Was visiting my boo in Santa Cruz and he recommended this spot, so of course we had to try it! We went on a Sunday afternoon and the line honestly wasn't too bad. We waited around 20-30 minutes to order, plus another 15-20 minutes for our food. I loooooved The Grotto!! I was craving fish and this seriously hit the spot. I can definitely see why this place is so popular--the sandwich was fresh, flavorful, and so satisfying. Holy cow, Batman!! How did we get so lucky that one of the best sandwich shops in the world is in Santa Cruz county? We got the Grotto (fresh, blackened snapper, chimichurri tomatoes, jalapeno-lime slaw, tarragon-basil aioli, arugula, francese roll) and the Sailor (New York style pastrami, Vermont white cheddar cheese, pickled onions, arugula, coriander-mustard aioli, francese roll). How are we supposed to try different sandwiches when these are so good you'd want to order them again and again? They had plenty of craft beers and canned wine. I tried a mimosa one and decided that Somerbella was the best canned wine I've ever had. I wanted to try every flavor so I bought all 6 ($7 a pop.) Though the line was long, it moved at a decent pace. Parking can be very limited and tight, but we managed to get a spot in the back parking lot. Had a chance to try the viral Seabright deli, and Im really glad we got to check it out today. The line is long but thankfully moves quickly which is awesome. There are tables inside and outside although not too many. For our sandwiches we tried the Yacht Club - this was yummy and flavorful but our favorite was the Castle Cove. I think this is my new favorite sandwich shop in Santa Cruz. The lines are long due to popularity and going viral online but the workers have a system in place to move you as quickly as possible. Delicious sandwiches and such a great menu! It was super busy when we came in for lunch, but I can totally see why. Despite the long line we got our food pretty quickly too. I ordered the Mermaid sandwich and I have no notes. I loved the bread, the meat didn't have any funny aftertaste, and the spreads were super flavorful! Additionally, the vegetables were fresh and well seasoned, and complemented the sandwich well. The sandwich was messy in the best way. Swing and a miss. Don't come on a weekend if you can avoid it! The line was at least 40 minutes long. We saw people in line at 10:45 (15 minutes before it opened) and thought it'd clear out by the time we came by which was 1:20 pm. No the line was 2-3 times longer. The restaurant was sweltering inside and there wasn't much shade to wait in the heat outside so we abandoned our mission. They had also sold out of their banana pudding. The pointed out where we could grab the menus. I heard their sandwiches were big & flavorful, so I shared with my 10 yr old. We got the NEPTUNE sandwich ($17), with picked onions on the side, as she doesn't enjoy them. We both really loved it. She said she kinda wished we didn't share. But she didn't know if she could finish another half. It had: Oven Roasted Turkey, Basil Pesto, Provolone, Sun-Dried Tomato Aioli, Arugula, Marinated Cherry Tomatoes, Pickled Onions, Fresh Basil, Rosemary- Garlic Aloli on Toasted Francese Roll Husband got the brisket chili. After some dining mishaps the day before I could've not been happier with my experience at this deli. Walked in nobody was really there. The guys were super friendly. It's a clean shop. It was cool on a warm day.. I was overwhelmed with the choices and I had asked the guys what was most popular and they said "The Cove" and it was tangy and bright, and sweet and savory, and the bread was incredibly soft and warm. I tried every side that they offered I think. Well this was a spontaneous thing, friends of mine saw this place on Tik Tok and knew I loved beaches and well... the rest in about to unfold. Immediately this place was crazy busy, or at least I believed it was but we had just beat the lunch rush because it was way worse after getting outside. It's a small establishment but not tiny. The recent craze for this place is probaly why it gave me a dose of closterphobia. They had a patron occasionally walk out and down the line to offer a menu. The place was louder than I anticipated it to be, good news is they do have a restroom on site... One, unisex restroom. Outside was two grills actively in use making fresh meat for the sandwhiches they had to offer. I ordered the Cubano and I had originally wanted a cup of chili... bummer they didn't have any on this day. I ordered the Cubano. The sandwhich was good, infact it was ok. I was kind of disappointed because everything felt so average and the hype built this up to be something amazingly delicous. It's an ok spot, plain and simple. Was it worth the trip, not really but it was a nice spot to try and I'm glad I did. They were rich in flavor, soaked in sauces, and the bread was crispy. Perfection! The chicken in the Yacht Club was juicy, well seasoned, and the smoky flavor was so delicious. Great balance of veggies and protein, crunchy bacon adds a nice texture. My favorite of the two has to be the Giant Dipper, it came with a hot bowl of Smoked Brisket Au jus as a dipping sauce. Which further enhanced the flavor profile of the sandwich. We drank the leftover portion like soup! Also the amount of meat in the sandwich blew me away, generous portion, SUPER FILLING. We have come to this deli every time we've come to Santa Cruz for years. It's walking distance from the Boardwalk. The location isn't the biggest but it makes good use of the space it has. I have always had good sandwiches there, but this time I was somewhat disappointed. Maybe it's my own high expectations, but my sandwich today was just okay. It still wasn't bad by any means, it just wasn't great, either. THEEEEE BEST SANDWICHES IN TOWN! I don't know how I haven't been here sooner as I am always in Seabright when in town, but I will be here every trip. They are only open from 11:00 AM to 3:45 PM, so get your sandwich quick. I have been here a couple times already since discovering it about a month ago and everyone who works here is so nice and helpful. Plenty of seating inside and out the back past the bathrooms. Parking is never a problem even though it's just on the street. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu either--everything is delicious! I have tried the Yacht Club, the Neptune, and the Mermaid. I couldn't even tell you which one was my favorite because they are all so solid.
