This was the most amazing meal we ate in three weeks in Italy -- and we ate loads of great food. L'Evangelista is a vey upscale restaurant on a quiet street a block off the main pedestrian thoroughfare. While it follows the form of apertivo, primi, segundi, dolci, this is not traditional Italian cuisine but what I've seen termed as "Italian contemporary cuisine." That means world class, innovative food. And we loved it. Simone Ferrigno, the manager, greeted us when we arrived and seated us at an elegantly laid out table. We ordered wine and our food, and the show began with beautiful dish after beautiful dish. And fabulous wines. We chatted with the German couple at the next table who had ordered the vegan tasting menu and they were in heaven. Alas I cannot for the life of me find the receipt with the names of the dishes we ordered. If I find it, I'll update my review. I'll just say this, exquisite food, world-class service in a beautiful ambience. After we had paid our bill (thank goodness the dollar is up relative to the Euro) and we started walking away, Simone ran after us to ask how our experience was and to thank us for our patronage. Note: A reservation is essential at L'Evangelista. I just noticed that Yelp has two Euro symbols to indicate the price is moderate. I'd actually give it four Euro symbols. One of the best dinners I've ever had in Verona! We didn't have a reservation, but we were seated right away on the patio. From start to finish, every dish was amazing. Our waiter was extremely nice, helpful, and generous. We were treated to so many additional items that we didn't order or pay for, so we were extremely happy and grateful. Recommended by Rick Steve's guidebook. (With good reason.) This ended up being our first serious sit-down meal of the trip, due to a reservation snafu in Milan. Enoteca con Grande is an exceptional restaurant. We had a nice Valpolicella red from among their titanic wine selection. They served us some savory gnocchi, as well as a delectable pasta amuse bouche. This was followed with beef cheeks in wine sauce, which were delicious and as easy to cut as warm butter. Depends on what time you go, food service can be very long wait. If you don't want long wait, you can try to ask the meal to come out fast as possible to avoid any frustration. Food was great. I love that they serve a basket of warm bread and keep refilling with each dish when it's served. Complimentary pieces of parmesan as welcome plate from the kitchen is nice start. Gnocchi was good but quite different from what i had all over the world. I felt the gnocchi was overcooked as it was baked and therefore, this isn't my recommendation. Pumpkin ravioli is highly recommended. Wine list is big but a bit more pricier than other restaurants nearby. Maybe because i was alone or ordered quite a lot, the owner man gave me a free glass of grappa (or lemoncello but i chose grappa) with a plate of cookie. OUTSTANDING! Quite simply one of the best and most memorable meal experiences we've had. And that comes from a couple that eats out a lot. The food most importantly was outstanding, while the service and ambience were both on point. We had the octopus salad along with the ricotta and truffle oil gnocchi to start, followed with the beef cheek for our main with a few culinary surprises along the way. With 2 glasses of wine the final bill was €100 which was very reasonable for truly exceptional food and fine dining. The service was excellent - attentive, warm and friendly - and the restaurant is nestled away in an alley way just a stone throw from the ancient arena. This meal made our Verona trip. They will recommend wine by the glass for each of your orders and they were spot on in their recommendations. The wait staff was excellent. This is a first class operation. He clearly loves his work-- the passion is evident through his fun and engaging personality AND the pride he takes in watching others experience joy through the food he brings out. This place was moderately priced for such high level taste and presentation. Everything we enjoyed exceeded our expectations. The location was just a few steps away from the Piazza Bra and Arena, yet it felt intimate and local. Simone was the best part though. You will love this place. Recommended by Rick Steves guidebook as a place to go to get enthusiastic food and wine pairings. We love food and wine pairings so we enthusiastically reserved a table for a family of 3, and asked for wine pairings with the tasting menu. The tasting menu is reasonably priced at €50 (not €40 like in the guidebook, but with the euro at $1.14, it's still the same as €40 was three years ago). The wine charge, however, was a shock. I didn't ask how much the pairings would be and found they were charged at full price by the glass, including two glasses of Amarone at €24 each. Total came out to €260 for two adults for food and wine, plus one 8 year old for pasta and a dessert. This was €60 more than I had expected or budgeted for the meal, entirely because the wine alone was €130. Overall, this was a mixed experience. I found the restaurant overall heavily reliant on cheese in the dishes for flavor. The antipasti included hunks of parmesan with balsamic reduction, as well as a plate of mortadella with truffles. It was served with an eggplant dish with, of course, lots of cheese. The pasta course was Canneloni made with Fontina and mushrooms - again, heavy on the cheese. The main was beef cheeks with an Amarone reduction, with thinly sliced, crispy acorn squash and bacon potatoes. My son ordered the gnocchi, which was stuffed with ricotta and served in cream sauce, which even he said was too heavy (he ended up stealing our beef cheeks). Dessert was Panna cotta, lemon meringue tart, and lemon sorbet for our son. (The desserts were excellent). And the whole meal was served with a lot of bread - six rolls plus crackers. I appreciate restaurants that create an experience for their customers. But the way this evening went made me feel less like it was an experience created for us, and more that we should have checked to see how much that experience was going to cost when we gave the proprietor too much free rein to create it. The wines were all good, of course, and i do not feel we were defrauded so much as taken advantage of. In hindsight, I should have asked "quanta costa?" for the pairings during the meal. I now regret not saying that, even though i find talking about price slightly tacky. End result is that I respect the proprietors enthusiasm and delight in sharing the wines, but the end price made it feel more like an act he put on to justify the excessive amount and cost of wine. Instead of a lovely memory, I feel he took advantage of Americans who don't speak the language and are too shy to ask about pricing. Perhaps the guidebook recommendation has made it too easy to do so. read more

Verona is a gorgeous place. We booked here as others did based on recommendation from Rick Steves .. I'd say that much like other places we've been that have high profile recommendations (Anthony Bourdain, etc), it didn't live up to our expectations. Service was friendly, if not hit or miss .. our kids' drinks didn't arrive until halfway through the meal. That was after we asked 3+ more times for them. Wine list is varied, but they didn't have the bottle we wanted .. brought out something "similar" that we didn't find to be similar at all. They did discount it a bit, which we appreciated. We ate all over the menu .. no food dance to be seen. Most expensive meal we had this trip to Italy, but not the best. read more

This was a nice restaurant with high quality food, a hidden gem in Verone although it is so close to the arena. We tried two different pasta dishes which were very nice. The textures were very pleasing, well balanced flavors. Light and fresh, perfect for our lunch on a very hot day. The staff were very accommodating, starting the meal by serving us freshly baked bread with locally made olive oil. The inside of the very small restaurant was decorated in a quite unique style, which I found charming. I liked the menu and think the food was priced reasonably. Tucked away in a cute little corner off of Piazza Bra, Cangrande is a hidden gem. A beautiful menu that serves those who love fish (we had the Polpo -awesome octopus!) and meat (the bresaola was fantastic!). The wine list is extensive and reasonable for any budget, and the service is friendly and personable. And the grappa?!?!!! A lovely way to end a fantastic meal! WOW... I was looking for Enoteca Cangrande's contact information because a relative is traveling to Italy for the first time. I came across their Yelp and NO ONE reviewed it. How can this be? This place is epic. I first met Juliano, the owner, on a trip to Italy on a historic car rally. To begin with, everyone is in great spirits and we were all looking forward to a wonderful week We were all summoning our Italian heritage and looking for any reason to inhale the beauty and essence of Italy. We were told by a close friend who is a local about the story of Juliano and his families history in Verona. This restaurant, for Juliano, was simply a passion project. You can see smell and taste the passion he wants to share with all who come within 20 feet of this restaurant. It is located on a very unassuming back alley behind all of the action. Outside he has an old wine barrel with finished bottles of wine which after their use were repurposed as candle holders which then flowed over on to the wine barrel. You just have to see it. Upstairs is where he keeps his wine cellar. If you have a large party, 8 or more he will seat you in there. The food is spectacular! Juliano finds all local purveyors and goes to local farms. He hunts down the finest ingredients and just marries the flavors to perfection. When you're done you can go visit Juliet Capulet's house and leave a little note in her wall. Its supposed to bring great luck for your love life. You can see the exact spot where romeo serenaded her. This restaurant is magical and so is Verona... a must go to on the way to Venice. read more

I wish they had a table wine or house wine though, the wines were all quite expensive (for a college student) and I was hoping there would be some cheap table wine we could order. The food at Cangrande was ok but the overall cost was high. My biggest objection was to the 10 Euro Coperto (cover charge) that was added to our bill for two diners (wife and I). The wine prices were also much higher that average for the same quality. Cover charges are not unusual in Italian tourist areas but the 10 Euro was excessive. read more
