The reason why there is a waiting list to get in is because this school makes learning fun. Well, fun is not the right word, I suppose interdisciplinary is more appropriate. My daughter who is in first grade loves school to the point that she doesn't like weekends. I am hoping this attitude continues throughout her scholastic life (it was not the case with me!). Parental involvement is in every aspect of the school, so if you do not wish to get involved with your child's school, then this is not the school for you. At least two hours per week is required in the lower grades and I have been told that as the kids get older, it is not as necessary. Also there is a mandatory monthly parents meeting that averages about 1 - 2 hours. Fieldtrips are about twice a month, sometimes more. Again, parents volunteer to be a part of the fieldtrips as there is not school bus to take kids to the outings. However, the kids absolutely LOVE IT! Orangevale Open (OV) is considered to be a performing arts school. Kids can participate in drama and at one point there was a choir. I don't know if it will be coming back or not. The students are assigned a "buddy" or mentor starting from Kindergarten. Wow. What an interesting concept to learn! And the older kids get to see what it is like to tutor younger kids. Whenever I tell other parents about the school, the first question they ask is, "Is it a private school?". Technically it is not, but we pay on average $60 a month or so for all the field trips and activities. Very inexpensive when you compare to private tuition costs.

No one is a number here. Faculty and staff know students well and are very invested in students' intellectual and emotional growth. The school has a wonderful theater program and everyone who wishes to participate may. This is also the case for all other extracurricular offerings -- Speech and Debate, Athletics, etc. I don't think enough people are aware this wonderful school is here, and that needs to change. This is the kind of school that changes and enriches your life.

Instead of the usual school supply list, we were asked to bring donations for the classroom. For school lunch she was given the option of a school lunch or to bring her own and we love packing her lunch! Her class of 26 students had so many fun themed days, our daughter's favorite, jammie and stuffed animal day! Always lots of art work brought home and I have them to thank for helping our daughter make so many great friends, encouraging her to read, count and write! And of course you cannot forget music time, PE, recess and free time! They even went on a field trip to the Sacramento Zoo! We especially want to give a shout out to the middle school team... what a dynamic trio they are :) Here is a little excerpt of an email we sent them personally: "While it may not seem that you are doing anything above what you normally do in a day I want you to know that for us, as a family, you are going above and beyond. Teaching is not just delivery of content, teaching is compassion, empathy and sometimes its talking nervous moms and dads off of a ledge (speaking for myself especially). This is not a school, but more like an overpriced and unqualified daycare. When I informed the administration of my complaints, they proceeded to defend their inadequate staff due to nepotism and did not refund my money for the month my kids did not attend due to bullying and poor teaching conditions. The elementary program has one teacher, Ms. Sangeetha, who encourages bullying, shame and treats her students with humiliation, as described by my 6 year old daughter at the time (she is 7 now and has vivid memories and stories of the terrible situation at that school). There is no learning, no homework or evidence that your child is even learning. I also reported Ms Sangeetha's inappropriate behavior of inviting my daughter on field trips without parental consent and not scheduling any meetings with us as parents to review my daughter's progress. My second child was in the toddler children's house with Ms Eva, who from my understanding, is not a Montessori trained teacher but rather simply the mother of another student in Ms Sangeetha's class. I reported Ms Eva and her assistant as being cold and ineffective. My 4 year old son informed us that both teachers left the children alone for long periods of time. He had a horrible experience and felt very neglected. He had a fall and giant knot/bump on his head on his first week there. Ms Eva also was an emotional wreck, who appeared to be crying on a daily basis. The staff that is hired here is questionable. There are "field trips" planned without parent consent or permission slips. My daughter had an accident at school and soiled herself and not one staff member alerted us or helped her. Our experience at this school was horrible and I am considering to take legal action based on the money that was taken from me and the neglect faced by my kids.

They don't just educate but they genuinely love and care for them as if they were their own family. They are completely dedicated and having two children go through the program has only reinforced how great the environment is. The Montessori approach combined with Spanish immersion has given both our daughters such a strong foundation.
