I have been getting popcorn from this stand for years and all of which was from their time previous location on the corner of 7th & D Streets SW. If you arrive on a day when the line isn't 10-15 deep consider that an anomoly. This popcorn stand attracted customers in SW from virtually all of the government buildings and foot traffic in the vicinity. All of the popcorn is made-to-order, however there are pre-made bags of popcorn readily available for purchase at a discount price. The reason for the long lines is because the popcorn is made to order, the popcorn is sold in large, multiple-serving bags, and the stand is a one-man show. Mike is never not moving in the stand, as he always seems to be preparing fresh popcorn. His customer service is generally good and sometimes he will engage you in light conversation of you engage him. However there are days when he is relatively quiet. On those days I don't take it personal or interpret it as a sign of disrespect, rather, I'm reminded he is a one-man show filling non-stop orders of popcorn. I like that you can customize your popcorn flavor. Some of the flavors available to order are traditional cheddar, white cheddar, jalapeño, butter, parmesan garlic, chive, pepper pop, and sour cream and chives. My mother-in-law has been buying me popcorn from Mike for years. She works very close by. However, she's been working from home during quarantine so she hasn't gotten to visit in a long time. I was finally able to venture out and find Mike. He was located at the corner of D and 7th SW when I found him. I had only ever tried his regular popcorn. During this visit, I was able to try the white cheddar popcorn. LOL...I didn't like the white cheddar, but I notoriously don't like flavored popcorn. I was able to get a few bags from my mother-in-law which was awesome right before Christmas. read more

Walked by a few times because of the line. This time I stopped because there was only one person in front of me. It was well worth the short wait and the owner was nice enough to offer a sample of the garlic parmesan I wanted. It did not disappoint. It was just the flavor I was looking for and everyone behind me knew I was a new customer and they and the owner were so nice to let me enjoy this experience for the first time. I visit Mike's stand every few weeks. Before the pandemic, you could find him at various places downtown but now he's been stationed off of 7th and D St., monday-friday. This could change when things get back to normal. Mike for sure have some of the best fresh pop popcorn in downtown DC! Since I love my popcorn on the spicy side, I usually get cheddar & pepper pop mix (my favorite). Also, the line and wait do tend to be long. However, it is a one man show so be patient! Freshly popped popcorn. THE POPCORN MAN as hes known in our office is generally out on the corner of 7th & D Streets, SW, daily except Wednesdays from 10:30am until about 2pm (weather permitting). It's a office ritual where the whole office orders at one time. So it may be 3 of us standing in line with 6-9 orders, so we go early. He also has grab and go - 2 small plain for $5. The large bag can last all week at my desk and sometimes about 1/10 of it goes home to be finished. He offers various toppings but I like mine plain. I work in Capital Gallery and I walk by people stuffing their faces with this popcorn every day. People literally circle his cart before he opens like a bunch of vultures waiting for something to die. I've always wanted to stop, but I've always had to be somewhere. I finally got a chance to stop by last Friday. Usually there are no fewer than eight people in line which doesn't seem like such a big deal, but his popper isn't that big and one person can wipe out his entire supply at once. The good news is that there's a constant supply of very fresh popcorn. I got the small bag for $3.75 (which is the size of a movie theater large). Like the popcorn cart virgin that I am I asked for plain-no salt/no butter. He wasn't the least bit rude, but said "Oh darlin', that's going to be awhile". He showed me the popcorn coming out of the popper and it was glistening with butter (or buttery oil). I said that's fine and got it with no salt or seasonings (while everyone behind me looked at me like I had four heads). My boyfriend and I ate it that night while watching TV and it's absolutely amazing...It's still amazing the next day and the day after that as we dig for the little bitty pieces mixed with the kernels at the bottom of the bag. The best popcorn I've ever had. I would consider myself a popcorn connoisseur. After all, it's been my 2nd favorite food since I was a small child (I'm currently 31). I've tried hundreds of different kinds of popcorn and literally almost burned my house down cooking stovetop popcorn when I was 11 (long story). I'm serious about my poppy corn. Anyway, I used to work on one of the corners he frequented (this was before covid so I'm not sure where he frequents these days) and there was ALWAYS a long line. When I interviewed at my job near the Navy Yard, the boss told me to try some of this popcorn that they get from a guy once a week. The commute is terrible, but I am still here - thanks in part to Mike the popcorn guy. In the office, we get Pepper Pop and White Cheddar. The Pepper Pop is addictive, and the mood in the office is noticeably different when we run out. Sometimes I take home a bag of butter topped. It is a family favorite. Yes yes yes! Amazing popcorn. Fresh and full of flavor! Remember to arrive early because the lines during lunchtime gets really crazy. This is a good sign meaning the popcorn is that good. The old popcorn from the previous business day is sold cheaper than the one he makes right away. I would personally pay few bucks more and buy a freshly made. Best popcorn I ever had. I never thought I'd be writing about a popcorn stand. One of the things I miss about working in DC is getting popcorn from this guy. The stuff is addictive as hell. I remember him outside the DOT/NASSIF building on 7th street and seeing a huge line of people waiting for popcorn! It wasn't uncommon to see people buying 4-5 bags and bringing them back for their coworkers. Which made it annoying for those of us that had to wait longer because of them. But I digress.
