It was a little skeptical, but it was fantastic and something I recommend to anyone who's ever had foie gras or just thought about it . A wonderful dish and the best meal I've had on my trip so far, Tonight I had their very original take on a classic: carbonara pasta, with fried pancetta, egg, Parmesan, and spaghetti. It had the mouth watering flavor you would expect, but the textures were new, and the whole thing was incredible. We also had a pizza and salad with foie gras. Both nights had great - and very affordable - offerings of wine. One was from Saint Emilion and the other ore more local from Bergerac, and they knocked it out of the park. Of course, service is the thing that really brings everything together, and we had the best. Matthew was our waiter both nights, and was very funny and informed - he knew just the right wines to go with our meals, and helped us figure out everything else. Huge thanks to him, our meals simply wouldn't have come together, and the night wouldn't have been as much fun if not for him. I can't wait to come back and visit this very inventive, tasty and affordable restaurant in the future!

LES COMBARELLES…read more The Dordogne is so full of caves, you could spend your whole holiday underground. We made a quick visit this morning to Les Combarelles, discovered in 1901. One of two galleries, 140 meters long, is open to the public and contains engravings, sometimes drawings of animals such as horse, reindeer, and ibex mammoths. Quite impressive, considering that they were created some 13,000 years ago.

A large slice of toasted bread with melted goats cheese and thin cut duck breast with a house made pesto on a green salad loaded with fresh tomatoes. It was delicious. We ordered one for 22 Euro and another at 27 Euro. Our 6 course dinner included alcohol (liqueurs, wine). We also ordered some extra aperitifs. Rough summary of our epic country dinner: 0. We started by ordering some aperitifs: black walnut and chestnut. At least one of them was homemade, from their own nuts. Both were good. 2 Euro each. 1. Peasant soup (soupe de paysanne) was flavourful, salty, with chunks of soft bread. Nice and comforting. 2. Shots of fruit liqueur from a bottle shaped like the Eiffel Tower. Red wine in a carafe for dinner. 3. Pâté & bread course: Cou farci de canard (stuffed duck neck) and Foie gras entier with a glass of sweet Bergerac wine (I believe the foie gras & wine was the reason for the higher-priced 27 Euro menu) 4. Main course: Duck breast stuffed with foie gras and mushrooms with potatoes Sarladaise. Duck was overcooked. 5. Simple salad of lettuce with vinaigrette 6. Cheese & bread course: Soft fresh cow's milk and goat's milk cheese, with crusty Perigourdine bread. 7. Dessert: Walnut tart 8. More liqueur from the Eiffel Tower bottle. Several courses came in a communal serving dish/bowl, with more than enough for the two of us. It's impossible to eat everything. Food is hearty and comforting. The owner (Eric) was friendly, enthusiastic and happy to tell us tourists about the food and the culture of Perigord. It was wonderful to sit in Maraval's countryhouse stuffed full of food and drink, basking in the warmth of the countryside.
