Blatant tourist trap. Our waiter specifically recommended the two dishes we ordered, and they ended up being really bad AND one of our most expensive meals in Spain. Calamari (3/10): overcooked and rubbery. Very tasteless, and packed with an uninspired salad. Monkfish skewer (2/10): absolutely gross. The fish was super overcooked with no flavor. A local favorite, I'm told. I had lunch here with my daughter's class, who were attending a weeklong Spanish culture and language school in Sevilla, and a local guide. We were challenged to order various tapas in Spanish. I enjoyed the spinach and garbanzo beans, cheese plate, and beef medallions with a whiskey sauce. The service was excellent and friendly. We stopped into this restaurant at around 12:30pm on a Wednesday after seeing rave reviews about it all over Google, and I'm glad we did. The restaurant was empty when we got there (as it was right when they opened), so we were seated immediately, but it quickly started filling up with patrons within the next fifteen minutes. The interior of the restaurant looks rustic and historic (some might say a little chintzy), with a full-service bar, lacquered wood, and colorful old paintings on the walls. Service is friendly and fun, with great recommendations. Most dishes come in a tapas (small), media (medium), or entree (large) size, so you can pick your portion. We recommend a media portion for large parties to share! Bread service is free here, and the bread itself is a nice rye-type of loaf - my tip is to save some for dipping in the sauces that you will inevitably receive with your tapas (the Spanish really know how to make a good sauce). My mom also ordered a glass of sangria, which she said was the best she had in Spain...refreshing and fruity, with just the right balance of sweetness and tartness! We started with the Alcachofas de la Plancha con Jamón (Grilled Artichokes with Spanish Ham, €3.50 for tapas portion), which were perfectly salty and briny, and the jamón with its slight crispiness added a great touch! Salpicón de Marisco con Langostinos (Langoustine and Seafood Salad, €6.50 for the media portion), which is basically a mixed seafood salad with prawns. The salad was extremely fresh-tasting, with a good portion of seafood that was well-cooked, and crunchy greens. I will say that it was heavily dressed with oil, but the acidity of the ingredients combatted the richness of the oil nicely. We also ordered the Pata Negra con Aceite Ecológico y Tomato (basically jamón ibérico on a baguette with olive oil and tomato, €11 for a loaf). Though this seems like a simple dish, it is bursting with flavors and textures, from the richness of the oil to the saltiness of the jamón to the cleanness of the tomato...my dad remarked that this was one of the best bites of food he has had in Spain! Next, we ordered the Barriga de Atun con Salmorejo (Tuna Belly in Brine, €7 for media portion). The tuna belly was delectably fatty and tender, practically melting in my mouth, and the salty brine sauce that it's served in complements the richness of the fish perfectly. We also ordered the Presa Ibérica Corte Serrano (traditional Spanish grilled pork, €16.50) served with potatoes and Padrón peppers. The pork was juicy and tender, grilled to perfection and well-seasoned, and the potatoes were roasted to a nice crisp with a soft interior and served with a smoky sauce (similar to Patatas Bravas). Of course, the Padrón peppers always add a nice touch! The Calamar Entero de la Plancha (whole grilled calamari) was also delicious - we were given a generous portion of calamari for €23! The calamari retained the perfect amount of bite, and it was served with a well-dressed, delightfully crunchy salad with a good amount of citrus. All in all, we had a wonderful meal at la Bodega de la Alfalfa...with delicious food, kind service, and affordable prices for large portions, this is a wonderful stop to get your tapas fix in Sevilla! read more

I was just out looking for a tapas place that looked inviting and had a decent size bar area where I could stand or sit and have cerveza and tapas. I hit upon La Bodega which was an great find. Got my spot at the bar and a cerveza and then started ordering a few tapas. Had to have jamon which was terrific and aside of toasty pan with olive oil. Also had the roasted red peppers which had few chopped onions to which they added shredded fresh tuna, so tasty. The bartender was very good and friendly and even a bit of a showman. We came here after a day of sightseeing but honestly we were both a little disappointed. The place was way more touristy than I would have liked. They even have English menus. Not that that's terrible per se but the tapas itself were not that great and more expensive. We ordered a handful of dishes and none really stood out. The bacalao was good and it seems like that's what all the reviews talk about. The dessert we ordered was also really good. But in comparison, La Taberna was definitely so much better and for fancier tapas Mechela was also at a different level than this place. My recommendation? Yes they have plastic menus in English (combined with German!) but we had traveled all day and were starving so this fit the bill. huge list to choose from so sure to find something to hit the spot. Sat and the bar and had good, friendly service. Speaking a little Spanish seemed to go a long way. Wine was only €1,70 for a decent pour so can't get enough of that!! Gambas al ajillo was the most expensive thing we chose-a plato for €10,50 but they came out sizzling hot with a nice kick of garlic and hot pepper. Great to soak up the oil with the breads. Other selections were tapas portions all €2,50. Spinach and grabanzos hot and fresh, croquetas con bacalao decent and red shrimp croquetas ok but only a little shrimp flavor. My husband and I loved hanging out at this bodega while visiting Sevilla... and we visited it several times in the evening. As a matter of fact, now back at the states, we regularly mention how it would be ideal to have a place like this and enjoy afternoons there... we always remember this little hole in the wall with fond memories. First off, it was convenient as it was within walking distance of our hotel (Abanico) and it always had a great local crowd mixed with some foreigners (heard Italian on a few occasions). There were young, old, couples, groups of friends, and people that were enjoying the afternoon solo (not something we noticed happened often in Spain... they are highly social and what seems to be communal people)... just about all kinds of people. It was right off a small street, so it had a lot of people coming and going; the gentlemen behind the bar were always quick and helpful in answering questions we may have had. What I appreciated the most was that all the bocados and bocadillos, as well as the tapas, were on display under glass, so we were able to see what the dishes looked like... it also helped us try out new things once we asked "que es eso" and they'd explain what it was. They had both English and Spanish menus, for those visitors not familiar with Spanish. We ate a variety of things (sorry, no pictures) but their bocadillos were great - filling, simple with just chorizo (or morcilla) and cheese, yet still flavorful and memorable when combined with the cañas we tossed back there. This place was very affordable and we always walked out full, happy and not broke. We actually had some of our best 'local' experiences here, as crowded as it was. It felt true to local customs: simple and unpretentious, yet full of life, passion and energy (I'm sure that was because of the staff and the local crowd).. also a great people-watching spot as you stand & much and drink at the tall barrels in the bodega .. you can relax, and watch as people go on about their lives. This restaurant is the epitome of a tourist trap! Multi page glossy menus in several languages with pictures - 3 out of 4 tapas served with French Fries (really!).
