On my last visit to St. Louis, I wanted to see what mountain biking might exist. After calling a few local shops, I found Big Shark to offer high-quality hard tail mountain bikes that were new this season. When I got to the shop, Casey made sure that I understood the best of what I could access and what I'm unexpected. Seeing that the website was a little confusing in terms of pricing, he rented me the bike at the lowest price point, at least $25 less than it would've been. Scheduled a bike fit for my road bike and my new gravel bike in late April. Although I've ridden bikes, mostly road, my entire life, I'd never had a professional fitting session. Mike, the owner, personally did the fitting for me on both bikes and took the time to make sure everything was correct for my type of riding. He found that my road bike stem was slightly too long, and my gravel bike stem, a little short, and switched them out with each other, saving me some money. I left my road bike there to get a Shimano recall looked at, and they contacted me shortly after to let me know it was "good to go". Although the shop is a little farther, than other shops, from where I live, it is my new shop of choice for service, accessories, etc. Mike and his team were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. I live 2hrs from this business. I strictly made the 2 hour trip to purchase bicycle accessories for my new bike. I googled large bicycle shops for St. Louis area and big shark popped up. I did notice that there were quite a few five star reviews so I set my GPS to this location when we arrived and went into the business I was impressed with the stock that they had. A sales person named Mark Ashby greeted us and asked if we needed some help. I had a very specific list of items that I was going to purchase if they had them, one of the big ticket items that I was gonna purchase was a Garmin Varia RTL515 and possibly the Garmin Edge. He was kind to get the Garmin Varia out of the display and show us. After some discussion about road bike tire pressures and what felt like being on the receiving end of being berated by a bike snob, I gathered the other items and was clearly ready to leave even though my spouse said that we should look at the Garmin Edge to purchase. I decided we were done shopping here. The first thing that was scanned was the Garmin Varia and set aside. During the whole transaction was the continuing lecture about the damn tire pressures. STFUA!!! My spouse paid for the items that Marc bagged and gave them to my spouse. I had already left the building. My spouse put the items securely into the car where they remained until we got home (after a 2 hr drive) and discovered the Garmin Varia was not in the bag. The next morning I called Big Shark (Tad) and explained that the aforementioned item did not get placed in the bag. Tad looked into it and did find that the item was placed back into the display case. Even though we discussed that the item could be mailed to me since I lived 2hrs away I decided to drive back to their location and pick it up myself, given that Marc couldn't get the purchased item into the bag, why would I think that they could mail it to the correct address. Long story short the Garmin that I purchased was on Sale but not so much considering the cost of fuel to make a 4hr round trip did not save me any money. "Did you get any gift cards or something to make up for their mistake??" NO!! Nor was I gonna ask cause I wouldn't spend another minute in that business to be berated and lectured by a bike snob on cycling and can't manage the task of getting purchased items into the customers bags. We ordered a discounted Bike rack online for a great price, but after two days got a notice that our order had been cancelled with no explanation nor apology or anything. I'm guessing it was some kind of bait-and-switch tactic designed to draw customers to their site so they can sell them other items, but since we didn't fall for it they cancelled the order. I called Big Shark after my daughter had a very specific new bike request from Santa. I asked if they have what she is looking for and was told they have a few options available. I said I'd be in that afternoon. When I came in, Dave directed me to the back where they were assembling a bike specifically for my daughter! It was exactly what she asked for. I thought I was going to spend all day driving around looking for what she wanted, but I found it at my first stop. I was so impressed with the employees taking such initiative when I hadn't even confirmed I'd be making a purchase. My son never bought a bike before so he likes the looks of one at big shark. My sone is very respectful and polite so when they told him he could not test ride any bikes during covid he was agreeable (even though all the other bike shops let him test out their bikes). Against my advice he purchased a bike from big shark. Unfortunately he rode the bike twice which flared up an arthritic foot condition so he could barely walk. Big shark took the return after 2 days and gave him $1,500 in big shark GIFT CARDS. My son asked them to reconsider and just give him a refund, Mom called to ask for a refund. I can't do anything with Big Shark gift cards. I would never buy a bike without riding it first and I also would never buy a bike that only gives in store credit when there is a bike shop next door that will give refunds. Due to covid the selection is extremely slim. I am sorry to give this review. I respect the rights of a business to have their own policies. I understand that this was my sons mistake, but there is YELP so I'm just saying. read more

This is a great shop. I got beautiful GT BMX 29" cruiser from them. They had as low a price as anyone online and they were super helpful. I wish they had more BMX stuff, but they are a great overall shop! Highly recommended. Edit: I've have a mixed bag of experiences. They don't stock many basic parts and tools. Sometimes the service is cool, sometimes it is the hipster/jock attitude mentioned in other reviews. Like a lot of things in life, all the reviews here are probably spot on in their own way. Second edit: They have great prices! If they do have the bike or parts you need. No or very little mark up over what you find online. I bought great half link chain and the install was so cheap ($15!) I just had them do when I usually do things myself. I also got a Knog bell for the same as online prices. No reason not to support a local shop when you can get what need that day for the same price! They also have a service concept during Covid 19 down! I've bought four bikes at Big Shark (kids' and adults') since they moved to Big Bend, and a number of accessories. I love the idea of a locally owned bike shop that support the community and local biking scene, but they could use an attitude adjustment. Knowledge, selection, technical skill seem fine. I just think they need nicer employees. The "cool bike dude" attitude is on full display among the sales staff, and as a small-time customer I've felt belittled several times. One of their priorities seems to be pointing out how busy they are. Meanwhile, during the pandemic they have been serving people outside, which is fine, but they haven't figured out how to keep track of who's next in line, and the employees seem annoyed by the people who have already been helped. Maybe with a better system it would seem less busy? (Typical example--I was there to buy a helmet. Guy 1 asks me some questions. He goes in and then Guy 2 comes out with a few helmets and tells me Guy 1 went on break. I tell him which one I want. Then he goes in to ring it up and Guy 1 comes out with helmets too.) One time before the pandemic I went in to ask about car racks. The guy said, "There's a bunch of different kinds, you should get whatever you want. We're pretty busy right now so let me know if you need anything." Another time they sold me the wrong size tube (by a LOT) even though I had brought the old tire in to show them. Then they were cagey about exchanging it. Eventually, they did it. Just today I was standing in line for a new tire, and the poor guy in front of me is there with his kid's bike, which looks pretty nice to me, cute green bike, it's got shocks, stripes, it's clearly a kid's bike. The employee is lecturing the customer about how the frame is bent and he can't fix the bike. "It's lost its integrity. My mechanics aren't allowed to work on it. SIR (loudly, in case the problem is that he doesn't habla ingles), the frame is bent." On and on. It looked fine to me. By the way the customer doesn't look like someone who has a ton of money. The guy has another kid's bike too, and wants the training wheels taken off. The employee made it very clear he thought the guy was stupid for needing help with this. I got out of line, got in my car, and drove to the other bike shop that is about 1000 feet away, where I think I will be taking my business from now on. read more

Had an amazing experience last week with Big Shark. I was ensuring that Julia R and I's bicycles were ready for spring and noticed Julia's bike needed a wheel replaced and a quick tune up. We called ahead and they were pleasant told us to drop it by and gave us a price range based on what we were telling them was wrong with it. A half hour later we dropped it off, they said they'd have it ready later in the day. They did! They called, we went back and picked it up only a couple hours later and the bike was as good as new. Just over two years ago my wife decided to get a new bicycle. We went to a couple local bike stores but liked the feedback we got from the staff at Big Shark the best. She ended up buying a Canondale Synapse. I ended up buying a Synapse as well last year from Big Shark. Since then we have begun doing triathalons. The staff at Big Shark has been very help guiding us through the process of picking out pedals and shoes as well as answering questions we had about wetsuits. We have gotten to talk with the owner Mike several times and have been impressed by his knowledge. Cycling is its own world, and there are so many choices it can be overwhelming. Having people you can trust and talk to makes a large difference. I also have to mention the programs Big Shark puts on outside of their usual business hours. They sponsor a number of swimming, biking, and running events. The New Town swims and triathalon along with the Vino Fondo are two that really stand out. They also work closely with triathalon groups in town providing workshops as well as discounted items. read more

I live out of town and had a flat tire. I called them, and they said just bring the bike in, and they fix the tire immediately and checked out the rest of the bike, which was so great. I guess the best thing was that they recommended that I ride to Forest Park and give me directions that would make the most sense for someone on a bike. Daughter and I stopped in tonight to drop off her bike for some repairs. We assumed it would take several days. Instead, a bike technician (Forrest?) helped us on the spot. Turns out her bike only needed two simple fixes. He took the time to explain the problem to my daughter so that she could understand what had caused it and how she might fix it herself if it happened again. Everyone was friendly. Used to be a regular customer. Over the years, I met the occasional cooler-than-thou, hipster jock a-hole as salesperson. I dealt with occasional misinformation. I was frequently promised that repairs would be done before a trip, and then dealt with not having a bike on my trip as planned. No biggie. I also paid significantly more for things than I might have paid elsewhere. I put up with this a) because I loved that they were in the Delmar Loop and in the city and b) because there were always a few really nice people at Big Shark who made me feel alright in the end. I bought a number of good quality bikes too. I turned a corner after my last visit. The salesman was such an incredible jerk, it was staggering. First, he mocked my questions and my efforts to find the color that my daughter wanted. He didn't really listen to us, so there were a number of misunderstandings that caused both of us to get progressively annoyed. Then, he insisted that a bike was the right size for my daughter when it clearly wasn't. (He changed his mind later with a shrug.) He did nothing to make my 12 year-old feel comfortable about her test ride, and was on the verge of sending her down a steep, heavily trafficked hill WITHOUT A HELMET ON, when I finally stepped in to say wtf?! About three years ago I set off on journey of fitness and weight loss. I decided that my primary exercise would be cycling. I wanted a road bike after having ridden a serviceable yet boring hybrid. I visited several LBS's, and was the most satisfied with Big Shark. They listened to m y questions and how I thought I would ride. Mike even brought in a bike I wanted to test ride with out any obligation or deposit. I ended up purchase a different bike than the one he brought in. Since then we've purchased three additional bikes from Big Shark. One was a replacement after an incident with a car, but each time their attention and service has been spectacular. My only regret is insisting on an endurance frame rather than a more aggressive frame. My return visits for service and tune-ups are have been fantastic and often performed on-the-spot, which is more than I could ask. While I will visit other shops for accessories, etc., I anticipate my future major purchases to be at Big Shark. read more

I have bought three bikes here over the years. Yesterday I took my 10 year old bike in bc the seatpost was stuck. Not only were they friending and willing to take a look but the boss himself Mike Weiss jumped in and was able to get it loose just as they we about to call it a lost cause. Then the staff (Aaron) spent lots of time talking with me about fit, saddles etc. I am not a huge gearhead, racer or anything but I just love riding and they took the time to help me out. Great service and I will keep going there as I have been for years. Next up are bikes for my toddlers and probably a sweet new ride for myself in the next few years. read more

Stopped in meaning to check out a few bikes and ended up buying a Marin. :) I test drove a really cute cruiser style bike but after receiving a lot of helpful advice as to why I really won't like that bike in the long run....I ended up settling on a very cool "grown up" bike that will be better for me and my style of riding and they were very thorough in the sizing of the bike (which I did NOT receive at the last bike place I went to which is why I was bike shopping in the first place). They aren't the cheapest but they do have a wide selection and maybe if you're not ready for the purchase....it's a great place to get advice and a good bike fitting. :) read more

We've purchased a couple bikes from Big Shark in the past and they were great. Service has typically been wonderful. I brought my granddaughter to buy a bike for her. If I said they had no interest in selling a bike or in even being courteous that would be an understatement. It was her birthday. They were indifferent and awful. Truly as disappointing an experience as I could've imagined. Really sucked. But it was her birthday so I excused us and went elsewhere without saying much to them about it. I did purchase her a bicycle and she loves riding. Really wish they could live up to their past level of service instead of what is now apparently more hype than reality. So sad to see a good business become this unpleasant. I didn't post a one star because of past experience, but the guy we spent time with there last week was truly a one star employee. read more

POOR SERVICE- I have admired the a bikes at Big Shark for years whenever bought merch. When I finally decided to make a big purchase, I did my research, went to BS on Friday intent on buying a bike and trading mine in. I was there for about a half an hour wandering and waiting for someone to help me. During that time another woman also came in and was also waiting. I approached the counter and told a sales person who was helping someone else, "I'd like to trade my 2014 Raleigh in and buy a new bike." He simply said, "We don't take trade ins" and that was that. (I left and went to Alpine Shop and bought a Specialized carbon fiber Vita- not what I originally wanted but their service was spectacular.) Poor customer service and disorganization: I purchased a Giant Escape 3 on Tuesday 4/21. it took staff over a half hour to confirm they even had it in stock (and I'm starting to doubt they had it at all). They then told me that it needed to built and promised that it would only take 2 days at most. Called to check the status on Sunday 4/26 and they couldn't even locate the bike and had no idea of what I was talking about. When I asked for a refund I was treated like an afterthought. read more

First experience with Big Shark, things went very well at the shop, not allowed in the store but there was a line of customers and they had enough help so that things moved quickly. After showing me a few options I found the perfect one in my size, Haro PD2. Great, right! Well after riding yesterday, my friend told me that the price on Big Shark's website had the bike listed at $799 instead of the $900 I paid at the store. I called the shop and was simply told that the price on the website is a mistake. Hmmm...not really satisfactory in my opinion. Perhaps the store is giving out pandemic pricing? I don't know, but what I do know is they could have been more apologetic about a mistake that they made or offered a complimentary accessory. Quality...but at a price. You will not find a cheap bike in the place. And by "cheap" I mean both price & quality. What sold me was FREE ADJUSTMENTS FOR LIFE! Any new bike sold at Big Shark comes with free adjustments for as long as you own it. Any new (multi-speed) bike will stretch the shift cables after a while. Bring it back for free adjustments. Bike been sitting in the basement all winter? Bring it back in the Spring for a free check-up. Wheels get out-of-true? No problem - they'll fix them for free. If you didn't buy your bike there, Karl at A&M Cyclery by Tower Grove Park is a little lighter on repair prices. I love my Raleigh Hybrid bike. I bought two of my bikes here several years ago and have been bringing them in for tune-ups (one free every year if you buy your bike here - a $79 value), I get tire service here too which is quick and very reasonably priced, as well as parts and accessories. They put my 4-bike rack together at the last minute and showed me how to use it. It was easy and convenient. I would have had to pay same price at other retailers and put it together myself. It's the little things like this that make a difference to me. Great customer service thus far and wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

This was the best experience ever. I bought a bike 3 weeks ago and rode it around a few days in Forest Park and Grants Trail and just didn't like it. So I came back today and Big Shark worked with me on an exchange. If I drove a new car off the lot I'd lose value right away but Big Shark gave me full credit. Plus they have the additional work of transferring all the add-ons to the new bike. Again no charge and lifetime service warranty. People couldn't be nicer. My little granddaughter still rides her bike from Big Shark that she got one Christmas 4 years ago. Santa bought it used, reasonable price and great condition. read more

I could not have had a better experience with Big Shark Bicycle. I was looking for a specific bicycle all over the country and managed to find one in my size at Big Shark Bicycle. They are 800 miles away so I called and spoke with Rachel who confirmed they had the bike it stock and that they could ship it. She clearly explained the whole process and then I placed the order. The receipts were quickly emailed to me as was the shipping information. I was told to expect the bike between 20-23 August, but they managed to assemble the bike and ship it and it arrived on 18 August, 2-5 days early. The bike arrived in perfect condition. I had one follow up question and called Big Shark Bicycle and spoke to someone in the service department and they were friendly and clearly answer my question. I recently bought a bike at Big Shark. I bike pretty casually, so my criteria was pretty much a good quality bike that was comfortable and would be versatile. The guy who helped me was really friendly, knowledgeable, and took the time to listen to my needs. Although they have some pretty expensive bikes there, he showed a wide array of models/prices. We ultimately settled on one of the less expensive bikes -- and there wasn't any elitist "Ohhh, that's ALL you're buying?" vibe. I got the impression that the folks at Big Shark really want to help people have a good biking experience, regardless of if they are a serious cyclist or someone who is very casual (like me!) Additionally, they are honest. Second time out with the bike, I got a flat. So I took it back in there, thinking I had run over a small piece of glass. They looked at it, and told me the problem was actually that the manufacturer mounted the tube incorrectly, and fixed it for free. While their price for fixing a flat isn't that much...point still remains that they could have lied about the cause of the flat and charged me, and I never would have known...but they didn't.
