I was invited here by a family member to check out the annual (high school) senior art exhibition…read moreput on by the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA). I ended up attending this event with my wifey and other family. Finding this place was difficult only because I was given bad directions and no address. Parking is scarce likely because of the event, but found with moderate effort. I walked up to the place and loved the vibe. There was live music playing near the entrance and the art expo was easy to find with all of the signs pointing out the way. I was extremely impressed with the talent that these high school seniors displayed in their art. The art presented included: photos, sculptures, and paintings. There were a lot of exhibits and they were all fascinating in their own way. It was a free event, but the school could have easily gotten away with charging for it to raise some money. The place was pretty packed and in certain areas people were nearly shoulder to shoulder. It was cool to see this art. I've been here numerous times for various art and music events. The atmosphere is always laid-back…read moreand welcoming. The North Park community, and nightlife in particular, tends to be pretty trendy, but Agitprop draws in a more balanced crowd of locals, art aficionados, and hipsters alike. The space is visually appealing, sort of like a treehouse for adults. I never get tired of exploring the various nooks and landings. The unfinished wood walls and staircase create a lot of corners, which, in turn, create a lot of neat little sequestered areas. Even when the place gets pretty crowded, there's still empty spots which seem like private little hideaways when I come across them. Something about the set-up of this place just makes me feel like an introspective little kid. I'd love to play hide-and-seek there. Agitprop also puts on a lot of cool events. I've seen bands play there and have also gone to art shows. Whatever's being featured, it's always unique. The art displays, in particular, are really interesting and innovative and the events I've been to have featured exclusively local artists. The people affiliated with the space also appear to be involved in a lot of other events promoting local art, so it's really a great place to go to learn about/support the community. One thing I love is that the events I've been to have all been donation only. This is pretty yuppie-ish of me, but I feel like it's way more personable and genuine to ask for donations than to have a mandatory door charge. Plus I feel good about donating money and I always feel kind of bitter about being forced to pay for something. So I'm illogical, yes, but for me, the donation thing is a big part of Agitprop's charm. There is also generally a donation-only bar, run by someone who appears to be just another guest of the event, with a variety of beers and spirits you know somebody put up a lot of money for ahead of time. I think what I'm trying to get at is that Agitprop has a really personal feel, like you are going to a really cool party at someone's house, where you vaguely know all the guests. The only downside is that the bathroom is unisex and some dude inevitably urinates all over the floor around the toilet. I guess that's what public restrooms men use are like, but I feel sorry for whoever has to clean that up after the events. Overall, Agitprop is a strangely comforting place with an unpretentious communal feel and I've never been let down by an event I've attended there.

Rich Walker, the owner and artist, is an energetic and enthusiastic artist with a Zen spirit. When I walked into his studio I was surrounded by beauty and zest! I would be writing for hours if I tried to describe the color and movement of his pieces. He will create for you beauty and function that will suit your imagination and decor perfectly. What I wouldn't give to actually start with a completely blank room and build around one of his magnificant pieces.

The man didn't just write and illustrate best-selling children's books. He also created artwork during his 70-year career: sculptures, line drawings, commercial projects and private paintings. If you want to view his stuff, Legends Gallery has some on display. We recognized iconic illustrations (Cat in the Hat!) along with other sketches, fantastical sculptures and impressionistic artwork. All are for sale by the way, if you're looking for that ultimate souvenir of your San Diego trip. We are huge Dr. S fans so really enjoyed our visit!

There's some really cool art in here for display and for sale. It was a great spot to stop for a bit and admire some artwork especially the Dr. Seuss art.

This was my first visit to The Studio, a gallery tucked away in Hillcrest, and I was genuinely impressed. They showcase a wide range of artists, and it's especially great to see so many talented creatives from San Diego getting the spotlight. The featured show we saw was by Lance Chung, whose work beautifully captures dancers in motion. His pieces feel like stepping into a dream or a fairytale. They are whimsical, expressive, and just plain mesmerizing. Beyond the main exhibit, the gallery opens up into multiple rooms featuring other artists, so you can wander and discover even more creativity. One artist showcased pottery and mentioned she hosts group pottery classes. Honestly, such a fun idea for a birthday or team event.
