We started with the buckwheat pancake with potatoes, ham, and rachlette cheese-- delicious!! Then we did the crepe with homemade salted caramel sauce. All I can say is... we should've ordered TWO of each!! The water with strawberry essence was also a great compliment. As I was gathering my things a very friendly waitress came so I ordered what I was there for: formule midi for 14.90€. Midi was a galette, a 1/4 cidre, and a chocolate crepe for dessert. As a vegetarian I've never done a midi before as it's usually items I don't eat. I didn't understand it was the "galette of the day" as that was not on the placard outside, so when it was explained to me that my option was ham and cheese I asked if it could be done without the ham, and that was no problem at all. They were really busy, but they put my drink on the table almost right away. The galette came out in good time and was hot and tasted great. I could have used more salad but it was fresh and dressed well. After I finished a different server came and asked if I wanted dessert. I said I had ordered the midi. She saw the little ticket on my table, said "ah oui!" and ran off. About 5 mins later the chocolate crepe came out, steaming hot. A bit about the servers: I had a different person every single time someone came to my table. They were all polite, friendly, and very quick on the uptake. Having someone new five times didn't negatively affect my experience at all. It seems they were all watching everyone and the first person to get to you made their tables turn over faster - not to mention, their overall service better. I thought this was a great deal for a meal in a tourist area. 14.90€ gets you a tasty galette, a crepe, and more than a glass of lightly alcoholic cidre to wash it all down with. I'm almost sad this isn't my favorite kind of food, otherwise I would be here daily.

We stopped in for lunch while in town and had the 70 euro tasting menu (the baby tasting menu!), with some added local oysters. The oysters were massive (a bit to much for our tastes), but they were the sea in a single bite. Our tasting menu started with this undescribable bowl of seafood, which included some langostino, cockles, oysters, and an amazing broth that highlighted kaffir lime. Just wow... Next we had some fresh ahi tuna. I'm not sure their are words to describe how good this simply prepared was. It was cooked like a steak, with a wonderful sear. The side dish, zucchini with egg and black olives was unique and was just enough to add to the dish, but got out of the way of the wonderful tuna. Dessert was equally amazing and unique. I had the mint, dark chocolate mousse dish that tasted of fresh, green mint with a great dark chocolate with crunchy bits. My wife had a raspberry meringue that was, again, amazing. I keep using the words amazing and wonderful, but that is accurate. The impeccable service, the perfect food, the wonderful (that word again!) wine list and great location make this a must if you are in La Rochelle.

Le tout pour un prix somme toute abordable puisque si on choisit le menu, on s'en tire à 52 Euros par personne (précisons : sans le vin ni le café). Ca donne envie de se faire à nouveau plaisir dans un restaurant étoilé, chez Coutanceau ou un autre de ses confrères.
