I'm not sure why this not-so-little cafe has such bad reviews, but I found it to be rather…read morecharming, if a bit reminiscent of an American diner with the bright red interior. With all the simple French phrases on the walls and mirrors, however, I did get the picture as to what kind of cafe this is supposed to be. I found the menu to be pretty impressive, with a full gamut of just about every typical French favorite you might desire, as well as a few other mainstream options, like burgers and salads. The alcohol portion of the menu, while varied, did leave a little something to be desired, and at around £6 per cocktail, I wasn't sure the quality would be worth even that. I was tempted to see how their Croque Madame/ Monsieur would measure up to the ones I've had in LA, but the waitress insisted that their new- and slightly pricier- Beef Bourguignon Burger was well-worth trying. So I did. And it was delicious. Being from California, I've gotten used to the $16 burger, so I think just under £15 was a pretty fair price; though it could have been bigger. The fries were great, too... and now that I think about it, I ordered diner food in what should have been an authentic French cafe. Ah, well. I would go again, and think the service was top notch compared to other French establishments. Considering it's right next to Greenwich Park, it might just be worth forgoing the local pubs to try this place out, after your afternoon walk in sa scenic location.

The frites that came with my Rouge burger were nice and reminded me of fries back in he states. The dessert was good but tiny. The Bad: The actual service was fine...when we actually saw our waiter. He was few and far between, and we never actually got drinks...no water, no anything...until we reminded another waiter about 45 minutes into our meal. Sadly, even when my wife received her Earl Grey tea, it was cold. I still don't understand how that happens, but it did. He was a nice guy, but it seemed as though it might have been his first week or two on the job and was still figuring out a routine. The burger was over cooked and lacked any seasoning. The menu didn't have a feeling of Paris or even New Orleans. It seemed to be trying to replicate what one would expect, but it missed the mark just a bit. I would expect some beignets or étouffée to be an option. The Ugly: This place was not prepared for the customers. We arrived at around 3:30pm, and I'm finishing my review at around 5:25pm. We have been waiting on the waiter to take our payment for about 45 minutes. In our original waiter's defense, it seems as though he may have been the only one actually doing his job. I've never worked in the restaurant industry, but I always find it baffling how so many other employees can be just walking around while one or two tend to more than 10 tables. Overall, I wasn't very impressed with the food. It wasn't overpriced, but it was impressive either. I wish we had seen our waiter more than twice, so I could at least give points for service. Sorry guys...I wouldn't suggest this one.

A hidden French delight, just off Bermondsey street…read more Tucked at the back of some tennis courts in a public park, I wouldn't have known this place even existed were it not for a cryptic business card from its nearby sister restaurant (Casse-Croûte). Here, there is none of the intimacy that you get at Casse-Croûte but it somehow still feels personal and cozy. A seasonal menu is presented for lunch and dinner, with a selection of starters bolstered by several solid mains. No specials were on offer, so presumably the menu stays as is for a few months. Each main was intended for two, but such generous portions meant that this solo diner had to choose a couple of starters. The onion soup was a delicious, less filling twist on the classic version with a cheesy foam on top and a sablé to accompany, rather than the standard heavy croûte. The black pudding scotch egg was actually comprised of boudin noir, not black pudding which gave it a softer almost pasty interior that sat nicely in contrast to the crisp crumbed exterior. The enclosed egg was runny soft and rich. The sweet and earthy purée that the egg sat on complemented it well, though I found the scattered pickled chanterelles to be too sharp and acidic to work with the other ingredients. Some fragrant eau de vie de poire kept me going until the blueberry soufflé arrived with a dollop of rich pistachio ice cream. Overall: I'd go back, with my wife, to be able to unlock more of the menu. Pricey, but worth it if you want to eat something special whilst feeling comfortable.
