At 6:30pm on a Wednesday night, there aren't many restaurants open in Spain, as patrons traditionally flock to tapas bars well past 8pm. However, Restaurante La Escaloná is open from 12pm-12am, which was perfect for my family members, who, as Americans, were hungry much earlier than the usual Spanish dining hour! When we walked in at 6:30pm, we were the only diners in the rustically-decorated restaurant (complete with a bar and outdoor seating), but we chalked that up to it being fairly early, since the restaurant has a plethora of reviews on Google. However, it may be important to note that we remained the only ones there throughout the course of our meal (about an hour), though it was a weekday. We were given a bread basket with pre-packaged bread and bags of breadsticks (which seem to be popular in Spain). The bread was definitely a bit stale, but it was free, which not all bread services are in Europe. My mom ordered a glass of their Red Wine Sangria (€5,90) - it wasn't the best sangria we had in Spain (nor the best price), but it wasn't overly sweet, and it was refreshing on a hot, 108-degree Fahrenheit Sevilla day! I ordered using my high-school level Spanish, but the servers seemed to speak English as well, and there are English menus online! We started with the Grilled Small Squids With Eels and Prawns in Garlic Oil Sauce (€11,90) - a great portion for the price! The small squids were cooked well, with a nice bite, and the eels were unlike anything we'd had before: their thinness almost reminded me of noodles, with none of the greasiness that I associate with eel at sushi restaurants. However, the garlic oil sauce that the seafood was coated in was a bit too rich for me. Next, we ordered the Roasted Avocado with Marinated Red Tuna and Lumpa Roe (€11,90), which came with an avocado split in half, topped with a poke-like tuna mixture, sushi-style roe, and an aioli sauce that reminded me of Japanese mayo (rich, tangy, and just a bit sweet). The tuna wasn't the best quality, and the roe was nothing special, but for the price, I can't complain. Personally, I wasn't a fan of the texture of the roasted avocado, and I think the dish needed just a bit more acid to balance out the richness of the avocado and the sauce. We also got the Boletus and Mushroom Risotto with Parmesan Reggiano Slices (€10,90), which they've cited as "our star dish on the menu." This is a pretty traditional Italian risotto, and while it wasn't the best I've had in my life, the rice isn't overly mushy nor undercooked, and the risotto has a strong mushroom flavor. This is a very rich dish, so I couldn't have more than a couple of bites, but my brother, who loves creamy, luscious foods, was a huge fan! Lastly, we ended our meal with a dish off of the Chef's Recommendations Menu: the Pork Meat Grilled With Iberian Ham, Small Eggs, and Homemade Spicy Sauce (€12,90). We had some amazing pork during our trip in Spain, so this dish was just kind of average to us. The pork didn't taste like the best quality, and it was very "porky" in flavor. The small eggs were unique, but paired with the thick spicy sauce and greasy fries (which were crispy but overly oily), made the dish too rich for us. All in all, this is not a bad place at all for some tapas if you don't mind dishes that are a bit on the heavier side - there's nothing that I would deem "light" or "healthy" on the menu here. Service is quick and efficient, and the prices are totally reasonable - a great stop for "bar food" type tapas at an earlier hour! read more

We stopped by here twice during our visit to Seville and we were not disappointed. While Spain is known for Sangria, my favorite cocktail of our trip was the Cuban Mojito found here. The food was very good as well. We enjoyed croquetas and a delicious salad with goat cheese. Lastly, we always had excellent service and the prices are very good. We visited la Escaloná at the end of our Sevilla trip to have some last tapas lunch. The restaurant is located central at a small square and offers a nice and big terrace to sit outside. At the restaurant, the staff is very friendly and you get the typical olives, crackers, and bread as an appetizer. The tapas were excellent. Presented nicely, the meat and fish quality was perfect and the combinations presented just great. Especially all sauces and pestos seemed homemade and will stay in good memory. All in all the price is perfect for the amount and quality of food you get and we totally recommend anyone to pass by for some tapas. read more

We were looking for place that served fried eggs and bacon and found this gem along Calle Aguilas. The restaurant at the corner of the Plaza de Alfalfa has a nice welcoming ambience. It's bright, clean and spacious (2 levels)inside. We chose a table indoors instead of the outside because it's supposed to rain. We were greeted warmly and the friendly wait staff all spoke English. The breakfast dishes were of good portion, well prepared and presented. The ham and cheese sandwich was delicious. The bacon fried egg tomato sausage and beans was just what I wanted. Awful in every way. Rude, moronic, freshly lobotomised staff, who deliberately ignored us for some time, before we (literally) cornered them and got them to give us a menu and a table. They would not make eye contact, and only answered questions with single words. When they brought us the wrong food, they claimed it was what we had ordered, which was not true. Stupid, seemingly arbitrary policies about what one can and cannot order. For example, for breakfast, they would not let us order any toast. Toast is only available as part of one of the full breakfast offerings. They actually claimed there was "no toast", despite the fact that it was a feature of several of the items on the menu. When we asked why they would not bring us extra toast, we were told "this is breakfast", as if the idea of wanting extra toast with breakfast was the most absurd, offensive idea. One of our party was a vegetarian, and asked for beans on toast, which they said she could only have if she ordered the full breakfast, which included bacon and sausage. So she just had a small piece of tortilla, which, of course, was served in an incredibly rude, begrudging way. The food was of average quality at an above-average price. I have honestly never come across service this bad, or staff who looked less interested in doing their jobs. I would rather forage for leftover food in rubbish bins than go to this place again. read more

First place in Seville I have to give 5 stars and can't wait to eat at again. Service was superb. They were attentive and came to get us when there was an outdoor table even though we were making an inside table work. Grilled vegetables with goat cheese and Moroccan lamb were perfect. Also got chocolate cake (more of a pie type and not really a rich chocolate but it was good), tiramusu was OK but flan/cheesecake was amazing. Vermut, cava and red wine selection was wonderful. read more
