Only a half-block from the social epicenter of Jardin Allende, it provides a nice view of the top of the parroquia from their rooftop terrace where we were seated (Photo 3). The restaurant definitely had a more refined ambiance than the previous four places. We could tell it was a popular spot among wealthy American expats because the ambient voices sounded more like Chicago than Mexico. No Spanish, just English. The cocktail was a tangy treat though, a Tamarind Margarita (Photo 8), and the Jicama Taco was a satisfying veggie ending to our evening (Photo 10). However, the staff didn't make us feel that way since they gave us the table with inarguably the best view of the city during the most photogenic time of the day, magic hour at sunset (Photo 3). How did we get so lucky since we made our reservation just the day before? And what better way to start than with a pair of MX$340 Carajillos, the Mexican version of espresso martinis (Photo 7). The use of Licor 43 lent a welcome sweet spiciness to the deep espresso and fit the moment perfectly. We were happy to receive a complimentary serving of warm Focaccia topped with a wedge of liver pate, olive oil, and chives (Photo 10). It was a nice surprise quickly devoured. Our first shared dish was the MX$365 Ensalada Luna, a hearty and enticing mix of greens, stracciatella cheese, speck ham, fresh peaches and figs, and quinoa in a citrus and vanilla vinaigrette (Photo 4). Our entree was the MX$406 Tacos de Lechon Rostizado, a trio of roasted suckling pig tacos with crispy skin cracklings, red onion, and fresh green salsa (Photo 5). The pork was fork tender. Nestled in a flour tortilla, the soft pulled meat stood in nice contrast to the crack of the skin. We went for a second drink, but this time a mocktail, the MX$195 Chilate, a refreshing alcohol-free blend of cacao, rice, cinnamon, and raw cane sugar in a coconut shell (Photo 6). While awaiting our dessert order, we were surprised by a complimentary Happy Anniversary dessert, a bit of a head-scratcher. We didn't say we were celebrating anything, but hey, we didn't complain. The sparkler was already lit and the staff was harmonizing. It was a chocolate ganache cake with blueberries atop puffed rice (Photo 8). That didn't stop us from enjoying the crispy-sweet MX$289 Churros with cinnamon ice cream and champurrado chocolate sauce (Photo 9), while entranced by the nighttime view (Photo 2). There is a smoked cocktail on the menu where they use wood chips to provide smoke into the cocktail which would be cool except they use a butane hand torch to ignite the wood chips. When our waiter came to our table with this contraption I said in Spanish that using a butane hand torch for that is dangerous. He laughed- then proceeded to ignite the torch and send fully ignited wood chips all over my wife. The wood chips burned through her favorite dress all the way to her skin (see the attached pic and imagine how having a burning wood chip would feel against your skin). The waiter then apologized but then acted as if nothing happened. I'm a professional chef and you use butane hand torches to sear or caramelize products that won't fly away- like a steak or a creme brule. The reason is because the force of the butane flame is enough to send smaller things like wood chips flying. This is why when you go to legitimate and safe speakeasies, they use a smoke gun which heats up the chips without sending them flying. To add insult to injury when we asked for the check the waiter came back with the full bill and asked for a 15% tip. This is after severely burning my wife and destroying her favorite dress. So if you want the adventure of having your dress ruined and extra trip to the farmacia for burn cream, Bekeb is the place to go.

Stroll into the Casa del Rector hotel and the concierge will radio up to check if there is room at the bar for you. Then walk through the hotel and take the elevator all the way up. We enjoyed our drinks and the lovely view. They have some semi-see-through sun screens/shields that cover half the bar for patrons who do not want the sun in their eyes; the staff raise these screens just before sunset. We enjoyed three drinks and an appetizer before leaving for dinner proper. The waitstaff were good. I actually want to give 4.5 stars because the calamari we had was laughably bad and the salad it came with was much better. Nonetheless the beautiful setting was one of the highlights of our trip so I will rank it as 5 - just don't get the calamari!!

Prices are a bit higher than most at 180 pesos per drink, but still very reasonable compared to US prices. The only thing that was a little strange was that their menu QR code took us to their Instagram page. Me being a total dinosaur did not have an IG account and couldn't see the menu, but luckily hubby did. There is a host's stand at the Hotel Casa del Rector entrance to make sure that there is seating to accommodate your party before allowing you to go up. Our hostess did not tell us how to actually get to the rooftop, so we just walked up a couple flights and found ourselves in a completely empty but very pretty courtyard. We found more stairs up across the courtyard, even though it looked like it led to hotel guest rooms and private balconies, then eventually ended up at the top where the pool and bar were. Totally took my breath away at the complete transformation from the busy cobblestone street to panoramic views of the city. Only then did I see the glass elevator that would've taken us easily up here.
