So grateful Shanty Cafe was open at 6am, as we had to catch the CAT Ferry very early and the other coffee and breakfast shops didn't open until 7am. We ordered food ahead so we could pick it all up and head straight to the Ferry. The two ladies working the morning shift were super friendly and cheerful, and packed everything up very nicely (also provided plastic ware, napkins, jam, etc - they didn't forget a thing!) The only reason I gave them three stars was because honestly, the food was not spectacular. The french toast was quite bland, a bit over cooked and greasy. The tortilla verde was pretty good. The coffee smelled wonderful but was a touch weak. In any event, it's a lively neighborhood spot. They have a shop next door that sells novelty items and art. We were in a rush so unfortunately didn't get to check it out although they had some items on display in the coffee shop. read more

If you're looking for a home-cooked vibe, The Shanty is perfect! We stopped in for a late breakfast on our way out of town, and I would've gone back for lunch that day! The table next to us had lunch and I really wanted a club and onion rings, they looked awesome! Such great vibe - not fancy, but friendly and comfortable. The service was great and everyone was incredibly king. This is a very kid friendly space. High quality baby chair and the server brought over some books for our little one to enjoy. Unfortunately, the food was lacking. My wife got the chicken salad which was bland and aesthetically off putting. I got the mozzarella sticks a veggie burger. The burger had a play doh like texture and I have no idea what the mozzarella sticks were breaded in, but neither of finished out meals. read more

Bad first impression when your creamer curdles your coffee. Ordered 2 eggs scrambled, bacon, white toast and home fries. So my scrambled eggs were microwaved bacon was cold, toast were cold and the oil they used for the home fries was rancid. Staff extremely friendly, kind of restaurant I try to find. This place was awesome. Very basic presentation but the flavors of the food were fantastic. I had the kabir, apparently named after their first chef who was from India. Whole wheat bun recommended. Even the associated tomatoes were tasty. My husband got "just-the-fish" and a bowl of black bean soup. Dessert was a dulce de leche cheesecake. All of is was super delicious. You would not have noticed but apparently they employ people who are socially challenged. There is a crafts store abutting the restaurant that was closed at our visit. Son and I had lunch here today. Eggs and bacon (very large portion) for me. Prepared as requested, it was very good. He had the Trois Burger and was blown away. This is now in his top 3 burgers, which is an elite list (e.g. Annie's on the big island of Hawaii). He wanted another but we had an appointment. Great place, very friendly and casual. What a treat to find this wonderfully friendly restaurant whose chefs prepare delicious, diverse Cuban, Indian, Canadian foods. Hard to choose from the eclectic menu. Our choices were fantastic. In the morning grabbed yummy breakfast and cappuccinos on way to ferry. On top of the culinary excellence the restaurant provides jobs and support for people who have disabilities.
