We were in town for Christmas and feeling super under the weather. After a family Christmas gathering, we dipped and went to LaTaste for some comfort food. Nothing warms you up like a bowl of pho on a chilly day! We were expecting it to be more American since we were in Alabama, but LaTaste's pho was so flavorful that it totally hit the spot. This is legitimately one of the best Vietnamese places I've been to anywhere in the US. The pho broth is substantially more flavorful and complex than my favorite place in Seattle. The rice dishes are fantastic and even the boba is comparable to or better than my favorites on the west coast. It's an absolute must try if you want viet food in the south. read more

My total for both was 42.64 which wouldn't be a problem if it was actually the dinner portion, this is a lunch portion at best but definitely not dinner. If I could give zero stars, I would. I really tried to give this restaurant a fair chance. I just moved to the area and was excited to find a new pho spot--since I absolutely love pho. First visit: I went for lunch with my 5-year-old daughter, who also loves pho. When the server (who seemed to be the owner) came to take our order, I politely asked if they had a kids' pho. She immediately responded in a rude tone, saying, "No, this is all we have," while pointing at the menu. She then started explaining that the lunch menu was cheaper than the regular one and even asked, "Do you want me to prove it?" I was taken aback but tried to move past it. My daughter wanted a pineapple boba, but the server said they didn't have that--or about four other flavors listed on the menu. When I asked which ones were available, she just rattled off the ones they didn't have again, in a very impatient tone. At that point, I'd had enough. I told my daughter we were leaving. The woman's attitude was rude, short, and completely unwelcoming. Second visit: Fast forward to yesterday--I wasn't feeling well and wanted pho (it's my go-to comfort food when I'm sick). I ordered takeout online, not realizing it was the same place. When I arrived, a man helped me this time, and while service was fine, the prices were shockingly high: one meat pho, one meatless pho, and one order of spring rolls came to $54. When I got home, I noticed the broth was unusually dark. Still, I gave it a try--only to find it extremely sweet. It tasted like they had added sugar or sauce to stretch the broth. It was completely inedible. Even my daughter wouldn't touch it. I ended up throwing everything away--$54 straight down the drain. Never again. Theeee best PHO I have had in so long being middle of America. Sweetest family and seriously delicious food. Price point was worth it although a little expensive. I was hungry and with 3 kids so we dug in and devoured the food before I had a chance to photo it. If I pass by again I am for sure stopping by! Worth it all the way! Fresh, flavorful broth. The worst service ever. The owner/server had the worst attitude ever. It took 45 mins to get our food! Including our appetizers. How did the 2 tables that came in after us get their food at the same time! At the end she threw our bill at the table next to us. No thank you's or anything. No apology for our the slowness. Finally some Flavor! My friend and I went to La Taste this Wednesday for dinner. So far, it's been our favorite meal since arriving to Alabama. We ordered the spring rolls, egg rolls, and the grilled pork noodles. The spring rolls were delicious. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and the peanut dipping sauce was great. The egg rolls with nuoc cham came out hot and crispy with fresh lettuce and mint. The rice noodle bowls had a lot of flavor and it was a generous portion. This restaurant is a small family owned restaurant and the co-owner that we met was so friendly. Came in a little after they opened. There were already 2 other customers seated. There's a sign stating to please wait to be seated. Waited a few minutes and no one came so decided to find my own seat. Sat for 10 minutes and no one ever came back from the kitchen. Since I had ample amount of time to observe, there are no menus available to look at, I don't even know where the register was. Someone finally came from the back and spoke to the customer that was already sitting, but never looked up to notice we were there and haven't been greeted or offered a menu. We went back finally after the reopening and had an awesome meal! We were both feeling something besides the usual pho we would get from there, so we ended up trying some new to us meals. I got the caramelized pork belly, while Matt got the Hue spicy noodles. They were both absolutely delicious and I think the pork belly is one of my new favorites! We also got spring rolls and egg rolls. Both were fantastic, but my favorite was the avocado smoothie. Sweet but not too sweet and with crystal Boba, it's a lovely little treat.
