It is on the beach, and you get a small complimentary breakfast each morning. There a couple (mostly friendly) dogs on the property, in addition to a couple birds that frequent the dining tables. As for the humans, the staff is happy to cater to any requests and willing to help with general topics that come up during your stay. You can also use complimentary sunscreen at the check-in area. The only reason I'd knock it a star is that I think the staff could be more helpful when it comes to very basic questions about Tulum. For example, getting around the city via taxi requires some negotiation and predetermined knowledge about the way taxi drivers rip off tourists. There is also a colectivo available. However, when we inquired about this, the staff claimed ignorance and did not give us this information (kickbacks are common in Tulum...be ready to protect yourself against scams).

It was cozy, heartfelt, and filled with the kind of charm you can’t quite buy off a shelf. For eight years, that place brought us so much joy—and let’s be honest, a fair share of learning curves too. But eventually, we outgrew it. We knew we wanted something more: space, sunshine, and maybe a pool where folks could unwind after a day of snorkeling or just sip a cocktail and watch the world go by. So when we found a larger property tucked away on 15th Avenida, it felt right. We reimagined what a boutique stay in Cozumel could be and created Stingray Villa—a mini resort with four Airbnb units all wrapped around a central pool. Simple. Elegant. Relaxed. Fast forward to today, and we’ve had the absolute pleasure of welcoming guests from over 100 countries. It’s been quite the ride. And you know what? If you're going to stay here, make sure you let them know when you're going to arrive as there doesn't seem to be a front desk. I called when we got there and we waited for about 10 minutes until Genevieve got there. Not a problem though because I do understand it's not really a traditional hotel. The grounds themselves are beautiful. There's lots of green space, and there's also a little pond with two turtles in it. Hopefully someone is feeding the turtles because when we were there we gave them like 2 whole avocados over the span of 3 or 4 days - them seemed famished. The pool is OUTSTANDING. It's not a traditional pool, there's not really much space to sunbathe, but it felt SO good after a long, hot day at the beach or walking around town. Plus it overlooks the ocean. Our favorite part of the place was the rooftop. Stunning views. Unfortunately the room we stayed in had window that overlooked a tree and a wall. There was a little window at the top of that wall, and no curtains on it, which made for a daily wake up time of whenever the sun came up. BUT, their neighbors started building a wall right outside that window. The stairs they were using to get to their roof were right outside that window, and any of the workers could've looked in our room, and directly down into the bathroom/toilet. I let management know and they came not more than two hours later to measure the window and make a mesh curtain for it. I was VERY pleased with how quickly they reacted to my email. It's unfortunate (and not Layla's fault) that there was a wall built, but I suppose that solved the sunrise wake up every morning. Other than that the room (selva) was nice. It had a little cooktop, sink, microwave, refrigerator, and coffee maker. The refrigerator froze almost everything we put in there, and we were unable to mess with the temperature. They had dish soap, hand soap, and I think body wash as well. Beach towels were provided though they're old and stained. The pillows were mish mash as were the pillow cases. I thought they had a restaurant and yoga classes and a salon, but everything was closed. Overall I'd recommend this place. It's a wonderfully affordable option and the entire staff is nice (I think we interacted with 5 of them; they'd come during the daytime). The views can't be beat, and the quietness of the location really amplified the charm that is Puerto Morelos!!!!

We come to Layla guest house not just for the property but for the food and activities (sunset…read moreyoga, movie night, music, massages, salon, etc ...). We love this place and consider it our mothership in Puerto Morelos. They serve Bibimbap which is the best we've ever had! This says a lot as we live in San Francisco where there are lots of Korean restaurants. Massages by Marcos are the greatest! Noemi and Steve provide great haircuts and salon services. Jime and Lucio, who are the managers, come up with various music and night activities. Brunch with Jime and Gloria Casanova is very entertaining! Thank you to all the staff of Layla Guesthouse.

Very nice little hotel in a quaint Mayan town. Very recently built or remodeled. We found Roger…read moredowntown at the paper store. He is the owner and a very nice man. We stayed here with our kids in two rooms in December. Only one room has air-conditioning but he gave us a hammock for the other room. The only real knock is there is no hot water but it is so humid that we don't miss it. We are the only ones here tonight. We had a very quiet and relaxing time sitting on the patio.

Absolute worst Hostel experience of my life. Do not stay here! I was assaulted by another hostel…read moreguest who sucker punched me and ended up knocking my two front teeth inwards. It was a completely unprovoked attack. The "experience" staff Yazmin and Romina completely failed to follow any proper protocol. They didn't call the police. They didn't call me emergency medical care. Instead, they left me to bleed all night by myself until I could figure out where to get emergency medical and dental services the next morning. Keep in mind it was also my birthday! Even though the guy who attacked me was also an American tourist, the hostel refused to release his name to me! He checked in on October 29th and they had all of his information and yet they still refused to give it to me so I could pursue charges. Cozme the manager said he would look into it and just kept pushing it off every day on purpose. Then they treated me like I was some outcast. Completely ignoring me and shunning me until I checked out on November 3rd. I had to get a emergency flight back home. I am currently undergoing medical and dental appointments to try and save my teeth. I may have to get fake implant teeth now and I'm an actor in New York City. Absolutely unacceptable behavior and failure to assist their guests in great times of need and emergency situations. That is not how you treat your human family. Hostel is a joke, pretty much run by "grown-up" children. They only care about partying and scamming guests for tours that they charge extra for to make money. Also, no hot water. Bathrooms that flood with peoples urine and other human waste. I wish I would have never stayed here. Completely ruined my 30th birthday trip and I'm now looking at months of medical and dental treatments.

A lot of folks were saying 'Como Estas' - I appreciated this culture. Very friendly staff here - I liked them all (most of them (I'm kidding around)). There was a daily excursion to meet other folks. we played Uno at the cenote (even though there was some people not saying uno when they had one card left, but it's fine, I'm over it now). One guy even had a blue card and said 'blue-No', I didn't get the joke and I still don't. At the same cenote, there was a man who told us that if we jumped into the water w sunblock on, he would be mad & would sniff it out. I tested the theory and put a bit on my left thumb. He smelled it! Always listen to authorities in Mexico! Especially when you're extorted by the polica for not wearing a helmet on a moped. I told them I spoke English but they kept politely speaking Spanish - way to be patriotic guys! ¿Que Paso?

There was several pools but our favorite one was the lively one (they have quite ones too). The bartenders remembered us and remembered our drinks. Arturo was great! We had a Junior suite with a swim up pool and the workers came out every day to clean it. Our concierge Luis was amazing ! He made sure we had a special stay. We were celebrating our anniversary and he made sure our room was decorated with rose petals and fresh flowers. I highly recommend this resort! Ask for Luis!

Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya is a beautiful resort with gorgeous grounds and a wonderful atmosphere…read more Unfortunately, several aspects of our stay fell short of what we expected from a luxury, five-diamond property. Shortly after checking in, we were asked to meet with a "VIP" manager. What sounded like a brief welcome meeting turned into a sales presentation for a vacation membership. We were told it would involve approximately 90 minutes over breakfast, and we agreed because of the offered incentives, including $500 in spa credit. Instead, the presentation lasted more than three hours and involved repeated attempts to persuade us to purchase. While we understood that the resort markets these programs, the length and sales pressure should have been explained more clearly. Losing most of a vacation morning was frustrating. Our room was another disappointment. We had booked a partial ocean-view room, but the view consisted entirely of trees. At our first dinner, we were sixth in line. The guests ahead of us were seated near the oceanfront windows, while we were taken to a table in the back near the kitchen and salad bar, despite many open tables in the more desirable section. On its own, this might have seemed minor, but it contributed to our overall impression. The spa experience was also inconsistent. The resort did honor the $500 credit, which we appreciated. However, during our first visit, we watched other guests being escorted to the locker rooms and given robes and slippers, while we were taken directly to the waiting area in our resort clothes. We were not offered access to the locker rooms, steam room, showers, or other amenities. After our massages, we were simply escorted out. The massages were fine, but the overall experience did not feel comparable to what other guests received. We raised our concerns with a front desk manager, who listened and made a genuine effort to improve our stay. He offered either a room with the partial ocean view we had booked or an upgrade to a swim-out suite in the more convenient central area. We chose the swim-out suite and appreciated the upgrade. He also provided a complimentary beach cabana. My second spa visit was much better. I was properly welcomed and offered access to the amenities. The spa manager personally apologized for what he called a miscommunication during my first visit and gave me a gift bag of spa products. I appreciated the gesture and his effort to address the issue. After speaking with management, we were also instructed to tell our concierge where we planned to dine each evening. From then on, we were seated in better areas of the restaurants. While we appreciated the improved treatment, it reinforced our feeling that the service we initially received was not the same as what other guests were receiving. The food throughout the resort was just okay. Nothing was terrible, but it did not meet our expectations for a property at this price and reputation. We have stayed at several other highly rated all-inclusive resorts in the region, many of which were less expensive and not marketed as five-diamond properties. Based on our experiences, we would rank nearly all of them above Secrets Akumal in terms of overall service, dining, and consistency. As an LGBTQ couple, we were also left questioning whether we were treated differently. Secrets advertises itself as gay-friendly, which helped us feel comfortable choosing the resort. I cannot say with certainty why our experiences differed from those of other guests, and I do not want to accuse individual employees of intentional discrimination. However, the repeated differences we noticed--from restaurant seating to the spa experience--left us wondering whether being a same-sex couple played a role. No guest should leave a luxury resort questioning whether they received the same level of welcome and service as others. To the resort's credit, management responded thoughtfully once we raised our concerns. The room upgrade, beach cabana, improved restaurant seating, second spa experience, apology, and gift were meaningful gestures. However, it was disappointing that we had to complain before receiving the level of hospitality we expected from the beginning. This was an important trip for us, and I proposed to my partner during our stay. I had hoped Secrets Akumal might become a special place we would return to for anniversaries. Although the resort is beautiful and management made a sincere effort to improve our experience, the inconsistent service, disappointing food, lengthy sales presentation, and concerns about unequal treatment left us unwilling to return. Secrets Akumal has many positives, but the setting alone was not enough to overcome the problems we experienced. We will always remember getting engaged there, but we will choose another resort for future celebrations.
