The ambience is always amazing! The food was OK. I've had pressure and more delicious juice from them before. So we may have caught them in a bad day. One thing that was very kind that they did was the allowed us to stay to watch a soccer game on their big screen TV. And we didn't have to order a whole lot. We had chicken Adobo and the Duo Poblano, which is chicken with both Mole Poblano and Pipián Verde (see photo) and all three were delicious. Also the children's menu items were enjoyed as well as dessert. And it the classic salad was delicious as well as safely prepared. Location is near the Zocalo in the historical colonial downtown area. Lovely, atmospheric restaurant! We had a really enjoyable dinner at La Casa del Mendrugo - and as a bonus, while we waited for our meal to be cooked, we visited the onsite museum which housed a collection of pre-Hispanic exhibits from Oaxaca! The food was really good and the atmosphere was terrific. The restaurant has an expensive feel with formally dressed waiters and white linens, but in actual fact the prices are very reasonable. Great tasting food in a great vibe and with a museum. We have the Mole Poblano and the chicken was extremely tender and mole was very smooth and not overpowering. Truly much more than a restaurant, La Casa del Mendrugo also sports a museum on the upper levels with local history exhibits. It adds a true archaeological vibe, along with the ancient remains on display underneath the floor by the entrance. The real story however is the food. The Picana steak is a perfect example of how beef can be perfectly cooked with just a grill and some salt and pepper. It was accompanied by the creamiest mashed potatoes I've ever had. I'm not normally a fan of mashed potatoes but this side has won me over. While the menu maybe pricey in the local currency, I found the meal to be a steal in USD. The location of the restaurant is great. Very quiet in a courtyard covered with a mobile roof. You can also choose to eat outside in the patio at the back of the restaurant. Waiters were very kind professional and polite. However, the food was a huge disappointment. I decided to come here for the veggie options they have. I ordered " arroz a la mexicana " and it was tasteless and watery. They put it in the main course menu and it was a size of an appetizer. I also ordered a glass of wine that was good but the size of a " flight ". I won't go back because I can def eat better and for cheaper in Puebla. As a native Pueblan, I was excited to try this restaurant because of all the attention it's been getting over the past couple of years. Unfortunately, my experience was very disappointing and unsatisfactory. The food is very bland and unremarkable. I had the paella valenciana and, in complete honesty, it tasted like boiled rice with shrimp, lacking the deep seafood flavors and socarrat that should be present in any paella. The service staff was very inattentive and unfriendly. For a restaurant of this price range, I was expecting table cloths and cloth napkins, both of which they lacked. I'm extremely satisfied with my visit to La Casa del Mendrugo. Not only the food was beyond perfect with a nice on point picaña steak and wine, but with the soothing live music and the modern fusion of old and new the place brings. There's even a museum where you can find out the history of the place that you can check out while your food it's ready. Pre Hispanic remains were found here and it's an exclusive display in the second floor, and also you can check the history of the building itself, one of the very first buildings of Puebla that lasted till today. Live music seem to range among different styles. When I made my body we had jazz from high caliber New York artists, tomorrow there's Spanish music and we plan to come again too. This place it's beyond eating, this it's an experience that can end your day in Puebla in a wonderful way. read more
