and avocado. Overall Kyo was one of the best meals we had in Montreal. I wish we had room for the Yuzu donuts but we were stuffed!

I enjoy coming here for sushi in a relaxing modern dining room with wood finishing. It has more of a local clientele. Probably because it is a little more than what tourists want to pay even though it is in between the port and Place d'Arms. They have different menus for lunch and dinner. The second time I came for the salmon bento. The salmon didn't have crispy skin and had an odd texture maybe from overmarinating? If I return it will be for sashimi.

15 piece chefs selection is the way to go

Superb. 5/5 excellent the variety of sushi was wonderful and the chefs selection was superb. 4/5 great, the quality of the sushi was very high and the service was commendable. Frequent water is appeciated. Green tea was a hit. 3/5 good, pretty noisy which is ok, means the place is well loved, Bachelorette party, a birthday party, and more all going on. The donut dessert was a bit strange but good to ok. 2/5 meh ok, tables are tight, navigation to the basement bathroom takes some doing. 1/5 poor, nothing.

Rated #2 of 3179 restaurants in Montreal by readers of Tripadvisor. Came here without a reservation just as they opened at 5pm. Hostess told us that we could have a table for 2 until 7pm. The CAN19$ rainbow roll came with tuna, salmon, albacore with hamachi and avocado on the inside, along with a a small amount of wasabi, and a generous portion of ginger. No shrimp tempura despite the listing on the menu. I thought it was OK, but wife, who is an expert on sushi, raved about it. The CAN19$ pork goyas were delicious, but the sweet chili sauce was a bit too salty for my tastes. Both dishes came out within a few minutes. The CAD37$ cod dish took about 25 minutes to come. Absolutely superb tasting, with tender flaky buttery white fish falling apart with each forkful. Similar to Roy's miyosaki butterfish, but far cheaper. Portion size only 5 ounces, on the small side for a white fish and price. Still hungry afterwards, so ordered another dish. The CAN26$ Yaku Udon dish was temperature hot noodles served with mushrooms and tender chunks of fresh tasting chicken mixed in with kimchi sauce. I thought the combination was a bit unusual, but wife loved it, as it was very spicy. Left a 20% tip, but the credit card reader based that on both the price of the meal, and the 15% tax combined, instead of the meal alone. They had at least eight two person tables, of which only three were occupied when we left at 630pm. Could have stayed another half hour.

Servers are friendly and were able to accommodate our older guests by moving our high reserved table to tables that were lower where chairs were easier to sit on. I was also asking a lot out of them but they remained patient. Our waitress was very attentive and noticed half of our party didn't have chopsticks and got us some without us having to ask. The restaurant seems sanitary. Bathrooms actually smell good and are cleaner than most. Also, there aren't automatic toilets (YES!). It wasn't very busy around the 1:30-2:30 time but there were some families. Food took a while to come out. Sashimi was very fresh but very thick and I can say the same for the sushi, which wasn't hard to bite or chew. It was soft. Salad was delicious and had a unique sesame flavor. Overall, kyo bar satisfied us across the board with food, service, and ambiance. Chairs are cozy and comfortable. It's a nice restaurant to stop by if u don't mind the wait for the food.

The restaurant is located near the Word Trade Center. They have an extensive lunch menu with items ranging from sushi and poke to bento box and udon. We tried their karage and beef bento box which came in huge portion. Each bento also included a starter of our choice ( salad, miso or edamame). We liked our bento, the only complaint is the karage was like warm and not krispy enough and the tempura sweet potatoes weren't fully cooked. The service was a little slow but attentive.

7pc chef's choice nigiri and the tofu yaki udon off to the side
    Andrea L.

Slightly upscale izakaya in Montreal that opens late! My friend and I tried this place out after attempting to go to three other sushi restaurants, one of which was closed for the night, the other which we didn't realize was vegan, and the last which didn't seem to exist even though it was listed on Google. We didn't have a reservation, and the place was packed on a Thursday night at 9pm, but luckily there was one table available that accommodated us. We already had drinks prior to dinner so we only had food, but the drink menu looked great. I got the 7pc nigiri and the yaki udon made with tofu instead of chicken, and my friend ordered two rolls and two nigiri. Everything tasted fresh and made to order. My favorite was the scallop, sea bass, and hamachi nigiri - so good and honestly the highlight of my trip to Montreal. The only critique I'd give is that the noodles I ordered were too salty and drenched in sauce. I would have preferred less sauce or less salt. I also wish there were more sushi maki roll options. Almost all of the non-vegetarian rolls had shrimp or salmon inside and I do not eat either.

Tables are tightly situated and there's a cozy bar situation where I sat this time, able to watch the chefs cook right in front of me. The daily specials are posted on their Instagram page, as well as written on pieces of paper around the restaurant. My server quickly helped me to water and a glass of sake. I placed a to go order for one of the daily specials, the grilled sea bass with sushi rice and salad, with some kimchi. I also ordered the BBQ chicken with tortilla and salad, as well as vegetable gyoza. Everything was incredible. Truly. The gyoza came topped with green onions and was SO crispy and hot and was perfect with their soy sauce. I thought sea bass was wonderful with a unique almost smoky flavor that melted in my mouth paired with the slightly sweet sticky rice. The barbecue chicken was great as well and better the next day. One thing I don't really understand is why they served plain flour tortillas cut into quarters with their food. We didn't utilize this, nor the white butter/mayo sauce that came alongside it. I hope to eat here often, for years to come and am so happy to see this iconic Japanese restaurant still thriving years later.

They serve everything tapas style here meaning small plates that you share with others. Even the bowls are a little smaller portioned, a little harder to share. However I think the hot appetizers like the takoyaki (octopus balls), okonomiyaki (japanese omelette/pancake), and the karage (fried chicken) are the must tries! They are super beginner friendly options that taste super good! Lots of umami flavor and they are perfectly sized and portioned for sharing. I also enjoyed their mocktail drinks. The three in the photo are the three that they have. They are all green haha. I really liked the matcha one, it just tastes like a matcha latte but better! The vibes are casual, the waiters joke and talk in a more hang out way, and there's no rush to eat and move. They recommend the group meal offering and I can report that it is a TON of food and definitely all their best items. Our colleagues that shared it were the happiest, though they admit they could never hear what was delivered and they are blindly with no reference. I had skewers that I quite enjoyed, though one had enough cheese to last me a week, some of the best edamame (everyone wanted some), and a helping of rice due to my gluten free needs. The cocktails were really something special, definitely a menu you want to drink through. I wanted to love Biirū, but I do admit the reviews around the meal experience and communication from the waiters was fairly accurate. I don't think a few of us would've come here with our allergies had it not been a work dinner. Their understanding of celiac disease was low, like sure I could eat the soy sauce and not react right now, but I will later and that shouldn't be a risk a business presents. Further, we had to confirm 4 times that one dish was made on its own pan due to a severe anaphylactic allergy. The staff don't seem to speak to one another, so the delivery of food was horrible with parts going to one end when they belonged elsewhere.
