My parents and I were visiting Nova Scotia for the first time and were told to get some authentic Acadian food, which we've never tried. We ordered a whole bunch of appetizers because we wanted to try everything and it was the perfect amount for the three of us. When ordering the Rabbie Pie, the waitress offered to have us taste a small portion for $2 since some people are bothered by the texture if they've never had it before. We're Japanese and we love gooey textures so we ordered it without trying and we thought it was great! It is more like a glob than a pie in terms of form. I loved both the flavor and the texture. If you want to try this, I recommend getting one and sharing; eating just the Rabbie Pie as my whole lunch probably would've been repetitive and overwhelming. If you're visiting and know absolutely nothing like we did, I highly recommend ordering a whole bunch and sharing. The waitress was friendly and the views on the outdoor patio are gorgeous. Also dog friendly on the patio!

Extremely fresh! I had the pan fried Haddock served with carrots and peas. Garden fresh. Real mashed potatoes. It was excellent and the view was fabulous.

I love this restaurant! We have been coming here over the past year and a half every time we the area because it is so consistently good (we've been visiting frequently as we were looking to move to the area). The seafood chowder is the best I've had, with large chunks of scallops and fish that are cooked perfectly. My boyfriend always gets the fish cakes - they are crispy and hearty. The bacon wrapped scallops are another fave. I often can't resist grabbing some chocolate or coconut pie, which are always served in ginormous slices. The atmosphere has a cozy home feel to it, with a great view of the bay.

    Bacon wrapped scallops. Delicious!

Best meal of my entire two weeks in the maritimes! We came at lunch and it wasn't too busy but otherwise it's wise to make a reservation. We heard staff talking about how they've had to turn people away! The restaurant is set up with a view overlooking the water. I love how it's got various rooms so you can different vantage points and views. Our meals: - Bacon wrapped scallops. Delicious and cooked perfectly. Can't go wrong with bacon wrapped anything. - Rappie pie. We have been curious to try this since we kept hearing about it. Our server warned us that 80% of people don't like it when they try it so they offer a $1.95 small taster. We tried it and both liked it. It has a very thick consistency, kind of a cross between a very thick tapioca or custard. It also reminded me a bit of congee. You have an option for clam or chicken. We had the clam taster but ordered the chicken as the clams tasted a bit too tough. - Haddock with hot creamed lobster. I was tempted by the lasagna but our server said it was yesterday's batch so wasn't freshly made, but still good. I decided on this dish since she said it was only of the more popular ones. So glad I did. The creamed lobster was delicious and paired so nicely with the Haddock. 5 stars all the way! - Coconut cream pie. Oh this pie. It was the best damn pie. If I'm ever on death row, I'm asking for this pie. It's a huge serving, but I implore you -- DO NOT SHARE IT. You can thank me later.

A nice Arcadian restaurant by the sea.

We came upon this restaurant while driving along highway 1 in the French/Acadian coast. There was a nice mix of locals and passers through. The staff was friendly and welcoming. The food was quite good. We particularly liked the fish chowder and the fish cakes. The fish/potato cakes reminded me of latkes and went well with the tangy chow-chow. A nice strawberry rhubarb pie rounded out our meal. This place is definitely worth a stop if you are in the area.

This place is a must for me every time I come to Nova Scotia. As a Bostonian, I have my share of seafood choices, I however, can't wait to visit this place. The people are so friendly and the view is phenomenal. I highly recommend the haddock with the cream lobster. And if you want a more Acadian experience try the Rappie Pie made from chicken and grated potatoes with the starch removed. Can't decide? They sometimes can give you appetizer dishes for a smaller taste of different plates. Nadine and Scott are very accommodating with any request I've ever had. Although they do not serve alcohol, you can bring your bottle of wine, and there is no corking fee. Enjoy the view!!!

By the time we found Lavena's I had had my fill of fried food. I was pleased to see the variety of options and fresh preparations available at Lavena's. We had the last of the rapure pie (an Acadian mix of potato and chicken), scallop and haddock chowder, and salted fish cake with green tomato chutney. Everything was delicious and NOT deep fried! The rapure pie was a new discovery for us and my husband found it hearty and comforting. The chowder was full of huge chunks of fish, potato and scallops with a nice light broth - green onions a simple but nice addition of flavour. The fish cake was good size, soft with a lot of fish. The lemon pie was light, lemony and not to sweet, a nice finish to the meal. I was hoping to come back for dinner after we explored Brier Island, but learned they close at 3pm (September), maybe they are open later during prime season. I'm hoping to return to the area and Lavena's one day!

We heard some good things so we made a reservation for an early supper. Decor is modern farmhouse. We arrived on time for our reservation and were seated promptly with menus. We were one of two tables in the room, the other seated a couple of minutes before us on the opposite side of the space. For the next 10 minutes a waitress went back and forth to this other table bringing drinks and taking orders. Another staffer was clearing tables near us and resetting them. Puzzled, one us went to the hosting station and a minute or so later a waitress appeared at the table explaining that someone did not check us in and that's why she did not come to our table. An apology (for the restaurant and/or herself) would have been appropriate but was not forthcoming. The food here runs from good to ok, but occasionally bad due to execution. We arrived hungry and ordered several appetizers. The winner of this course was the lobster bisque which flavorful and full of lobster pieces. The hot crab dip was cheesy and tasty but was served with bland commercial and perhaps stale tortilla chips;some nice toasts points might have been a better option. Our third diner ordered the shrimp cocktail hoping for a taste of the local Gulf of Maine shrimp, but that was not the case. For entrees, the most pleasing was the fish and chips, a generous piece of flaky, nicely fried haddock served with fries and Cole slaw. The smash burger was a double patty with all the trimmings but it lack seasoning and the usual crispness that is associated with the smash of the cold patty against the hot metal of the grill. The smoked salmon BLT was a fail. The bacon was cut to bits, the avocado schmear barely covered half the bun, the lettuce was part of the heart that was curly and made the sandwich fall apart and there was no tomato on the sandwich. For dessert , we shared the blueberry crisp with vanilla ice cream. While the blueberries were tasty as was the ice cream, there was no crisp here on the top except for a bit of oats that appeared to be added before the ice cream without being baked on. Generally, I can overlook some fails like the ones reported but there is no excuse for dirty dishes and unsafe conditions. Drinking water comes in a carafe that you serve yourself by pouring into short blue tinted tumblers. I poured for our table and two of the glasses were not used by us as there were lip prints of lipstick on them. We took two glasses from an adjacent table that was just set and again, one of them was also marked with a lipstick lip mark. Lastly, I asked for a table with a view, if possible. We were seated in a corner with a view of the trees for one of us and a view of the water. I noticed a door with an exit sign near us. It's a door you would not be able to exit as it was a clear 15ft drop to the ground. A wooden 2x4 was affixed to the frame across the door handle so you could not use it. But in case of fire, there was no way to safely escape through this door to no where. I might return under the right circumstances for the bisque and the fish, but I would walk out if I encountered the same safety issues again.
