Stopped in with a fellow referee after seven long games. Told him this was a long-time spot in Marshalltown and it was worth our time. They've added a few newer, more authentic items. One highlight is the al pastor items, such as the quesarreta. The meat was very tender and generously portioned. Rice and beans were standard issue. Vegan meat replacement is spot on! The food is flavorful and all is made in-house from scratch. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Fajita with pineapple is my fav. I was driving a car across country, and I had heard about how good the food was here at La Carreta. So I made it a point to stop in, and I was there for a late lunch. Those are you who follow me know that I judge, Mexican restaurants on the quality of the refried beans, and their enchilada sauce, and thirdly, but it isn't third, there's also. These guys knocked all three out of the park. Especially the enchiladas. Can't recommend them enough. Service was excellent! Seemed to really care about each customer. I had asked if margaritas made fresh (vs premade dispensers I thought I saw when walked in) and he said yes. But it came in a minute or less and tasted very watery, not like a margarita to me at all. There is some nice food on the menu. Definitely good enough we'll try again at some point. We've been in before a while back and just weren't super-impressed with the service and delays at the restaurant. Same thing happened again this time. We ordered an appetizer and then two entrees. The appetizer was pretty good with consume we really liked. My wife's dinner order came out, but then two other tables got their food. One of the tables had a server come back to them three times before my food finally arrived. No heads up from the staff. No apology. Later we had to sit for an uncomfortably long time wait for a box and for the check. The food was good, but not the best we've had within driving distance. They have enough interesting things on the menu though and I really like some of the management choices and community involvement. read more

Decided to stray away from our usual place in Marshalltown and quickly decided to stick to what we like.... The Good: The service was very friendly and accommodating. Our food came out fairly quickly as well. The Bad: It all tasted pretty blah and bland to me. Felt like it had no spices added... almost like boxed dinners. Very disappointing. As we came during the end of the opening hours the music was turned off on the patio were we wanted to enjoy our family meal - yet another turn off... Awesome mexican restraunt. We found this place while attending a graduation. We are from Illinois and are always looking to yelp to find the perfect place to eat. I ordered the Mega Monster Burrito, OMG this thing was huge. It was filled with steak, chicken and a lot of crispy veggies and queso cheese. Not only was there queso in it, it was covered in queso also. Best burrito ever!! My wife had the chicken sandwich that came with some really good onion rings. The waiter was very attentive and kept my diet coke filled, which made me very happy. We will definately be back if in the area. read more

Great little Mexican place with tasty food, a good reputation and friendly staff. I recently read an article online and almost couldn't believe what people were were saying! (Emphasis on almost couldn't believe.) I'm not that surprised of the hatefulness of people around the world these days. To any Christian and/ or customer who took offense with that sign, what would Jesus do? If your first impulses were to judge and take offense, you should go read your New Testament again. It is the responsibility of every Christian to spread God's love and the good news of what Jesus did. Never once in the Bible did Jesus say to go around judging people or to force your beliefs on them. Read about the great commission, what Jesus said about the woman who was almost stoned to death and his instructions to the apostles for when they were to evangelize. Spread gods love, let he who is without sin cast the first stone (as we are not the ones to determine what is a sin and what is not, that is between God and each person,) if someone does not accept the word of God (God's word, not anyone's political or social beliefs) shake the dust off your sandals and move on. God did not give Christians the authority to determine what's right and wrong for other people. Again, what would Jesus do? Jesus only ever preached God's love, healed the scared, weak and sinful people and spend his time with sinners! He also criticized the hypocritical Pharisees, and hypocrites are you who insight anything but God's unending love, understanding and forgiveness. Do not judge! If you choose that you must make a comment on someone's beliefs that are grievous or offensive to you for whatever reason, have an open ended discussion with them about it and take the chance of opening one another's mind to something not thought of before by sharing God's love. Don't send passive aggressive unsigned notes. Do not be offensive or force your beliefs on someone, and do not insult someone for believing something you do not believe in! Get the plank out of your own eye before you try to remove the spec you think you perceive in someone else's. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your strength, and love your neighbor as yourself! The latter being reflected in the fundamentals of what the sign encourages. Really appreciated the unique menu items, as well as their efforts to be inclusive to customers that have certain dietary restrictions. This might as well be a new restaurant from the old La Carreta. Don't let the location get on the way of eating there. La Carreta is quickly becoming one of the most innovative and trendy places to eat in town. I've seen them go from a El Portal clone, to carving their own identity with their adoption of new technology platforms for marketing, and by trying effective ways to advertise and it seems to be paying off. Also, their community involvement should be applauded. But a restaurant ultimately has to be judged by its food. I wasn't the biggest fan of the El Portal's approach to food because it was slight variations of the same ingredients. La Carreta on the other hand are trying new plates, and the last few times I have been there the ingredients were fresh. The Guacamole was freshly made and probably the best I've had in any restaurant in Iowa. Keep it up! Their street tacos are my favorite. Great selection of meats and salsas. Not saying they couldn't be improved by offering other more traditional salsa flavors like verde de tomatillo, and more traditional meats like lengua y tripa. Having said that, La carreta wins points by their presentation. During the summers you can experience eating tacos at night like the real deal in Mexico. It is one of the most unique eating experiences in town. Last time I was at La Carreta, I was blown away by their new menu offerings and I now want to go back and try them, especially their recently acclaimed burrito. Service is fantastic and consistent. If you ever have an issue with your food, I can guarantee they will fix it right away. Overall, this restaurant is showing how a restaurant should be run in this town. High quality food and service. My wife told me I had to try the street tacos. Happy that I did. I had two chicken and two brisket tacos. Oh was she right. These tacos were tasty and better than I expected. The chicken was moist and hot. The brisket was the best I have tasted. They were so juicy and tasted fabulous. They are now my favorite. The owner came out and asked how everything was. A nice touch.
