Benches dot the perimeter if sitting on grass sounds like a nightmare (it would be if I didn't have my trusty travel blanket with me.) The dirt areas combined with no colorful flowers in bloom make the park feel somewhat drab. Some nuisances to contend with: bees (so many bees) & aggressive peddlers of everything from alcohol to cheap souvenirs. Though there are far prettier parks in Paris, having the iconic structure seemingly within reach is the draw here. Check it out once; it is worth being on your Paris itinerary, especially if it's your first time here.

It reminded me of Rome's Villa Borghese and does in fact have Italian roots. The garden was built by a Medici, back in the 1600s. We were there for a little over an hour, my family, my brother's family, and my friend who lives in Paris. We'd agreed to meet up in the garden, and I figured out when we got there that we'd have to get more specific. We entered from opposite ends and converged at a spectacular central fountain, where dozens of children were racing toy boats using sticks that they thrust in the water. (My children wanted the sticks, and I declined to rent the boats just so they could thrash each other.) We walked around for a bit and ended up at the Ludo Jardin, a large contained playground with lovely equipment and an idyllic atmosphere. There was a small fee for entry, not ideal for a quick visit, but definitely worthwhile. Our three-year-old walked in and went straight for a sprinkler, where he spent the next half hour getting absolutely soaked. Our six-year-old did a little more exploring, though to be honest, I didn't pay close attention to what he was doing. After a while, both boys noticed ice cream for sale and asked for a treat. We indulged them and watched them slather themselves with chocolate ice cream and rainbow popsicle. When it was time to go, our three-year-old objected vigorously, insisting, "I didn't get to play!" He meant that he'd only splashed around in the sprinklers and had a popsicle, and hadn't explored the depths of the playground. I knew the feeling--I'd experienced it myself leaving the d'Orsay earlier that day, all those paintings and whole exhibit halls I'd missed. I do hope we get to come back to the Luxembourg Garden.

Besides the layout and beauty of the Garden itself, it is a wonderful way to experience the softer side of Paris. Despite April overcast and rainy weather, walking through the Park was uplifting as always. Tulips greeted us when we entered through the Gay-Lussac entrance. Once in the Park, we found more flowers and trees in bloom. Beyond Les Voiliers du Luxembourg -- an octagonal fountain for sail boats at the focal center if the Gaeden -- we walked through a canopy formed by rows of chestnut trees. It was great staying within a few blocks of Le Jardin du Luxembourg and visiting daily.

No one in their right mind, or for that matter - in any state of mind - should ever visit Paris…read morewithout spending at least a few hours wandering in and around one of the world's greatest Parks, the Bois De Boulogne. A Parisian will tell you it is, in fact, The World's Ultimate Public Park. To appreciate this incredible landscape you have to imagine Great Richmond Park in London because it is just as vast and it's beginnings go back to the oak forest of Rouvray in the 8th century. Therefore, in anyone's terms, this is an ancient part of Paris. During The Hundred Years War, the forest became the haunt of highwaymen, robbers and scoundrels. The troops of the Duke of Burgundy burned part of this Forest - which proves that vandalism is not just a British Phenomena - Then under Louis XI, the estate, now called the Bois de Boulogne, was reforested and two roads were opened through it. As we all know now Louis X1 was not always vicious and cunning, but gave some vague and passing thought to his people. This beautiful forest is full of activities on weekends. A joggers paradise as well as biking, boat rowing, and where picnics are held. During the summer season the Park also holds a 3 day weekend party in July with over 50 bands and singers. Similar in many ways to the Glastonbury festival in Somerset, UK. My advice though, that while the park's glory deserves high praise as a magnificent forest set in the centre of the great Metropolis of Paris, at night, it has a history more in tune with sexual shenanigans - not always without severe damage to one's wallet or one's 'chosen' sexuality. The aristocracy in the 18th Century found a more fun and sensual use for the Park which is illustrated in my video below. Bois de Boulogne is two and half larger than Central Park in New York and more than three times…read morelarger than Hyde Park in London. These "woods" located on the edge of the 16 arr. are a never ending source of entertainment, activities and fitness opportunities. Must confess, however, that most of the time spent in this park has been watching the bicycles races around the velodrome. Always dreaming of one day bringing my own bike and testing my legs against these dudes, good times have been had, and I am sure good times will be had. Probably one of the biggest landmarks within the "woods" is the Hippodrome de Longchamp which in itself deserves its own review, but for now, suffice it to known that it is the inspiration to the Longchamp fashion brand. Word of advice ! beware, at night, this place becomes a red light district.

If it were my birthday I would want to come here,…read moreif I were getting married I would want to come here, no matter the celebration I would always choose the Parc de Bagatelle. If I could live here I'd move in a heartbeat! I came here with my two housemates last year and we had a magical time. We took a picnic blanket and spent the day exploring the gardens which didn't stop surprising us every few minutes with new corners to uncover. Dotted with pagodas and peacocks its impossible not to fall under its charm. It's a little off the beaten track; I managed to live in the 16th arrondissement for a year without realising it was home to this hidden gem. Nonetheless its absolutely worth the little extra effort!

The question is whether you'd want to come back as a more seasoned Francophile tourist. Despite being constantly overcrowded, the answer is definitely yes. This has been the definitive green space that has epitomized classic garden architecture since the 16th century. The fountains, geometric layout, the Musee de l'Orangerie, and ornate statues by the likes of Rodin and Maillol give it the traditional French style we come to expect in Paris. It's also an unquestionable hub for social activity with playgrounds and sailboats on the Grand Bassin. Unfortunately, Jamie W and I weren't here during one of the seasonal events like the summer Fête des Tuileries when a carnival midway is set up, or Paris Fashion Week when runways are built and celebrities flock in frocks, or the Christmas market. On our first visit, we accidentally stood on some grass for a photo, but were gently told by the park attendents that we were not supposed to. Once these graciouus ladies realized we were from outside of France, they permitted my wife stand on the grass for our first photo is Paris. What a Joy!!!
