He even received recognition from President Obama for his artistic contribution. I can't get enough of his work. They have yearly showings of his work and he attends them, usually in the summer. The lady who runs this gallery is kind and patient and always wears a friendly smile. She allows a person to browse and she is never pushy, but always helpful. I visit this gallery regularly.

So while vacationing in LaJolla and visiting the numerous art galleries we made a promise to each other that we were not buying anymore art. Simply because we have no more wall space. Then we came across LIK gallery. Before we entered we repeated our promise. Each photograph was breathtaking. We circled a few times and admitted we were in trouble. We stood several minutes looking at a photograph entitled Night Shadow. Brian and Katy, two art consultants, asked if we would like to view the photograph in a private room. No pressure at all from either one. They were both delightful. We looked at several frames and mattes. By then we were hooked. So, we are happily awaiting our new photograph. Walking into this gallery, at least on the day that we visited, it had a wonderful selection of art. Quite a few different styles, some whimsical, some serious, some just plain tasteful. There were paintings as well as sculptures. Some of the paintings were mixed media. I must have seen at least two or three pieces that I would have purchased on the spot if I had the funds (and I'm usually not the type of person who even considers spending a couple thousand on a wall hanging). Though, please note, my rating is not based on doing business with them, but based purely on my enjoyment of browsing and WANTING to buy, I must commend the curator for doing such a great job. If we're ever in the area again, I'd definitely come back. One art please!

I was at an Art & Wine Festival in Lafayette and was blown away by his photographs. I had never seen anything like them before in my life. Years later, I move back to San Diego and am ecstatic to find out that he has a gallery in La Jolla. I have been to a few of his unveiling events which have been so much fun. Seeing a gorgeous new photograph, exploring his gallery, enjoying live music, talking with Ian and his art consultants is a genuine pleasure. I currently have two of his photographs in my home, Archean Arc and Salutation. I also purchase his beautiful calendar every year and give them out as Christmas gifts, while also keeping one for my household. I have his coffee table book as well and have given that out as gifts too. His artwork is so stunning, the first time I saw Homage I was speechless at how beautiful it is. I was in a Cardiologists office last month and was taken aback (in an awesome way) by the huge framed Resurrection photograph they had on their wall. I was like "hey I know who that photographer is!" It was such a cool surprise. His gallery is a must see in La Jolla. His art consultants are so professional and so knowledgeable about each photograph. Truly, this was a pleasant surprise as we were able to browse the gallery and learn more of its mission. There were many others walking in and browsing the artwork. All of the pieces here are photographs taken for National Geographic, so you may see some that you're familiar with. What I loved most while visiting was the appreciation for all of the pieces, making you learn and understand your place in the world while observing a variety of portraits, from endangered species to landscapes of developing countries. Every picture is beautiful and tells such a compelling story. Although they are very expensive, you can buy any of the pictures and have it custom framed. There were plenty of options for this, and the pictures range in different sizes for purchase. Gallery staff walk around the floor, making sure to answer any questions you may have, including the background of the photos. They were very knowledgeable. But I think the best part of this gallery is that 27% of the sales goes back to National Geographic Society. What a wonderful way to give back while also taking home a prized possession.

The man didn't just write and illustrate best-selling children's books. He also created artwork during his 70-year career: sculptures, line drawings, commercial projects and private paintings. If you want to view his stuff, Legends Gallery has some on display. We recognized iconic illustrations (Cat in the Hat!) along with other sketches, fantastical sculptures and impressionistic artwork. All are for sale by the way, if you're looking for that ultimate souvenir of your San Diego trip. We are huge Dr. S fans so really enjoyed our visit!

Five minutes later, another couple walked in (older, dressed for an occasion), and she was at their throats for their wallets. Walking around them, explaining every single thing she could about whatever piece they glanced at. We received no attention. My s/o and I dress casually. Apparel isn't our primary form of expression, but I am admittedly a sucker for Murakami pieces. She would have known this had she gotten over her own self biases and held a conversation with us. The experience was distasteful because of this, and led me to having no interest in purchasing a piece from this gallery. The pieces were reasonably priced, and the selection was impressive. Solid selection of Murakami as of writing this. If you want to be treated as a customer, wear something that "looks" expensive. If you just want to look at the pieces, dress casually. The service could study the pieces more deeply based off of the conversations I had to overhear. Could likely take a few lessons away from them.

Cosmopolitan Art often time showcases plein air art, and a lot of the artists paint portraits that feature La Jolla. La Jolla is pretty and all, but the I don't see why anyone would drop a grand for a piece of art that looks like every other water color ever done. I like leaving a gallery feeling inspired, but I thought the ho-hum art the Cosmopolitan Gallery lacked creativity and I thought almost all of the work was irreverent.
