One of them came over to us to explain their menu and the different options we could get. I decided on the cod in creamy sorrel sauce and my girlfriend got the smoked salmon and spinach pie. Both were great, but the best part of the meal was the bread pudding with wine jam that we ordered for dessert. The wife told us that the recipe for the jam was made in-house by the chef who experimented with a few herbs and spices that she at first found doubtful, but very quickly fell in love with (as did we). I'd definitely recommend it. What makes this experience five-star worthy though was the atmosphere. Everyone was so friendly and talkative that I could relax and unwind from a pretty exhausting day. At the other Parisian restaurants we visited, the customers kept to themselves, without much interaction with the staff. Here, I was talking to the tables beside me, and it was actually another couple that suggested we get the bread pudding. Thoroughly enjoyed and wish I could go back. P.S. Something unique about Paris is the wonderful specificity of little shops, like a place that just sells handmade umbrellas, or food from Puglia, or a traiteur with delicacies from the Auvergne. Willi's is like this for wines of the Northern Rhone valley, where Syrah reigns as king. If you're particularly passionate about the savory and complex wines of this region, this is one of the best places on the planet to find these wines, many allocated or 'culty', for prices on the list that are sometimes even less than US retail. The list isn't just restricted to this region, while Cornas, Côte-Rotie, St. Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, and others are extremely well represented, you'll also find some terrific selections in areas like the Langedoc, Bandol, and Provence in general. The food has been consistently good for me, and while it's not breaking any boundaries, I have enjoyed over the years a simple roast chicken with purée, a l'onglet de boeuf Charolais, duck, a sharp arugula salad, and desserts like a baked apple compote and a rich chocolate cake with crème anglaise. I have no idea what Lynette Z. means by "cafeteria style" in her review, but I'd like to eat and drink at this cafeteria. Yes, there's swag to purchase, and I love it. From the punny Sac à vingt (i.e. vin) chiens, honoring the original dog Willi, to postcards picturing the wine-themed posters that a different artist designs each year for Willi's, to the posters themselves, Willi's also sells a few bottles you can take away. Juvéniles serves up creative French fare, and like other restaurants has a large wine selection - so much so that it's marketed as a wine bar in addition to a restaurant. We were seated promptly once we arrived; the space isn't too large and the decor is minimal - though honestly the main focal point is the large wall of wine bottles which is decor enough. I thought the lighting was a bit off - it was too bright, but that's more of a me thing. The menu had a selection of apps and entrees, and additionally they were showcasing some specials. But first, wine - the team gave us some good suggestions and we ended up picking something that went well with our mains. I also thought it was a nice touch that they offered wine by the glass, bottle, or a carafe. We didn't want to commit to a bottle so the carafe was perfect. For my app, I decided to start with the butternut squash and chestnut tart. The squash was cut in layers and piled into a buttery crust that was sliced. The tart was good, and came with a tasty sauce that complemented it well. For my main I went with the pork; this was sliced and paired with potatoes and mandarin oranges of all things. It sounded odd, but honestly it worked - the pork was tender and the sweetness of of the oranges paired well with it. Additionally, the dish came with a flavorful sauce and thin slices of cheese that were also good complements. For dessert, we decided to get the rice pudding with salted caramel. This was excellent - the rice pudding was flavorful and the salted caramel was nice and thick. The sweet caramel played off the more mild pudding - a great finisher. Service was good - the staff was friendly and food came out at a good pace. Overall, I had a good experience at Juvéniles - the food was inspired and high quality, all served in a comfortable atmosphere. Personally, I would opt to dine elsewhere when I return to Paris just to change it up, but this is a solid spot for a good meal.

And then there are places one visits because the walls have been classified by the French state as more important than anything currently being served beneath them. Le Cochon à l'Oreille is the third kind. The hand-painted ceramic tiles -- a Monument Historique since 1984, depicting Les Halles in its thunderous, market-heaving prime -- are among the most quietly extraordinary interiors in Paris. They were fired by the same Belle Époque manufactories that lined the walls of the Paris Métro. They were reason enough to walk through the door. The food was good. Genuinely so. But atmosphere is not decoration -- it is seasoning. When the room promises one century and delivers another, even a well-executed plate arrives already compromised. The kitchen did its part. The rest of the house did not. The music was modern. I will repeat that, because it merits repetition: in a room whose tiles were fired in the Belle Époque, the soundtrack was indistinguishable from a mid-range hotel lobby in the 14th arrondissement. A gramophone. A chansonnier. Even a tasteful playlist of period recordings -- any of these would have cost nothing and transformed everything. When we visited, the room held only a couple finishing their meal as we arrived, and ourselves. By the time their plates were cleared, we were alone inside. And yet, the owner was eating behind the bar. I do not begrudge anyone a meal. But in a monument this loaded with history, even a quiet afternoon is a performance. The stage was set. The cast, it seemed, had not been informed. And the staff -- pleasant, I must say -- wore nothing to suggest they understood where they were working. A white apron. A waistcoat. Some small gesture toward the era these tiles fought to preserve. Chef Apostolski trained under Robuchon. He knows what mise en scène means. One wonders why it stops at the kitchen pass. One visits their website hoping, perhaps, for context -- some acknowledgment of what makes this address singular. There is none. The site is images and a menu. The Monument Historique classification, the ghost of Zola's ventre de Paris -- not a word. A restaurant that cannot be troubled to tell its own story online is unlikely to tell it in the room either. Le Cochon à l'Oreille is a privilege disguised as a bistro. The tiles deserve a director. What they have, at present, is a tenant. Come for the tiles, stay for a perfectly acceptable lunch, and try not to mourn the version of this place that should exist but doesn't.
