While they basically only have hybrid bikes (no road bikes), the park is small enough (only about 7 miles around) that you really only need a hybrid bike to see it. They have a selection of different hybrids in various sizes, and my bike worked fine. You also get a lock and helmet with your rental. Pricing is competitive ($10 an hour, with discounts for renting all day), and the checkout process is quick and easy. Staff is knowledgeable and will give you riding advice (getting to the park can be tricky). They are about a 10 minute walk from the subway line or the park entrance.

I picked the bike up and withing 25 miles the rear tire shredded on one side. I returned to the shop and was told this was just normal "wear and tear" and had nothing to do with the tune-up. I asked if an examination of the tires was nto something done in a tune-up, and they promptly told me that they have no way of knowing when a tire will shred or become unusable. The shredding was considered "a coincidence". I equate this to taking my car into the shop and know they will look at all the vital parts (tires included) and make recommendations on them. They seem to know what the remaining life span of a tire is I ended up having to buy a new tire and tube, which they would not even give me a discounted price on. They also mentioned that the tune-up plan I had purchased should have never been sold with the bike (not sure what that was all about...). I have been to many of the other bike shops in town and they are knowledgeable and thorough. These folks seem to be in it just for the money. Don't go here unless you really are in a bind. Go to a place where they know what they are talking about.

I have an e-bike that I need to bring to a shop to replace the front triangle. I asked the mechanic if I could ask him a question. Initially, he seemed to either ignore me or not hear me. I just stood there not knowing why there was this extended awkward pause. He eventually turned his head and stared at me saying nothing. He was visibly irritated. At this point, I felt like I was not welcome and was bothering the man. I asked if they work on e-bikes. He grudgingly answered the question. I walked out of the store and probably will never comeback. The only reason I did not give a one star rating is because of the two gentlemen who asked me if I needed anything. Some bike shop people forget they have a job because of customers like me who ask questions. I gave him the chance to create a bond and he blew it.

He is very knowledgeable but doesn't talk down to you. Nor does he push a hard sell, or try to hype up any of his bikes. He comes across as a honest dude. He buys bikes, fixes them up so they are ready to ride, and resells them. The best part -- he offers a 90-day warranty on any bike he sells. Try getting that on Craigslist... Here's how it works. Go to his website and check out his selection. If you see something you like, call him and arrange a time to check out the bike at his UCity home. If you decide you want the bike, you put down a non-refundable 30% deposit on it. After you do this, Paul will spend a couple days getting the bike all tuned up and ready to ride. Then you go back, pay the remaining amount, and take your new used bike. He is happy to install extras like a water-bottle holder or a kickstand for a small fee. I would recommend checking the site often, because his bikes go QUICK (especially the hybrids). He takes credit cards, but I would recommened paying with a check (w/ local address) to avoid a surcharge. Paul also does repairs, and he says that he often works on bikes that bike shops have refused. I picked up a nice hybrid bike for $280+tax and I'm enjoying it.
