UGH. Our last dinner in Buenos Aires, and what a disappointment! Was it the slow service, the indifferent server, or the BROKEN GLASS in our sausage? Hmm, maybe all of the above. Things started out well. It was busy when we arrived at around 9:30 pm, and the hostess told us it would be 20-25 minutes. It was more than that, but they offered us a glass of sparkling wine in the meantime, so we were fine with waiting. They had English menus but our server didn't speak English, so you should be prepared to order in Spanish here. We ordered what I thought was a lot of food: two empanadas, a chorizo, a salad, one portion of asado, fries, and a bottle of wine. But our server insisted that the asado was too small to share and we needed one each, so on his advice, we ordered two portions. In fact, one order of asado is not only more than enough for two, but it comes in two pieces! So we felt taken advantage of and misled into over-ordering. It wasn't the money, it's that we didn't like feeling cheated. The courses were poorly timed: the wine and empanadas came out quickly, but then we sat for over 30 minutes for a single sausage. Then everything else arrived all at once. Meanwhile, we saw other tables receiving their food both faster and in the correct order. We caught our server's eye several times, but he didn't seem to care that we were stranded without food. The worst part, though, as I may have mentioned, was when my boyfriend bit down on a SHARD OF BROKEN GLASS in the chorizo (see photo). Obviously that killed our appetite for the sausage! We showed it to the server and he shrugged it off, literally gave us a thumbs-up, and took the shard of glass away, never to be seen again. His indifference to food safety bothered us enough that I mentioned it to the hostess and manager afterward, but they didn't seem to care or understand why we were upset. They shrugged it off by saying they didn't make the sausage, and eventually offered to take it off the check when they saw we still weren't happy. But again, it wasn't about the few dollars that it cost, it was about us wanting them to care that there was BROKEN GLASS IN THE FOOD THEY WERE SERVING. I don't think they really understood that, even after our very awkward conversation. Imagine how horrified any restaurant in the U.S. would be if you showed them broken glass that came out of their food! The food itself (at least, the part that didn't have broken glass) was fine, not the greatest, but we had a hard time enjoying our meal after all that. It's true that this doesn't seem to be a place that caters to tourists, but we felt ignored and poorly served. Most of our parrilla meals have been so good that it's a shame we had to leave on such a sour note. I can't recommend this place to visitors who are here for a short time when there are so many other better dining experiences out there.

There is no steak like an Argentine steak.

While waiting the very minimal time for our table, we were treated to free Prosecco and mini empanadas--I actually managed to enjoy almost two glasses before we were seated! Indoor dining seems to be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis based on your reservation time. We were given an outdoor table, which offered a lovely atmosphere, but it does come with a significant caveat. While Palermo is undeniably one of the nicer neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, its popularity with tourists makes it a target for pickpockets and scammers. If you are dining outside, you need to remain vigilant. During our meal, we witnessed a specific scam happen twice: individuals selling socks would approach outdoor tables and casually lay a few pairs down right over people's belongings. When they picked their merchandise back up, they would subtly swipe whatever was underneath. Be extremely careful and absolutely do not leave your phone or wallet resting on the table. One table managed to get their phone back only after chasing the thief down for several blocks, while an older group nearby wasn't as lucky. To the restaurant's credit, the staff actively pushes these individuals away when they spot them bothering customers, and there was a police officer stationed near the entrance for the entirety of our meal. I never felt unsafe dining there or walking around the area, but falling victim to a scam can easily ruin an evening. If you want a more relaxed experience where you don't have to keep your guard up as much, I highly recommend aiming for an indoor table. Moving on to the meal itself, It absolutely lives up to the hype. We shared the ribeye, and it was fantastic. I might not go so far as to call it the absolute best steak in the world, having had my fair share of great cuts across NYC, LA, Japan, Korea, and Australia, but the quality was undeniable and it was cooked perfectly. The accompanying sauces were excellent, and I absolutely loved the grilled cheese and the house-grown grilled peppers. If you are seated outside, take a moment to step inside, perhaps to use the restroom, just to see the open kitchen and the magnificent wine cellar downstairs. It is incredible to witness the sheer care they put into cooking the meats. What truly sets Don Julio apart, however, is the staff. They are extremely friendly and welcoming, and the service is easily among the best of any restaurant I have visited in the world. To celebrate the birthday, they generously comped one of our appetizers and provided a beautiful dessert. It was an incredibly kind gesture they didn't have to do, and we deeply appreciated the caring hospitality. This is the exact type of restaurant I will always want to come back to whenever I am in Buenos Aires; the food is incredible, but the service is even better.

Did Don Julio's live up to the hype?…read more Can any restaurant ranked #10 in the world by World's Best Restaurants -- and crowned #1 steakhouse three consecutive years -- truly live up to its reputation? I'd say yes, and then some. A word of advice: sit inside. That's where the magic happens. The open-flame grills roaring indoors create an incredible ambiance -- intimate, lively, and unlike anything else. The outdoor seating is charming in its own right (cozy blankets draped over every chair), but the interior is the real experience. Service was exceptional. Before we even ordered, our waiter personally walked us through the kitchen to introduce us to the various cuts on display -- a thoughtful touch that made the whole meal feel like an event. We settled on the ribeye and one other cut, with the ribeye stealing the show: thick, juicy, and cooked to perfection over open flame. To top it all off, the meal came with complimentary champagne, chorizo, empanadas, and dessert -- generous extras that made an already outstanding dinner feel truly special.

The best part is that this is a locals restaurant, and it has such a great feel. The minute you walk inm you are welcomed by a friendly staff and led to a table, we chose upstairs and were quickly seated. Our waiter was friendly and jovial, and spoke great english. He recommended a Malbec, and then we ordered a bunch of food, which came quickly. As we dined, the placed filled up quickly, and looking around, there was not an empty table in the place- upstairs or down. The restaurnat has an Italian family feel, white table cloths and worn, but classy china. Plus the grill is amazing. Overall, this place is excellent, and a local friend who I dined with said he will be making this place one of his regular stops!

The portions here are massive. And that's coming from someone who can usually put away a pretty serious steak. Here, though It's a lot even for me. Was it good Absolutely. But a little heads-up if you're visiting: learn how Argentinians order their meat. If you ask for jugoso, it'll land somewhere between rare and medium rare. Al punto is closer to medium, sometimes even leaning toward medium well depending on the kitchen. And well done. Honestly... don't even think about it. Another tip: don't rush to order sides. Unless you're just getting a salad or you're sharing with more than two people, one plate is usually more than enough. Around here, they believe in feeding you properly and they definitely deliver.

The shrimp and salmon seemed fresh and actual meat. It didn't seem like canned shrimp or salmon. The sauce was composed and creamy. Turned out a couple of Food tours were arriving soon. Lucky we were ordering takeaway. Smaller spot with just about an equal amount of in/outdoor seating. We ordered a couple of the Guest Chori's-The Juan Pedro Caballero (pork) and the Carneceria (beef). Juan Pedro had tortilla chips and peppers and the pork chorizo sausage was saltier than the beef. We ordered a Chimichurri sauce on the side and enjoyed it. We liked the Pork more than the Beef-just was more flavorful. The Bread was thick, soft and held up to the Choripan and condiments well. Potato salad with al dente potatoes was tasty. They also have beer and cocktails so ordered a Gin and Tonic while we waited for our order. Friendly people behind the counter. I assured her it was not a problem and then paid with my credit card.
