You can smell the shop before you've even opened the door, I can only imagine that the people working here have no sense of smell left whatsoever! They don't seem to mind though, I always find them to be helpful with a real passion for what they are selling. True cheese experts. You can ask to try anything on display (they are more than happy to let you do so) and then buy by weight. Try the Muscat jelly too, great for topping off the perfect cheese. They also offer an online delivery service if you're buying too much to carry home (hey cheese is heavy you know!) and a really useful 'Ask The Expert' page where you can e-mail them all things cheesy. This shop is a marriage of French and British cheeses and exists purely out of a love for making fine cheeses. Some of my favourites are the soft and creamy cheeses such as pom calva and ami du chamertin. There bleu des basques and Montgomery cheddar are great for salads. I've deducted one star from what would have been five based upon my first visit several years ago because the person serving us, though kind and attentive, seemed not to be sure of the names of visit the cheeses he had picked out for that day's cheese lunch, and because--where on our first we had been assured that the master cheese taster picked out only the five or six best cheeses most suited for serving that day, our server basically said he picked any five or six because "they're all good if they're in here". La Cave was a favourite place of mine to grab lunch when I lived in London. A little place of Euro-chic in an otherwise wet and cold London Town. You sit up at rickety tall tables while friendly shop assistants buzz around you chattering about the new cheeses and combinations in store that you HAVE to try! From the second you walk in you feel like you have been transported to Barcelona, Paris or Roma..not bad for a little cheese shop on the corner in Kensington! The menu is quite simple, in fact there's only a choice of two plates: meat or cheese. Take a friend so you can have both ;) A platter of freshly cut hams and salamis will be delivered to your table and the waitress will tell you all about where its from and what is what. Then comes the cheese! There's 8-10 different types from all over Europe that are laid out on the platter according to strength. It's serious business this cheese eating you know. The standout for me was the ridiculously luscious rich and creamy Brie with the optional flavoured honey. The perfect balance of salty-sweet. Make sure to browse the shelves and not to leave without a few bags of fresh goodies! Without fail I leave with bags and boxes piled high with soft cheese, meats and baguettes. I have not been in London long enough to properly sample the 'fromage' offering. (I mean no offence to most people, but the milk (industrial?) byproduct you consider as cheese does not quite qualify as Fromage....) They also have 4 or 5 tables where you can have lunch, and sample cheese. That did not catch my eye, but... Amid the decent selection of cheese in showcase I noticed a raclette machine! For those of you who never saw one, it's like a tanning lamp. The Swiss and French use it to melt raclette cheese. The melted cheese is served on top of potatoes with charcuterie on the side. I know it's not healthy, it's not light, but that's food porn.... After years abroad, deprived of anything looking like a decent Swiss or alpine restaurant, I just couldn't resist. 16 quids (with service) for 1 raclette and 1 wine glass (go with dry white wine). (The portion is reasonable but not huge. That's probably a good thing. If not eaten just at the bottom of a ski slope after a day of sports, a huge platter will transform your stomach in solid lead for a night. I didn't come here to shop. I came to drink and eat. And drink and eat I did. They do private parties after hours and so 15 of us sat down and enjoyed a medley of cheese and wine pairings and platters of cured meats. They take their work (or should I say art) and education quite seriously. The cheeses were exquisite as were the wines which kept flowing. The breads were quite good as well. Bottom line is I'd buy cheese, wine and meats here in a heartbeat. They have a diversity of origins and fabulous service. As a Happy Hour (after my husband finished a project he was working on for his MBA study abroad program), we met up here to share the British Cheese and Charcuterie Platter for about 10 pounds with bottle of cheap house red for about 19 pounds. For the amount of local smoked/dried meats, creamy trademark cheeses like Stilton and the assorted fresh-baked bread - one with olives and the other with apricot and nuts, we thought the platter was a steal. And it was nice to see more than a few options for 19-pound house wine bottles. The servers were very patient and helpful with us even though we came in with a half hour left until close. I'm a picky, fussy eater most of the time. Unless I set my mind to it, do not stray far from my comfort zone. My comfort zone extends beyond chocolate but as I'm hyper aware of taste, I shun anything I am unsure of. This place has almost cured me of that. I had never tried any of the cheeses and most were not ones I would have chosen for myself. In fact, I would have shunned them all, being not cheddar :-) I bravely entrusted my palette to the man in charge and the large glass of wine I had to wash everything down with and braved the cheese and BOY was I pleased that I did. Each cheese was wonderful and all but the Stilton I would have again in a heartbeat. I would never have ever tried a goats cheese ever and yet there I was ENJOYING IT! I highly recommend one of their matching evening and not just as a personal event but as a corporate event too. It would make an excellent evening for any reason. Wow. Phenomenal. Just a few steps outside South Kensington tube station you'll find this extraordinary cheese shop. The first thing you might notice is that it's modern: big clear windows, very open inside, clean and shiny and minimal decor, display cases along the wall that you walk up to rather than dividing you from the staff, tables and stools to sit at. Not necessarily what you'd imagine a traditional cheese shop would look like. They import and sell cheeses from several parts of Europe: France, the UK, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, mainly. I was there for a tasting event and managed to try several, all were amazing. Whether you favour gouda or blue or brie or something a little more exotic, all the cheeses here are flavourful and challenging. They aim to supply something different from the chains. My fave was the goat cheese with pepper that had been soaked in armagnac (I bought three leaf-wrapped portions). They do more than cheese too: bread (soon to be baked on site), some amazing sliced meats, and selected wines. A very nice place to go if you are in the area, I popped in for some cheese and wine whilst going to the Museums, the food and drink were amazing the service was great. Was given a good roundup of which wines go with which cheeses, it was very informative. The only issue I had was it was a hot day, so decided to sit outside, but right outside is a bus stop, so you get tourists pointing at your baked camembert and staring! Had the good fortune to attend a La Cave cheese and wine tasting evening recently and was truly a fine experience. A nice range of diverse cheeses were provided from potent goats cheeses, which were really quite nice (and that's from a non goats cheese liker normally) to a red wine washed delight. All cheeses were explained and accompanied with suitable wine, tasty bread and a selection of cured meats and other nibbles. We went in for a cheeky glass of wine after a museum visit. As much as I like the concept of having wine and cheese in the shop where they sell the cheese its not really working in this case. The first red wine I chose was not to my taste. Same with my friend and her white wine, but that's more down to us. I was hoping to get at least a few tasters of cheese with our wine to get business going. Nothing. Also the chairs were fairly uncomfortable and squeaky. To find a cheese place in the UK that offers a huge selection and a variety of products, is a real find. I love all cheeses and it's the one thing I'm ravenous for every time I stray to France which I do very frequently. If you haven't tried their honey truffle, you're definitely missing out. I developed a little obsession for it and actually gave jars away to friends for the holidays because I just had to share my joy of this delicious treat.
