Four of us made the trek for Friday lunch. The setting is so stunning -- though it's off a main(-ish) road, the view from the dining room window makes you feel like you're miles from anywhere, looking out across their fields and a beautiful Provençal valley. The owners greet you and serve you, and they're neither obsequious nor brusque, just friendly and personable. They have a new menu every week (3 entrées, 3 mains, 3 desserts), but for Friday lunch they only have one main dish option, which is, I understand, a rotating aïoli (or perhaps it's the same aïoli every time? At any rate this time it was a very simple fish with freshly steamed or boiled vegetables, and a big bowl of freshly mixed "true aïoli" -- that very garlicky garlic-egg-olive oil emulsion -- for everyone to share). It was tasty and well-made and so simple that I wondered if I need to start giving my taste buds a break and eating more basic vegetables with little or no "treatment". We were all so unanimously enthusiastic about the experience that we reserved to come back that same evening with our whole group. We wanted to try out the full menu and a dessert that apparently never disappears off the menu (it's made in paper with almond and prune and spiced fruit) that smelled wonderful. I wondered if the charm and glow of the place would be lessened the second time, but it absolutely wasn't. Julien is such a kind presence, the food is such a great balance of simple and interesting (my dinner was much closer to the general French aesthetic than my lunch -- a chowder-like fish cassolette starter and a delicious chanterelle risotto), the setting and hosts were once again delightful, and the dessert, well... it was something very special. For dinner, I had the linguine aux fruits de mer (linguine with seafood), excellent and an abundant quantity. I was also tempted by the mussels and pizza. Cote d Azur pizza is not to be missed. After all we had eaten desert was not needed but the ice cream treats were not to be missed. The glaces, ice cream, are fresh and smooth. Make it into a sundae and you have an indulgence. We're not the type of people who like to complain and generally try to give grace. However, shortly afterward, another two couples who had arrived more than 40 minutes after us was seated outside before we were. At that point, we decided to call it a night and go somewhere else. We also noticed differences in service. It made us feel uncomfortable, and we had never experienced anything like that before. We decided to pay and leave. We're not sure what caused the situation and hope it was simply a one-time occurrence, because the bar itself is gorgeous. They have everything from full bodied red wines, whites, rosé and Champagne. You buy the bottle in the store. If you would like to enjoy the bottle at La Grande Cave or just have a glass of the bottle, corkage is €8. The light food is well presented, is of high quality and is very individual depending on the waiter. One dish can be garnished with paprika and strawberries by one and with tomatoes by another. Interesting and authentic! You can also buy wine by the glass. They have red/white/rosé of the day for about €8 with higher quality than neighboring restaurants. The winestore/bar has about 6 small tables in a steep alley located in central Villefranche. During high season there is a calm flow of people strolling by. The environment is beautiful with a glimpse of the harbour. This is a perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine before dinner. Maybe buy a bottle, have a glass of it and finish it with dinner at home or at a restaurant nearby?
