My fiancé and I went there for lunch today and immediately we were greeted by the most friendly staff and it was so welcoming. I got the spicy pepper steak and my fiancé got the pernil. Holy crap, when i say this is probably the best Cuban food that I have had EVER, I'm not kidding. The steak was amazing and the sauce was even more amazing. We had beef empanadas and they were amazing as well. The thing that stuck out to me is how friendly everyone was and how cozy the restaurant was. Not to mention, for the amount of food we got(let's just say we left stuffed), it didn't hurt my fiancé's wallet at all lol. We will definitely return to try more different things, we're hooked now! Great place! They have amazing choices. I came in with a couple of friends for lunch today. We ordered three different meals. They serve you in assembly line style. EVERYTHING was amazing! Not the biggest not the cleanest but the give you plenty of very tasty food. Went in at lunch and was third in line by the time I was done and I eat quickly there were at least 30 -40 people waiting outside the door. So get there early. Flan was a big too eggy for my taste. Space is tight, so try to get there a little before or after the usual busy lunch times. Staff is super friendly and helpful too. My first time here...can't believe I didn't know this little gem was there. Food delicious... all the staff was super friendly, professional and helpful. I got the yucca with peppers and onions, maduros and the juiciest, savory grilled chicken I've had in forever. Portions were generous. Price VERY reasonable. Clean, open, nice atmosphere. After a year in South America, I was craving some good Latin food, and Mi Cocina was the place to get it! The chicken was really moist but with a crispy skin, and the sauces are to die for! Try the garlic one (as long as you arent planning on kissing anyone!) and the chimichurri is banging. Balsamic dressing is a must for the salads, and the mashed potatoes are delish. Im not a meat eater, but I tried the guava bbq sauce from the ribs and it was one of the best things ever....almost made me want to be a carnivore! We just had a catered event from La Cocina yesterday. I have to admit that I was a difficult consumer. I had to change the delivery time--3 times. Still the food was ON TIME--it was HOT-- it was PLENTYFUL-- there was more than enough for the number of people we had...and students were happy to take some home with them because it was delicious!!! On top of all that it was reasonably priced and the staff was a pleasure to work with. It doesn't get better than this. My only regret...I was not in the line to get to take some home until it was all gone. THE BEST things: Empanadas, baked chicken, pepper steak.--that went SO FAST!!!! Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and delicious food make this an excellent spot for lunch. We had the grilled chicken, vegetables, plantains, pernil, and rice with pigeon peas. All the food was terrific and they provide a healthy portion size (enough for lunch and dinner) which was only $8 a plate during lunch. The restaurant was packed with patrons and everyone seem to be enjoying their meals with some raving about how much they loved the food. We look forward to going back to this terrific Cuban restaurant next time we are in Newark for lunch. read more

I only come here for the oxtail stew. It's still good but for some reason, tasted a little bit bland lately. The maduros are okay too. Unfortunately, I can't recommend any other food items. Have ordered the ribs, the rotisserie chicken, the pork (which looked like carnitas), but didn't like them. The staff are great though. read more

I've eaten here at least a half-dozen times. Both its food and service are inconsistent - some times better than others. Portion sizes change, too. In the beginning, they were larger, then they got smaller, and now it's in between. The first time I had their rotisserie chicken, it was much too dry, but it's improved since then. Their sweet plantains, however, have not. I like their beef empanadas; the chicken ones are not as good. Some other reviewers mention sauces - I wasn't offered any - not sure why. I've had their pernil ($6.95 plate) before, but was disappointed. Sometimes, their other options look suspiciously like Italian food - maybe it's because they're owned by Robert's? I realize that a new place needs some time to work out the kinks, so will continue to return with hopes that they'll continue to improve. read more
