My wife and I went for dinner on a Sunday night in April. We were staying nearby, and wanted to splurge on a really nice meal in the heart of Provence. L'Oustau de Baumaniere was highly recommended by my stepmother (who had dined there many years ago), so we made a reservation online and planned our visit.
There's private parking on the property, and when we arrived the sun was still setting over the valley. The staff invited us to have a drink outside on the patio before going inside for dinner, which was great. Champagne service from the cart, along with a few hors d'oeuvres, until we were seated inside for our first course.
We ordered the Tradition/Evolution menu, which was officially five courses, but of course ended up being more like nine with the amuse bouche, the tea service, the petit fours, etc. Each dish was beautifully assembled, each with its own sauce, and tasted amazing. The food really was excellent and beautifully-presented. The pork dish was particularly interesting, with a few small potatoes baked in a pouch of lard, something I hadn't seen before (and, obviously, lard is delicious).
The wine list is epic, and there are some extremely pricey wines on their list (like, five digits pricey). I asked the sommelier to recommend a red Burgundy under 100 Euro, and he suggested a bottle that went nicely with our meal.
I think the cheese course was probably the most impressive part of the meal, with a huge brass cart, the waiter asking whether we prefer cow or goat cheese, strong or mild, soft or hard, and then recommending a few things to try, along with a little story to go with each one.
My wife is vegetarian, and although I'd checked ahead of time to be sure there would be a vegetarian option, the waiter was very helpful in explaining ahead of time what would be on her menu, which was especially nice. The vegetarian menu was just as impressive as the regular menu, too.
It was a special meal, and one I'll remember for a long time. Definitely expensive, and we'll probably only go once, but I think worthwhile. read more
