While one of the better cantinas in town for some unique veggie and vegan items, even through those lens, Cabaña proved to tether on the more decent end based on my two experiences. First, let's talk about the interior. It is filled with wonderful decor that really puts you in a dream. All of the signs inside are individually illustrated, making it feel like you're stumbling upon a rare gem of a spot. For the menu, they have a lot of standard taqueria options from tacos to burritos. What caught me immediately were the number of vegan/vegetarian options available that's not just a bean burrito! On my first visit, I went with the Olmeca Bowl, a delicious blend of cactus, artichoke hearts, black beans, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, carrots, celery, cauliflower all marinated in their house vinaigrette. It was a large plate of mixed veggies that really made my heart jump - excellent flavors and enough for a second meal, but a bit too salty for me. I wish there had been some rice but the chips/salsa on the side made up for that small factor. On my second time, I had their Tolteca vegan burrito which was pretty good too, but the up-charged items they advertised including the fried zucchini and sweet potatoes felt lacking inside. I went with my parents who ordered some standard burritos and their's were falling apart and wet from the excess oils inside. Poor assembly indeed for all of our burritos. Both of my meals were considered specials and I felt they were a bit expensive, especially the vegan options. My meal came out to $16 which felt really high when you think about how much the contents inside really cost. But that's part of our #inflation2022, am I right? (sigh...) Overall, pretty good spot for veggie friendly Mexican in town. I am looking forward to returning to see what else they got up in here. read more

This is my go to spot. I used to live a block from here. The portions are huge and the food is delicious. Santa Cruz has lots of hidden places to eat. Places look weather beaten and empty but just like the cycles of the tides you have to know when things start popping and coming alive. And Taqueria Cabana is one of these places. The surrounding store lots are empty and the parking lot is worn... on the outside is unappealing, but once you have had their food, you'll come back for more. I went here on the advice of four co-workers. They said to order the shrimp tacos on a crispy tortilla. It sounded good and I ordered 2 of them and one chicharrones taco. I was disappointed with the shrimp because the tacos were mostly cabbage and/or lettuce. I think there may have been 3 small shrimp in each taco. Definitely not enough. I also think that for the shrimp, there could have been more flavor. The Chicharrones taco was really good. Great flavor with nice crunch on the outside and tender on the inside. My first visit to La Cabana Taqueria. Food was clean and fresh. I had two tacos shrimp and artichoke and the ceviche. So good. The counter staff was very nice and helpful with my order. The atmosphere had a great beach vibe. Definitely a place to visit. The prices are reasonable. read more

3 1/2 stars (but closer to a 3 than a 4). This is a second taqueria close to our hotel, so we decided to see if it was as good as the other....it wasn't. I ordered a shrimp burrito and son got his standard asada burrito. Quality of meat/shrimp was decent, but biggest disappointment was the assembly of the burrito. Three bites into mine and the burrito fell completely apart, so I had to eat the rest with a fork. Using slightly bigger tortillas would solve the problem. Lots of swag for sale in the place, they have outdoor seating, and they have a breakfast menu. Solid, but not on par with the taqueria right across the street. read more

Literally our favorite taqueria in Santa Cruz! Enshrining they have is amazing but, their nopales is the most flavorful I've ever had. Their burritos are huge and all their ingredients are fresh and authentic. Even their Agua Fresca is good with added chia seeds to make it special. The ambiance is very authentic to a Mexican taqueria and they have seating both inside as well as outside. The service is friendly and they are always helpful too. We literally eat here every time we are in Santa Cruz and will even take a burrito to go for the road. read more

What I really like about Cabaña is the variety of their menu. They've just got stuff other people don't - like nopales. Last time I went I got the Santa Cruz Special Burrito which has artichoke and shrimp in it. I enjoyed it. The shrimp part especially. I think the artichoke flavor didn't come through as well, but it was still yummy. Their carnitas are also pretty solid. Their rice is a little bland. In general the burritos are well proportioned and good sized. I feel like they are maybe a little slower at their creation than other taquerias. They seem to be taking COVID seriously. This is the most unique and interesting Taqueria in the Santa Cruz area and possibly anywhere! I can't believe they don't have universal 5 star reviews. What sets La Cabana apart from the usual joint is that while, sure, they make tacos, burritos, and enchiladas, they have many interesting filling choices, ranging from nopales (cactus), adobo-spiced camote (a type of sweet potato), mushrooms, artichoke hearts, and more. Not only that, but they really care about quality down to the details. They have three sauces usually - a red, a green, and a mole. The red sauce is really earthy and slightly smoked - it is almost like a New Mexico-style red. The mole is a thin, sweet type of mole (which they in fact call "sweet mole" on the menu), and while it isn't as thick as what you would get at a very high end restaurant, it does have plenty of complex ancho chile, chocolate, and herb flavor. I daresay they have the best red and mole sauces of any taqueria-type place. Another indication of the attention to detail are the tortillas they use for the enchiladas, which are a deep yellow and have a very deep corn masa flavor. These are not mission brand from Costco in a giant bag like other taquerias try to pull off. I feel like with the many indigenous filling options (e.g. nopales) and the authenticity of the red and mole sauces, eating here gives a bit of a rare glimpse of the pre-Hispanic culinary traditions. All in all, this is a unique and excellent taqueria that everyone should go to. The only problem is that you might start to notice all of the corners that other places are trying to cut! read more

On a road trip with my girls driving down the coast- one of my friends recommended this spot as it was one of her favorites from a previous trip! We'd worked up an appetite after being on the walking trails all day. This place didn't disappoint. With the exception of seafood- I don't eat meat so it was nice to have options. There was definitely a line (good sign) but everyone was spaced apart while wearing masks. There is outdoor dining but there are only two tables. You are welcome to dine inside and space is limited. Bring your own wipes to clean down the table though- they were so busy they didn't get a chance to after each customer. My choice was the super quesadilla with shrimp- pretty straightforward. Food was fresh off the grill- came with Fresca, onions, sour cream with guacamole and salsa. It was really filling- Portions were such a good size I saved half for dinner. I tried a couple of places on my trip up north, I'm from San Diego, and this location stands out as just not being good and flavorless. Fish tacos were smelly and soggy and other tacos were salty. Azteca Burrito means vegan eats. I usually get la cabaña delivered to be honest.. I add cenavegan al pastor to this gem at home (if you don't know now you know). The azteca burrito contains artichoke, nopales, aguacate, arroz, cabbage, and frijoles. It's super tasty and filling. My hubs loved the chicken mole and the serving is plenty. The to go orders comes with chips and some mild red salsa. I have no complaints! Orders are on time and accurate. One other yelper mentioned the vegan burrito here but I'm going to add a few details: It's called "The Azteca" and it's only found on the daily specials. I live around the corner and it's always been on the special. It's easily the best burrito on the block. Get yours with a one of their three molés: red, green brown (in descending order of spiceyness). Order red molé with jalapeño inside if you're THE BOSS. Also, Yelp says there's no outdoor seating but whenever I've been there we were able to sit at one of the two tables out front. Each table seats three. read more

The prices are very reasonable, especially given the portions you get. The food definitely tastes very fresh, and overall I had a really awesome meal. Service is pretty minimal - you get chips and watery salsa, and your food gets brought over in a tray. However, water is self serve, and you bus your stuff when you're done. The customer service was next level. The woman taking our order was very friendly and helpful. We ordered two hard shell tacos - shredded beef and carne asada - and four soft shell tacos - (2) carne asada and (2) Al pastor, rice and beans, and chips. Everything was so fresh and delicious. One of our go-to places for burritos, whether pre-pandemic and sitting down, or now pre-ordering via phone and then enjoying at home. We're big fans of their super burritos, and their chicharron one is super good. Also great: all other fillings we ever tried (nopales, shrimp (!!!), al pastor, carne asada, chicken). If you're looking for a place to hang out for hours, this may not be it. It's cheerful and nicer decorated than quite a few taquerias we have been to, but it's more about the food than the ambiance here. The service is always fast and super friendly, the tortilla chips while waiting are crisp, and their salsas are yummy.
