Toasting our evening with a few glasses Alsace fizz - delicious.

From the witty and eccentric French waitress, to the complimentary crusty bread, to the steaks, to the cheese, to the absolutely delicious Vouvray the uber trendy sommelier recommended. We. Just. Loved. It! So French you may start wondering if you accidentally hopped aboard The Eurostar. Tables slightly to close together, though they manage to make this feel cosy instead of clumsy. Simple tablesettings with luxurious starched linen napkins - massively underestimated! Who doesn't love a proper napkin? Crusty bread arrives not long after you do and is swiftly followed by a tasty and unpretentious amuse bouche, which will keep you entertained while sipping an aperitif. The menu is incredibly well thought out and a perfect balance of different meats along with interesting fish and veggie options. Sustainability also plays a part with the menu detailing the origin of key menu items and a brief bit of info on the importance of seasonality. Their talented kitchen team work with whole animals and are trained to break down carcasses and learn to make use of every part. This is great for small holdings for whom it is much better to sell a whole animal than just the desirable cuts. The food is just brilliant. Generous portions of rich, classic cooking, all tasting spectacular. I don't know what else to say on it without sounding like a broken record. De-frickin-liscious! The closest thing Edinburgh has to France.

I am I have to say a little bit in love with this place, lots of interesting points made below but I have to say i have eaten here now three times and I think its superb. A real taste of France in our little city. On my most recent visit Steph and I had a superb 3 course meal with some of the houses very own table wine. For starters I had the filo Camembert with beetroot salad. These are flavors which I can confirm go well together, really delicious, the quality of the cheese really made the dish with the flavor coming through strongly. For mains I went for the rack of lamb, lamb is something I think I do very well at home so for me to be happy this was going to have to be very very good! It was a risk but sa it turned out one well worth taking. Pink lamb, rich sauce with nice sides.......happy JD!!! I didn't need a desert.......bum lets be honest I had one :) crepes in a chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream... simple ...tasty... opulent.....delicious!!!! Very Happy Jd!!!

L'escargot Bleu was voted the best newcomer of the year in 2009 due to the quality of its service and the range of the ingredients used in the food. It's contemporary French cuisine made from locally sourced Scottish ingredients. They also sell horse meat. Now, plenty of people think it's some kind of heinous crime to eat horse meat because they 'like horses'. So what if they like horses? Does that mean they'd happily eat a chicken, pig or cow because they don't like them? Of course not, they just don't fancy the idea of eating a half-domesticated animal. Man up! Everything on the menu is pretty expensive (especially the horsemeat), but I had the coq au vin which was chicken in a rich red wine sauce. It was delicious, but cost about £13. I would certainly come here again as it offers an interesting menu and great service, although the prices do match this quality.

Originally, we had planned to head to a cheese place, I can;t remember the name, but it was shut, it was raining, we were hungry, and this place looked good. We were seated immediately, by friendly french staff, not a scottish accent in earshot within the servers, which threw us right off! The decor was lovely, wood, cotton, linen, adorable vintage posters, and bottles and bottles of wine on show, we ordered a red, Malbec if I remember rightly, and it was lovely. I'm no wine critic, and I've stolen someone I used to know's philosophy on wine matching; "Do you like the wine?" Definitely, yes... "Do, you like the food?" Here? Even more than the wine! "Then it matches!" And the food! We were brought choices of fresh bread, which smelt amazing and were hard to pick from! Yum And we ordered up. My picks were; Savoury cheese mille fueille (autocorrect harassed me on that one!) Black pudding parmentier Tarte Au Chocolat, with creme anglaise and salted caramel sauce. My starter was gorgeous, the pastry itself was even rich and cheesy, it was a little bit of a wobbly stack, packed with caramelised onion chutney, it was lovely, and hard to eat politely, without scattering shards of flaky pastry across the oh so french striped tablecloth. My main, I am actually going to attempt to cook for my partner next week when he visits, it was so good. Very hot, so don't dive in too eager, but it was seasoned perfectly. I find that often, already very herby/peppery things such as haggis and black pudding have too much thrown in with them. And although black pudding is quite a dry thing in itself, this was wonderfully moist. I'm not always a chocolate pudding person, but I was drawn in by the creme anglaise and salted caramel, it was so lovely, rich and dar without being bitter, the anglaise was perfect, and not over sweet with the salted caramel on top. Everything about this place was lovely, and I'm not surprised they have michelin stars displayed on the door. I will be back!

L'Escargot Bleu delivers. In my five visits to this restaurant the consistency of the food, service and charming ambiance is its formula for success. Dinner with colleagues tonight and the restaurant served a superb meal. The steamed mussels were tender and delicious with a fresh taste of the sea with cream and garlic. I ordered a steak entrecôte served medium rare. It was a generous steak rather than a paper thin one. The meat was well cooked with a little get crop char. The jus complemented the steak. Even the purple potatoes and the seasonal vegetable were delicious. For dessert I tried the year old plums soaked in Bas vArmagnac syrup. Different but good finish to a wonderful meal. Highly recommend this restaurant. The sister restaurant, L'Escargot Blanc serves more traditional dishes like Cassoulet. Will try it next time.

The seating was comfy, and the restaurant was clean and bright, with several excellent options. The restaurant is a higher end, but they have a lovely lunch/bar menu they allowed us to order from even though it was dinner time. My husband opted for a burger, and I got the Caesar salad. We also had breakfast here every morning. It was delicious, with so many options. If you have the time to order something off the menu, I'd suggest an omelet.

It was beautiful indeed and the service was good. At first glance at the menu I was a little disappointed because I was in the mood for brunch type of food, but settled on the sourdough bread with crab. The crab was smothered in butter, but tasted so good...and Edinburgh had some of the best sourdough bread I've experienced! The menu was a bit sophisticated for our teens, but there was a kids menu for them to order from. They enjoyed an order of fish sticks and french fries. If I were to come back I'd probably go for dinner over lunch since I think their menu is better suited for that, but overall was a lovely meal.

We were finally taken in by the two course for 18.95 set menu as neither of us was ready for a three course ensemble and the price compared to much less renowned restaurants in sleepy Oxford. I was a little concerned about how pretentious the place would be, as this is the Scotch Malt Whisky Society after all, with a private members club upstairs. However, the interior was quite modest, with an eclectic collection of modern art work and open curtains allowing for just the right amount of natural light coming through. We went around 6:15 so it was quite quiet when we arrived. The staff was a little bit somber and standoffish but the service was reasonably quick. The food was actually quite impeccable in terms of quality with seasonal items dominating the dishes. My first course was a thick and creamy Pumpkin and Parmesan soup which was more like a smooth puree with pickled pumpkin along with bits of hazelnuts and porcini mushrooms. My lovely boyfriend went for the soused mackeral with white crab meat, carrots, and dill. He reported the mackeral as being fantastic. For the main we both had the Serrano ham with sweet potato puree and a crunchy blackened fig which complemented the crisp ham exterior perfectly. The glass of white wine we had was glorious as well with the ham. Overall a well-thought out menu and an atmosphere to which I couldn't in good conscience give 3 stars. Although everything was truly delicious, the portions were almost appalling. If we hadn't been lured out by a friend for an impromptu appetizer right beforehand, we would have been left almost completely starving. Slight less empty space on my main dish would have left everyone satisfied.

In terms of service, atmosphere, and food, that's exactly what we got. My wife and I both had 5-course tasting menus. As a vegetarian, I was especially pleased they were not only able to accommodate my diet, but do so in a spectacular way. The experience was opulent and comfortable from the moment we walked in. We were seated at a very comfortable, spacious round table, next to each other with a view of the rest of the dining room. Kind of felt like royalty. With such a nice, upscale place, it's easy for the atmosphere and staff interaction to feel overly important and stuffy. Not so here, though...all of the staff we interacted with, from the host to the sommelier to our server, as well as the person who brought our food, were all comfortable and fun. The sommelier was particularly engaging and gave us a nice sense of him as a human who cared deeply about what he was presenting to us. The food was outasite...especially as a vegetarian, to be so thoughtfully and well taken care of was fantastic. Everything was beautiful and delicious...the courses were not too large...so the meal, despite being 5 courses (plus lovely amuse-bouche canapés), was designed to be finished...and finish it I did. (Not to mention a healthy portion of the seeded bread and butter they brought. We added on the Balmoral honey dessert as they have bees on the roof of the hotel and the honey couldn't be any more local than that. We wished they'd brought one for us to share, but they brought us 2 separate ones, which was more than we needed after 2 five-course meals, which already came with dessert. There were also many solicitations of add-ons- macarons, after-dinner desserts, drinks, and cheeses...it did feel a tiny bit like they were looking for every opportunity to add items to our bill. Also, tiny disappointment...we had mentioned during the reservation that it was our anniversary dinner, and when seated, they did ask us about that to confirm...but at no point during the meal after that did they acknowledge that in any way. Besides that, the overall experience was fantastic, indulgent, and delicious. Highly recommended extremely fine dining experience in Edinburgh in an historic building.
