Had a very nice time at this La Carreta location. It was a Friday night and the other store in Madison Hts was crowded, so we came here. We were seated immediately and ordered Margaritas. The "vibe" here reminded me of places in Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas- very welcoming and absolutely no pressure. The waiters were friendly and accomodating. Everyone was having a great time. I ordered fish tacos and they were outstanding, as were the margaritas. The layout of the place, in a circle contributed to the atmosphere. The chips and salsa were good and the guacamole was tasty, My guest and I were very satisfied. Sshe had chicken tacos. Servings were large enough so we took home a taco each. Birra Tacos were actually amazing. I live in Texas and visit Mexico frequently. Finding good Birria is not easy North of the border. I was pleasantly surprised. Great location in a historic restaurant in Amherst. The wait staff were super friendly and the service was fast for a packed house on a Friday evening. Super Rico!! read more

Since my local Mexican restaurant has let me down lately, we ventured to a local classic today - La Carreta (the original one in Madison Heights, not the one located on business 29). We were traveling today with "Grandaddy" (who happens to travel with the aid of a rollator) for his 86th birthday. Handicap parking was very easy, and there was just a short walk to an easily accessible table/booth. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the music was not overwhelming. Lunch was a real joy and absolutely delicious! I had lunch steak burrito fajita and my husband had lunch beef chimichanga. The Pico de gallo was the best I have had in a very long time! "Granddaddy" had Talavera with ground beef. Our server, Armando, made sure that Granddaddy had a real birthday celebration and brought out a sombrero and Sopapillas for him. First of all it would be nice to be greeted by someone that understands English. I ordered a takeout Jimmy burrito. When I got home there was hardly any meat at all. mostly onions as filler rice and hardly any beans. The quality was not great but I was hungry and ate it. my wife had a similar burrito and we both have diarrhea this morning. Need to find a better Mexican restaurant. read more

Went with some friends for lunch, ordered on two separate bills my wife got her meal and my friend got his meal ,his wife's meal and my meal came 1/2 hour later, they finished their meals while we watched. Now it was their turn to watch lol. When we talked to the manager she made excuses for why this happened. One was the orders did not go in at the same time, after we told her my wife's and mine were on separate tickets, so why then was one meal from each ticket not served. Then she said two of the meals did not require to be cooked as long as the other two meals. If that's true use some damn coordination in preparing the meals . So every one can eat together . And as for the ticket orders not going in at the same time why would one person on each ticket not get a meal. They have lost 4 regular customers. La Carreta is on the list for us read more

Awful! Placed 5 separate orders over the phone. When I got home, 2 of the orders were incorrect. Called, it was explained it would be replaced when I called back in at a later date. Attempted to call to get items today and was told all would be replaced less what wasn't charged. I live 30 minutes away and no accommodation was made to support the fact to fix the negligence made by this establishment. It is obvious that Lacretta is getting too big for their own good and is not in the business to support the community to whom they are serving. Beware! They are not about the customer only to drain your pockets when they make the error! read more

Disappointed. Growing up in Southern California and being from a mexican family I know mexican food. I made the mistake of ordering the speedy Gonzales which is a taco, enchilada and refried beans. My waitress barley spoke English which is usually a really good sign your about to eat something amazing. Nope not what happened. I received an American taco with ground beef that was not seasoned at all. The enchilada was "ok" but something more from Taco Bell. I make tacos on a weekly basis and would have been cheaper to do it myself. The beans were good. The highlight and only good thing I can see going for this location is the atmosphere and they have horchata! I absolutely love horchata and most places on the east coast don't make it. If I were to visit Lynchburg again in the future I'd remember not to go here. read more

I wanted to give this place a 3 stars because the service is so good and the ambiance is really nice, but I decided I needed to stick to 2 so that I could warn you the the food here is not very good. I ordered the chimichangas and they were the worst I've ever had. The refried beans were also watery. The chimichanga was literally some salty dry steak rolled in a tortilla and deep fried. Now, I am from Southern California where we have some of the best Mexican food on the planet but I've been all over the country and understand that authentic Mexi is hard to come by. I recommend this place if you just want a cool place to sit and talk over a beer or Margherita while you munch on chips and salsa but if good Mexican food is your goal then "these are not the burritos you are looking for." (My cheesy Star Wars quote) Our server was very nice and fast though. That was the superstar highlight of the occasion along with fun conversational atmosphere. A nice place to stop for a quick bite of Mexican. They have an extensive menu with many different selections. One of the highlights was the white sauce they serve with their chips and salsa. They were so good that we ate about 3 baskets before our food even came. I got the Chilaquiles, which is a classic favorite of mine. It was definitely up to standard, although I wish they would have put more sauce on it instead of simply adding jalapeños. Their gorditas are also really great as well. The restaurant is in the shape of a circle, which is really cool, although you do feel like a corkscrew when you walk around the whole place just to get to the bathroom. The service was somewhat spotty, but all of the waiters were very nice and personable, which made up for it. read more

OK, so look. I grew up in a major eastern US city, lived out west for many years, and I'm married to someone from New Mexico. I know what I'm talking about here. For starters, what most Americans know as "Mexican food" is a modified version of northern Mexico cuisine. Real Mexican food doesn't have sour cream, yellow onions or yellow cheese. Americanized Mexican food, while not authentic, can be pretty darn tasty when prepared right. I went in to La Carreta for lunch the other day, and ordered a "Speedy Gonzalez", a taco, an enchilada and beans. I honestly have to say this is the worst, most god-awful "Mexican" food I've ever had. I can't believe there are people at this restaurant who actually are from Mexico serving this crap. They should be ashamed. The taco beef was leaden and greasy, with bizarre off flavors. Think rancid lard. The enchilada was sauced with something gray. I swear the salsa tasted like it has ketchup as a base, and was as mild as milk. When I asked for some Cholula to give it a little zing, they looked at me like I was from Mars. A Mexican restaurant with no Cholula sauce? Seriously, you're better off at Taco Bell. Skip this. read more

I like the ambience of La Carreta. The service is friendly... food is ok. I have yet to eat anything that is not too greasy or cheesy... but this is a go to when I'm in that kind of mood! :) I like their Queso Fundido and refried beans. Personally, I don't like my quesadilla to be overstuffed, but at least they don't skimp on the fillings... It's a great place to hang out with a group of friends and indulge in all that salty, gooey, greasy goodness. :) read more

I've been to pretty much every La Carreta that I know of and this is the best one by a long shot. The cooks are great, and the food is authentic. The atmosphere all together is just great, friendly staff and excellent service. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in search of real Mexican food! read more

I live in Madison Heights and go to the smoke free location across the street at least once every other week. This is definitely one of my favorite places to eat in town. I have to say that I love the fact that they have the smoke free location now because the other location used to be so annoying because of the way that the smoke came up to the non-smoking area. I have also noticed a difference in the food at the new smoke free restaurant. The salsa is a little different, but is still the same type of puree. I get the chilaquiles(sp?) just about every time that I go. These are tortilla chips with chicken, sauteed onions and peppers, tossed in a hot sauce and topped with a ton of melted cheese. It burns me up but I love it. The cheese dip is also a big hit here. It's rare that you see a table that doesn't get a bowl of this. Sometimes it can be a little watery, but the flavor is still great. read more

Tried this restaurant for the first time today. Though I am not a huge fan of Mexican food, I was impressed. First I started off with a jumbo margarita which was very good and had a great deal of alcohol in it, but not too much. Next I had a shrimp quesadilla which was loaded with shrimp and veggies. The refried beans are to die for. The restaurant itself is very cozy and a great place to hang out with friends. I will definitely be back for more. read more

We go to the smoke free location where the old pizza hut used to be.. We have never had to wait more than 10-15 mins for our food, and thats even when they are busy. Good food, cheap prices and very quick...can't beat that.. read more

I live in Los Angeles, so my review might be a bit prejudiced since we have Mexican joints on every corner. This place gets smokey since they allow patrons to smoke. The service is good. The food is ok for Mexican. The guac is a little off. I'm not sure what they're doing to it. I know that they are NOT putting diced tomatoes and onion powder in it, which is in all guacamole dips I've ever had. The "salsa" that comes with chips is more of a puree. It's hot and tasty so I can't complain there. Down the road in the old Pizza Hut building is the new, smoke free location. Service is ok. The food seemed a little better and fresher. I had a Quesadilla that had steak, shrimp, and chicken in it. Also inside were peppers, onions, beans, and a little cheese. In fact, they seemed a little light on the cheese, but I didn't mind since I'm trying to eat less of that. The frozen margaritas weren't quite frozen enough so they melted to liquid FAST. There's a flat screen on the wall that they were playing sports on. Um... that's not very Mexican.... however, half way through our dinner they did put on some Spanish music. They REALLY need to get some tapestries on the wall to help absorb noise. You have to raise your voice for the people at your table to be able to hear. Not crazy about the "pay the cashier on your way out" thing, but I think it does get you out the door faster. read more
