Mom and I were out in the Nederland area visiting my brother's future in-laws. As a final hurrah, we ate here for lunch after church. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. Both servers were also on top of their game, always checking on our beverages and the taste of our foods. The ambiance seemed well tuned to eating in a Mexican restaurant. Don't get me wrong you're getting tex-mex here despite looking authentic on the outside the food is absolutely terrible. 4 plates came for our table and every one of them was laughably bad. Half of them didn't get finished and the other half made us sick. The salsa is not good, literally nothing is edible here and the prices are ridiculously expensive for the quality of what you're getting. Anything above a 1 star review is coming from someone with no taste and no idea what mexican food should taste like. TEX-MEX only here with extreme prices, poor quality. Well.... Today is the last Day I will Ever Do Business with this Restaurant.... I sat down at the bar. I asked, the woman bartender to place my order for supreme nachos and can you put everything to the side. Then I asked for two fajita tacos and she asked me do you want everything to the side? I told her no when the food came out. She said ,can you check your bag? I checked everything except the last container. When I got home, the two containers was chips. No tacos. I go back, and they made it seem like I lied about the tacos. She spoke Spanish to the manager and I told her to speak English. They made it seem like I stole the non existent tacos. La Cantina has some of the BEST Mexican food that I have ever eaten. Let me start off by saying, they make some of the best salsa that I have ever eaten. I absolutely loved this man in the picture, he was the best server ever and was so nice to my family. I went around 1:30 today to this restaurant and had my family come of 14-16 people. I had a black shirt and black shorts so I did feel underdressed. (i did not take this picture of him on purpose me and my cousin were taking a picture and he happened to be in the backround). Me and my cousins were dancing on the right side of the restaurant and he came to watch and seemed happy. I had a chimichanga and it was the BEST one I had ever tried!!! Our fave, for years, but, no more, won't go back. We have had issues getting our basic order correct. Last time, we went around 615, the place was 1/3 full, no one on the patio. The 3-4 of the staff were standing around while every single table, on the patio, and many, inside, were completely untouched after patrons left. It was nasty. I went for the manager, we prefer outside with our 90 year old mother. Finally found someone to get the manager to clear A table. I think half the tables were still trashed when we finished. read more

I went to La Cantina because I happened to be in the area for work and players for a club soccer team I manage were in a play off game for their high school. La Cantina had a number of healthy options on their menu (grilled veggies) as sides to their entrees. I met a friend there who also was in town for the game. I decided to order the fajitas that come with grilled vegetables. We had a wait person who either was having a bad day or wasn't one of the strongest employees. She seemed overwhelmed and a little confused by some of our requests. When I asked to substitute the rice for grilled vegetables she initially put that on the order, but then came back and told us we couldn't substitute the rice although we could substitute the beans. If this in fact is the policy of La Cantina, it is a BAD policy. If you have various sides, then don't limit what can be substituted!!!! Anyway, I then substituted the beans for the vegetables and agreed to be served the rice. This was a waste because I had no intention of eating it. Very annoying and frustrating. However, the chicken and shrimp and vegetables on the plancha were very well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The other vegetables were also good. The chips and salsa were tasty as well. If there had not been been the issue with my order and the evident inability to substitute the rice, I would have given the restaurant 5 stars. read more

Love the refreshed atmosphere with new tables, chairs, booths, upgraded wall decor and sectioned party area. The easy to read menu is well put together. The improvements are evident to me but I'm sure most patrons overlook these cosmetic upgrades. It has been about 8 months since we ate here because the service & value was lacking but that has clearly been corrected. The food was well presented, excellent flavors and the portions were on target with the price point. The service was on point and the Manager visited our table as well. A little too heavy on the pickled jalapeños (& I love pickled jalapeños), but they overpowered the taste of both tacos. I got the black beans ( excellent) and Mexican rice ( no better or worse than the other 73 TexMex restaurants in the area) with my meal. My boyfriend and I ate here yesterday. It wasn't crowded, which was a plus. Our food also came in a reasonable time. I had the cheese enchiladas with queso, rice, and berry berry margarita. I really enjoyed all of mine and would definitely eat here again. He had shrimp cocktail, the spicy rita, and a shrimp taco, i believe. He wasn't enamored with the former two. OK, so I'm not from Texas, therefore; I was completely shocked to walk in and have them ask me "smoking or non-smoking?" I didn't realize there was anywhere in the United States that still had "smoking areas" of restaurants. because, as we all know, it's one big giant open space and the smoke goes everywhere! However, the non-smoking side was only a very faint smoke smell and no smoke in the air. (it was a Friday night that we visited.) The service was quick and super attentive! Our waitress and other helpers visited our table very frequently to make sure we had enough drinks, refills, chips, etc. The salsa was a blended sort and very tasty. The top shelf margarita was excellent and potent. We ordered our food, and it came out extremely quickly. The food was actually really great! The bill for two people with two entrées and two large margaritas was only $42 (before tip). The atmosphere was nice and open, with nice Mexican/Tex-Mex Decor. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, and I would definitely return when passing through the area again. read more

Well my experience was one of delivered food to a hotel. So having never been t o the restaurant in person, never having the in house experience it's kind of an incomplete review. But taking the food on strictly it's on merit, I wasn't very happy with my choices. The food I had was kind of bland and lacked imagination. The Chile relleno was like nothing I had ever seen before, basically it was a pile of chicken covered with a chili pepper splayed open and sauce poured on top. Chile Rellenos in my past had some thought time and preparation put into them, this dish I could of done way better even with my limited prep knowledge. As with any food dish it all revolves around the spice put into a dish, not only "spices"but also the flare with which the dish is put together. The other dish was the El Burrito, here again was a big disappointment! Take a tortilla wrap it around some chicken and then pour on what I can only deem to be "Mac&cheese" type cheese sauce and yet another very bland dish. Sauces are king where I come from and the cheese sauce was very lacking. The one thing I did order that was pretty good was the sautéed green beans the only problem with them was the cook was to lazy to cut off the steams! Worst Supreme Nachos ever! They were too soggy from the puddle of grease under them. Drain the meat!

This has to be the worst Mexican food I had in my entire life. I order what's called the cowboy special. What I got was cover in cheese, but not just any cheese. It's like Velvet cheese like what you make nachos with. As you can see in the picture it it covered in cheese, so much that u can even see or taste the enchiladas. Then they only gave me one small container of salsa with a decent sized bag of tortilla chips. And have the nerve to call the cheese "Chile con queso!" Oh but it gets worse. My total came to 12.98. I paid with cash and the hostess didn't have change in her register for A $20 BILL!!!!!!!!!!! She had to go in the back and didn't even give me the 2 pennies she owed me. Went there last night for the 2nd time. My boyfriend loves this place. He has been here several times. So I thought I would give it a second try. The 1st time i went i didn't care for my dish got cheese enchiladas, the cheese was not melted and the tortillas were more Crispy than soft. But on this 2nd visit i decided to get something deferent. I got chicken quesadillas. It was more like a taco, but the worse thing about it, the bottom part of the flour tortilla was so wet and soggy. I guess it was sitting on top of some very wet lettuce and tomatoes that was on the plate for a while before it was served to me. Sorry guys. I gave yall a second chance and you failed. But my other half loves this place and hasn't had any problems with all the dishes he gets. He gets something deferent every time. They do have good flour tortillas, and yummy sopapillas. I ordered the Shrimp Diablo, it was excellent. My husband ordered the Polo Loco, which he has at most Mexican restaurants we go to. He also thought his was excellent. The waiter recommended our drink Gringo Rita, which my husband had trouble sharing he liked it so much. Our waiter was outstanding. The order came out quickly and hot. Went 5/24/2015 Really bad restaurant. I don't understand how possibly can someone mess up a simple thing like nachos? Not many options for vegetarian like me either. Chips were smothered with cheese and refried beans, and not in a good way. Had to eat with a fork! That shows how bad they were. No jalapeños, no sour cream, no guacamole on top. La Cantina - Port Arthur. This is the LAST time we'll ever be back. Everything tonight was horrible. The service and the food. We saw our server twice? Once to take our order and another after we complained about the service. God bless their bus boy he did all the work and was fantastic. Took forever for us to finally see our server and order. Once we did someone else brought out the food. We ordered fajitas. We had one set of silverware no tortillas or plates to eat it with. We wait 5 minutes. I get up to find a server, end up getting the hostess to have our server bring out utensils and tortillas so we can eat our meal. She slapped them on the table like she was the one who was upset? We never got refills until after we complained. The meat was unseasoned and as tough as shoe leather. Also sorry if you eat their ice cream - there was a child standing at the machine licking all of the spigots. The staff at the host stand found it amusing. Happy flu season from La Cantina! read more
