I left Humboldt in 2019 but am planning to go back ... (asap away from Central Valley). Used La Dolce all the time. Some here have complained about a 'guy' and ... yes, he can be .. well ... Anyway, no matter. I miss going in .. esp. for the classics. So glad it's still there. Great little video store with a big selection of movies. Yes, I know renting videos is so 80's but this place has the classics and more than that selection on your cable network. So if you're in the mood for popcorn and those movies you can't find anywhere else, or don't have cable this is the place. Just be sure to return it on time. read more

Yay! I'm a fan. (Aww, someone beat me to the first review by 3 days.) The selection of independent and hard-to-find films is awesome. When my boyfriend asked for a dvd he wasn't able to find anywhere else, the cashier looked it up and said it was "in the garage." He left us in the store by ourselves and came back a few minutes later with the dvd. The store is small, and dvds that are not rented often are not sold or sent off to somewhere else. Rather, these rare dvds are stored in the garage and still made available for customers who want to rent them. There are also deals for renting multiple dvds. These deals are classified according to new releases and everything else. For instance, you can rent 3 non-new release dvds for 5 days for about $5. Best of all, if you ask for a movie that La Dolce doesn't have, the cashier will look up the movie on the Internet before s/he rings you up, and put it down on a list of movies to acquire in the future. It doesn't get better than that for an independent small-town video rental store. read more

I've been coming to La Dolce Video since it opened while I was in highschool. Before that I went to VX with my mom. I realize La Dolce is the only video store in town so this review won't do anything. Also this is more rant than review but whatever. Sadly I was informed yesterday that the owners no longer wanted my business due to my rental history. "Frequent outstanding late fees", is what I was told. I agree with that but, "Frequent outstanding late fees that were always paid no matter how much they were", would have been more accurate. I guess that doesn't matter and neither did my literal decades of patronage. So my review of La Dolce is this: great selection of movies, decent prices, so so employees ( the guy I've also seen working at the Broadway theater is the best one there and really great), and garbage owners. I've been kicked out and you could be next..... So I just need to know one thing. Who's coming with me? Who's coming with me? read more

Very interesting selection and the last video store in town. Very well organized by director, actor and country of origin.The selection is very interesting although admittedly not mainstream-based, although you may it may not find the latest Thor movie here you will find fascinating and compelling films that you would otherwise be oblivious to, definitely worth the trip! read more

This place is awesome! I mooch off my roommate's Netflix but Netflix NEVER has the good old movies I'm craving. This place has an amazing, off-beat selection and the people that work there are very helpful and didn't scoff like pretentious a-holes when i rented "The Last of the Mohicans"! read more

Best movie rental spot around. They have a lot of things I wouldn't expect, and tons I don't know. Plenty to discover. Also, they divide a lot of films by famous director or really interesting sub-genre. Employees know a lot about what you want. read more

A small video store in Arcata that banks on a selection of independent and foreign films as well as the latest blockbuster. Their picks are nice, nothing special if you are up on film, but generally pretty good. They don't have the biggest selection, but they have a lot of classics. Go here if you don't know exactly what you want to watch, but you want to watch something good. Much better than the competition, IMO. read more

hilariously unlikeable owner. i don't recommend renting from here unless you like getting lied to and treated with attitude thats befitting of a karen. rant ahead. full disclosure, i got caught up with my personal life and forgot about the two movies i had rented, this was my first time renting from here. on dec 9th, i got a call telling me they were 26 days late. at that point, i was quarantining for COVID-19 and up until the past few days i still was. today (dec 17) i got a call in which she told me that she didn't understand what was going on but that she was going to give me 24 hours to bring in the movies or that i would be charged to replace them. as soon as i heard the second voicemail, i checked my bank account quickly before calling her back to explain what was going on. i had intended to call and tell her that i was going to have someone bring them in for me and tell her i could pay the late fees, apologize and explain what happened. except i notice that she already has charged me $40. so i call, confused but not angry, and explain to her that i had just gotten my second voicemail from them and that she said i had 24 hours to return them but charged me within 10 minutes of calling me. argument ensued as she refused to answer my question and refused to admit that she even said that in the voicemail. instead, she keeps berating me as if i'm arguing about paying the fee. i keep telling her that i would pay whatever fee i owe, in fact i did already pay it, but i simply wanted to know why she left me a message that said i had 24 hours to return them, but charged my card immediately. after arguing with her and getting hung up on, finally she admits that she "shouldn't have said the 24-hour thing" and blames it on "a bunch of stuff going on." when i tell her that's unprofessional, she tells me i'm unprofessional for cussing at her. she also felt free to tell me that i am putting her out of business by keeping her copies of wondershowzen season 1 disc 1 and john water's cecil b. demented, blaming me for "35 days of missed possible rentals." all over two DVDs that gather dust on the shelf as they aren't really popular at all. when i tell her that my elderly father and 6 year old nephew had tested positive for COVID-19 in the past month, she tells me that i couldn't possibly have to quarantine for that long. she had nothing to say when i tell her it's because my dad got it first and then my nephew got it separately later. she told me that if i was lying around quarantining, i could have called her back. i said, "you called me one other time. this is the second time you have called and i called you back this time immediately." then she starts calling me a liar and saying that she has called me every week and left me a voicemail every time. after arguing, she finally admits "ok i've left you THREE messages." i've gotten TWO calls from them. two messages. then she scolds me for not answering my phone. i have literally never in my life been treated like that and i've never had to leave a bad review of a place, but this was so unreal and off putting. my advice is to just go to spotlight video in eureka. read more

Great selection of both well known and very obscure titles. It's hard to go into La Dolce without renting like 5 movies. La Dolce Video makes you appreciate video rental stores and the times when they were not overshadowed by the Internet. read more

We are so lucky to have a video store of this caliber in Arcata. La Dolce Video has by far the best and most interesting selection in the area. Lots of oddball hard to find movies and many current and more conventional titles too. The staff picks are great- I've seen some documentaries that I'd never even heard of but ended up loving by browsing their shelves. The staff is also really helpful about recommending films for whatever particular mood you happen to be in. Viva La Dolce Video! read more

One of my favorite places to while away time in Humboldt. La Dolce has the single best collection of film, from mainstream to indie, and really amazing recommendations. The staff actually knows and loves movies. I can come here and find a large number of movies I'd never heard of or are too hard to find elsewhere. A lot of what I get from La Dolce I could not find online--a saving grace for a brick and mortar shop nowadays. read more
