Wow! What an experience. We didn't quite know what to expect. This was an amazing mix of tradition, skill and performance art. This is the 5-star culinary equivalent to Cirque du Soliel, in that six people collaborated in small teams to prepare and present each delicious course with flair. Before each round, we were presented with the fish that was the base of the dish to follow. I liked this a lot because often I need to google less common fish to learn what they look like. I appreciated the tea ceremony at the end. It was a lovely finale to a very memorable experience. We will definitely return. read more

A brilliant Omakase experience, both food and ambience wise. The chefs are professional and clearly EXTREMELY skillful, and the wait staff is very attentive. Everyone sits at a counter around the kitchen so as to be able to watch the beautiful performance of culinary art while listening to peaceful Japanese music. The chefs also show you each fish before they prepare them, and demonstrate the different techniques which they employ to cook your food. During the service, the servers come around and explain each dish to you, and while it was hard to hear at times, it was much appreciated. All the fish is wonderfully fresh, and each bite is new and unique. By the end, I counted, and we had tried 26 different dishes. Absolutely exquisite experience. My brother got the sake pairing as well and was very happy with the options and with the portions. This was a magnificent dinner, and I would highly reccommend coming here. if you've seen the documentary "jiro dreams of sushi". This is the trend started by Jiro in a subway station in Tokyo. The customer comes in and the chef serves him a tasting menu of sushi items and other small bites. Omakase sushi experience. This is the first one of it kind in Montreal. 275$ per person. Arrive on time, dinner starts on time if you're late you miss out... As we arrive they take our coats and get us seated, instructions are given about phones and pictures, no flash and silent phones. we are seated around a rectangular u shaped bar, we were 11-12 but it can seat 15-16.The open kitchen behind the bar is curtained, when dinner starts the drums roll and the curtains rise slowly, the show is about to start. The whole meal is an experience, an orchestrated dance of balanced service with attention on detail and precision. the meal lasted two hours, and service flowed never stalling. it was never rushed but before you know it, it was over. And you pay and leave, no lingering... it's a bit rigid and structured. I very much enjoyed the experience as a whole, though the food, some of it was amazing, some were just ok, and then a few i din't like... though at 28 servings, it's practically impossible to please everyone on every dish. A matter of taste and opinions, the cooking was on point and the ingredients were fresh and of high quality. I have posted pictures of every dish below, and a small impression of each dish... marked with * to *** depending on how much i liked the dish. Mostly the one * is because I don't like the ingredients or dish not because it wasn't good. A few dishes got no star hihi. Wagyu mustard seed black salt: well seared, too bland * Donburi salmon otoro rice bonito flake wasabi: nope, fishy roe, fishy salmon, didn't like the contrast... Salt water eel with roasted sesame seeds: Love eel, the roasted sesame really made this fly *** Tamaro with white fish: soft texture but too sweet, fish was lost * bone broth ramen with gold flakes: just broth and ramen. bold uncrowded flavours, deep rich broth and perfect noodles harmonize, unexpectedly amazing, and that's saying much since I don't like ramen that much *** Matcha opera with Crown melon: Meh, the crown melon supposedly costing 100$ per fruit, was unimpressive, maybe I didn't get a good piece, matcha opera cake and cream layers too dense * Matcha tea: serve ceremonially, not a fan of matcha * The most memorable was the yellowfin tuna nigiri, perhaps the best piece of sushi I've ever had. favorties are the Lobster, black cod, eel with sesame, ramen, torched scallop, chawanmushi, and miso black bean cucumber. After years of trying and enjoying fine dining around the world, I've come to a personal conclusion: I enjoy high end sushi restaurants the most. The food is typically lighter and I enjoy the process. Where to place Okeya Kyujiro Montreal? Since this restaurant aims squarely at the upper echelon, I'm going to compare it squarely against the following places I've dined: Masa (3*, NYC), Sushi Masaki Saito (2*, Toronto), Koya (1*, Tampa), Mujo (1*, Atlanta), to say nothing of other excellent spots around the world that just haven't had Michelin come their way. Okeya Kyujiro just isn't at those levels. It's a *rushed* affair that crosses a line I didn't know possible: it became pretentious. The conceit is dining at Okeya Kyujiro is like a show. They even have a curtain that drops at the end of the meal. If you've ever dining at a top sushi restaurant, absolutely nothing at the Okeya Kyujiro experience will make you feel like you're seeing something you haven't seen before. The only item that was somewhat unique was a bit of knife trickery to design a pretty picture from cut leaves. To me this is more Benihana's than fine dining. So what do we have? A very stressful experience to arrive early otherwise they will hound you. The hounding will be from a phone number that doesn't pick up. This is a hospitality industry first and foremost. This was not a place that makes you feel at home. This is a place that makes you feel like you're being led through a 100-minute seating so they can process the next set of guests. The sushi quality is great, 3 stars for just food... but this isn't 2003, so many places can boast that now. Let's look at the total experience, and I simply can't say I enjoyed the experience at Okeya Kyujiro like I did the aforementioned places. In a way I'm glad I experienced Okeya Kyujiro because now I feel better about enjoying those other places -- they really were that good. If you're looking for fine dining in Montreal, I enjoyed my time at Mastard (1*) and Toqué the most, followed by Mon Lapin and, to a much lesser degree, the disorganized and pretentious Restaurant Jérôme Ferrer (1*). None of those places felt rushed, they felt like fine dining. Honestly, the idea of closing the dark screen at the end of dinner only hammers home the point that they are done with *you.* Give it a pass. read more

They say on their website that "the show" will begin promptly. They're not kidding, this is a culinary show! The entire evening was thoughtfully designed and impeccably executed. We were greeted on the 'red carpet' outside. Upon entry, the "curtain" surrounding the preparation area is closed, so it does feel like entering a theatre before the show. The sake selections are limited but of high quality. The show begins with a sung prayer from the culinary team behind the curtain, setting the stage for what is to come. What follows is dish after delicious dish of top-notch ingredients prepared well. I also appreciated that the team is serious, but not stuffy. To quote a friend of mine, they take what they do seriously, but they don't take themselves seriously! It was also delightful when one of the chefs played the violin to serenade a person celebrating her birthday. The executive chef joked, "yeah, I can do that, too." I can't remember the names of everything we had, but I did take lots of photos! I would love to return; it was worth every penny. read more

Resto Okeya Kyujiro, located at 1227 de la Montagne, is the first Japanese Omakase restaurant in Montreal! Omakase translates "I will leave it up to you" (I.e. the sushi chef) to cater an astounding 20+ course sushi dining experience using the finest ingredients. The restaurant seats on average 10 people around the chef's station to truly experience how each dish is prepared as it comes to life. Each dish comes from a particular region of Japan and has a deep history interwoven in it. There are two services available for reservation including a lunch and dinner service. It is suggested by the restaurant to reserve one week in advance especially for weekends. The whole experience lasted around 3 hours. Cost: per person ~200$. It is definitely an experience at Okeya Kyujiro. This review is only for their omakase brunch. There is an option for an omakase dinner. It starts promptly at 12:30pm. Seating only fits around 10 but when I was there, I think there was only my party of 3 and another party of 2. There were two servers that provided instructions on how to enjoy the meal and also explain each item of each course. It was a 15 course meal (not including the tea service at the end). At first you might not think it'll be filling but as you progress through each course, you do start to get full. The menu changes by season. Overall, I think it's a really nice leisurely experience to have. Omakase isn't for everyone and it's definitely not an all-the-time meal. read more

We went to Okeya on a weekend evening last summer. They are one of the only restaurants in Montreal currently serving Omakase style sushi. We had previously ordered their takeout boxes during quarantine and we liked how fresh and meticulously prepared they were. The Japanese word "Omakase" means "I leave it to you" (according to Google). The chef surprises you with a carefully crafted menu consisting of 20 small courses that balance each other out perfectly. It is much more of an experience and a show as you get to learn about the ingredients and watch the chefs prepare each of the dishes. The savory part of the meal was an assortment of light traditional Japanese eats, some sushi as well as cooked meat and fish dishes. The traditional Japanese dishes include a delicious omelet dish, handmade noodles in a clear broth and a seafood rice bowl with caviar. Sushi was the focus of the meal and every piece was absolutely delicious. You could taste the high quality and the freshness of each fish. The most outstanding ones for us were the monkfish liver, the uni and the sweet shrimp. As for the cooked dishes, the grilled fish was perfectly cooked and flaky. The grilled Wagyu beef was also buttery and tender. The dessert was a mango mousse served with some fresh fruits imported from Japan. The dinner is concluded with a traditional Japanese tea ceremony performed by their in-house expert on Japanese culture. The restaurant is set up in a square with seating on the edges and the kitchen in the center. To ensure every customer can be seated next to the kitchen, they only serve 15-20 people at a time, which is done twice a night. They work on a reservation only basis. The omakase dinner has a fixed price per person of $250 before tax and tips. The meal took around 2 hours. The service was amazing and we would definitely come back as they said their menu is constantly being updated. They were not serving alcohol at the time of our visit, but mentioned that they plan to introduce different sake pairings that will take the entire experience to the next level. This is not an all you can eat sushi buffet experience, so set your expectations accordingly. You'll leave full but not stuffed to the gills. Entire thing was a fab performance. I don't care much for loud music to be honest, and it was a little off putting before the show started but the rest of it was excellent. They show the food before they cook or prepare it, the dishes were all tiny amazing bites, so varied, full of flavour and care. I'd absolutely come back. At $275 plus tax plus tip, it's not a casual dinner, but a night out with a show. Don't plan on having any deep or long conversations with friends because you'll be too busy eying what they're doing; this is not the place for that. Everything was delicious. Some bites more memorable than others but none that were disappointing. The gold leaf in the ramen was unnecessary but I'm against gold leaf in foods in general as it's wasteful and excessive in my opinion. Best sushi in Montreal and in the top 3 restaurants I've eaten at in the area, hands down. Incredibly fresh, delicious meal. It's quite expensive (200$ fixed price menu per person) and they do not sell alcohol. It's a unique experience. All customers come in and eat at the same time (maximum 12-15 people per sitting, 2 sitting per nights). The 'show' part of it was perfect in my eyes - exciting to watch, while not too over the top. The pacing at which they gave us the food was just right. I can't wait to be back and introduce more people to it! Bravo! Doesn't say what time they're open until. When you call, the automated answering service they are using says, 'If you know your party's extension, press 1, to use their directory press 2, to speak with the operator, press zero. When you press zero, it says it's not a valid extension. So you have to hang up and call back, and when you do, press 2. When you do that, it gives you a very long message in which they tell you the fastest way to get a response is an email, but the email may not be responded to for several business days. The only way to make a reservation, is with another app called OpenTable. And they state it takes several months. Run away, stay away. read more

The aim of O.K. has been to transport a truly Japanese cuisine experience to Montreal and they definitely accomplished their mission........an absolutely wonderful 9-12 course prix fixe dinner in a Japanese setting. The various fish dishes served were innovative and it was very interesting to watch the chef's preparation team prepare all the dishes. At this point in time, there is not one Michelin star restaurant in Montreal. There is not a doubt in my mind that O.K deserves a Michelin star and I'm comparing their cuisine with what I recently experienced at Le Bernardin in NYC. J'ai eu une très belle expérience chez Okeya. Vous devez d'abord confirmer votre réservation à la porte et ensuite vous entrez dans la salle (il y en a juste une) où tout le monde s'assoit autour de la cuisine ouverte. Vous avez le choix de boissons alcoolisées ou non, mais j'ai choisi de boire du thé chaud à cause du temps froid. Lorsque tout le monde est assis, les rideaux se lèvent et vous assistez à de l'art culinaire. J'ai pu goûter à 24 services différentes : les textures et les saveurs sont variées et c'est une expérience que je n'oublierais pas aussitôt. Les poissons étaient très frais et le bœuf wagyu fondait dans la bouche. Le rythme du souper était adéquat, les plats se succédaient sans avoir de longue pause, donc c'était agréable à manger. La soirée se termine avec une cérémonie de thé : très authentique comme expérience. It was very good, and very interesting. Food freshness is excellent and a lot of their ingredients are imported from Japan. I loved the experience. However I felt they kept insisting about having brought that fish or that watermelon from Japan, as to justify why they were charging us $250 per person. But I didn't feel blown away as, and I don't want to sound like a snob, I had better in Japan. I will likely go again as the experience was great and it's closer to my home than Japan. It's worth the price if you are looking for this kind of experience (and the food was delicious) and it's great to have such a place in Montreal. read more
