Mix also puts on awesome events like Mix After Work where they bring up and coming artists to small venues and you usually get to meet the artists and take pics with them too after the acoustic show! They also do an awesome charity concert every year around Christmas called Chris-Mix where they collect toys for the Toys for Kids program and all of the ticket proceeds got to a charity. They're an awesome station to listen to at work as well as any other time of the day! Everyone should check them out!

On the other end of the spectrum is "Lady Spins the Blues." The promo is so unappealing that I actually change the station when it comes on. Her words and delivery remind me of an Indiana librarian trying to excite us about a newly-released children's book. Totally not in keeping with the subject matter, and completely uninspiring. The AM spot, "Sonoma Spotlight" is even spottier. The regular host sounds ancient and he does a pretty poor job of interviewing folks. Lastly, the Friday morning Real Discovery/At the Movies Review is unlistenable. It gets a D minus.

After the radio silence of Pacific Coast Highway 1, one can tune into KGGV as soon as one pulls into Duncans Mills/Monte Rio. They have an astounding array of music. They'll play a hymn sung by a choir... then big band music. They'll play country, local musicians, and the latest pop hits. This afternoon, there was a thoughtful discussion about the current issues in the banking industry. Then there followed a cooking show in which a man talked about his boyfriend bringing home the bacon (a ham, to be exact) and salmon recipes. Very chatty and friendly. KGGV calls itself "The Bridge." It's a beacon of civilization in the wilderness. As soon as one reaches the Pacific Ocean or Santa Rosa, it fades out. THE BRIDGE crosses the radiowaves for listening pleasure!

They no longer do CD reviews (or rarely)... and pretty much, the only useful section is for current events, like knowing when the Suscol Intertribal Pow-Wow, the Blessing of the Olives, or SoCo Vegfest is held, complete with admission prices&location. Their events calendar is valuable. They now treat winery&restaurant reviews as optional (because TripAdvisor, OpenTable&Yelp do it as well?) which is too bad, since they had their own distinct perspective. As far as free, local papers are concerned, Portland's Willamette Week is substantial&superior. I used to avidly read the North Bay Bohemian weekly. I made sure to get a copy. Now I'm indifferent.

I want to give a thumbs-up for the Bohemian. Its reviews of movies and films are funky and often…read moreoriginal, they are the only ones attempting some modest investigative journalism (recently about the almost $500,000 missing from the Petaluma city coffers and hidden somewhere within a construction company?), their Open Mic contributions reflect the community spirit, and even the letters to the editor are entertaining. Special issues (about wine, beer, Fall Lit, etc.) are always worth a leisurely read with a good strong cuppa. The Bohemian shouldn't be compared to the Press Democrat, which is run-of-the-mill predictable, homespun (if you like that kind of gossipy familiarity and name dropping), and just a pale shadow of a copy of the NY Times. And the Bohemian is free. It's worth supporting, this lovable oddity.
